Do you use a Pocket sheath/slip?

Back in the traditional game after long absense. Looking at buying a knife and the site offers pocket slips. Part of me thinks it's a great idea to protect it in pocket. Other part says if it's in my coin pocket, there is no need to protect and will add bulk. I can always grab a slip and only use it when coin/watch pocket is not an option.

Do you use a pocket slip? Why?

I have never used a pocketclip on a traditional pocket knife. I regularely remove the pocketclips from my smaler non traditional knives as well. If I am worried about scratches, i use a pocket sheath/slip. Usually I dont bother. I like some wear on my knives.

I only use one because I always have coins, keys, and other random objects in the same pocket with my knife. I just use the KSF slip.

I've got a few knives that I've made slips for, and I really just use them to keep the knives free and clear of lint...ect.

I am asking about pocket sheaths or pocket slips, not clips. Thanks for opinions so far!

I do. Just to keep the keys and coins from scratching the knife. Right front pocket, not coin pocket. Just don't tell T. Bose.

Hate carrying my knife with keys or coins, so generally I don't use a knife slip.

However, many French knives, Laguioles etc, come with a soft nappa type sheath. These are very nice as they're not bulky and if you drop a knife they certainly do help protect it.

I'd say get a slip if there's a knife you particularly like.

Thanks, Will

Never have, I doubt I ever will. A few superficial scratches and dings don't hurt things any, I've researched things myself by dropping stag, bone, wood, and even ivory covered knives into my pockets with keys and coins. You can't help but focus on the first few marks, but after a while you hardly notice them.

Most of the times I do use an old ksf leather sheath for mechanical protection.
Though I'm not afraid of scratches, I've had bad experiences with crumbles, fusels,
or, worst case, grains of sand sneaking in the joints.

If I am carrying in the coin pocket, no. If I am deep pocket carrying then I use a slip to keep the knife vertical (I hate it when it turns sideways) and to distribute the weight a little in my pocket. Additionally, it helps to make sure the knife doesn't fall out my pocket in dress pants.

Like your watch pocket, my pocket serves as a slip because I don't keep anything else in there with the knife. I don't use my knives all that much really but if I carry the same knife long enough it will get scratches from using it anyway.

Typically, I use the coin pocket in my jeans. I also use a GEC sheath for times when the knife doesn't fit well in my coin pocket. I have been considering getting a pocket slip with a clip on it, but the knife I'm looking at this option for is a BRK Essential.

I usually use one like Nifebrite - not particularly for scratches, but more to keep the knife action clean from grit and lint. It might be a bit finicky, but I feel pocket fluff can carry moisture and salt with it too.

I use some nice custom slips I had made and a GEC slip for LFP carry. Of course for watch pocket carry, no slip. It's also more innocuous if I need to remove contents of my pockets and rearrange them at a cafe or something. Also if I'm using a pocketknife for eating in public, where the provided butterknife travesty is inadequate - I can just slide it back into the slip on the table when not in my hand.

I usually just drop my EDC knives in my pocket but if I'm carrying something really nice like one of my stag handle Glennbad modded knives I drop it in a GEC or KSF slip.

I carry at least one Stag 75% of the time . I will always carry Stag in a Slip unless it Does Not Have brass liners and pins.
I do that to keep moisture as far away as possible from the brass and forming Verdigris and ruining the appearance of the Stag. . I will also use a Slip with a Plain White Bone .
Right now my Stag 73 is in my LFP in a Slip and my Old Red 77 Barlow is in my RFP with no slip .
The Slips that I use are from CK . Like them a lot .

I EDC a GEC Viper. I carry it in a quality leather slip because it goes in the left front pocket, along with my pocket watch. The slip protects the knife as well as the watch.

I recently made this slip sheath with a pocket clip. Best of both worlds, IMHO.

Main reason I went this route is I wanted to start carrying this vintage Kershaw 1993-2 Gentleman's Knife. I love this knife but it's just too big to leave flopping around in a pocket. I wanted it accessible and the slip/clip sheath was the solution. Loving it so far!

The sheath usually rides in my back pocket. I sized it to carry other knives in my "collection" also, and that often includes a GEC Bull Buster.

I use a leather pocket slip with clipless/slipjoint/traditional knives. Not worried about scratches. I only carry knives that I intend to scratch. I often wear pants with large pockets and the width of the slip keeps the knife in a vertical orientation. If I just drop it in it often ends up sideways and I have caught myself subconsciously fixing it. Draws attention and feels uncomfortable.

I've tried using a slip a few times but mostly my knife just goes into my left front pocket with my keys. If I am carrying one that I'm worried about scratching I'll carry in my watchpocket.
