Do your Expensive EDC’s stay at home? Or do you carry less expensive EDC’s?

I use all my EDC knives for work. My EDC knives tend to be budget, or mid range though. Im recently retired, and not ready to spend a fortune on a knife yet. Still getting used to a fixed income.
Congratulations on crossing the Finish Line! 👍
You worked hard for too many years; so don't deny yourself the rewards of that labor...

I don't think I've bought anything over $500 before (microtech OTF) but it saw solid use for years before I blet it go. Now most of my EDC rotation knives are $200-$300 and they all get used. The only one I got that doesn't see a lot of use is my M4 native chief because I'm a little concerned about breaking off the tip. Might have to let it go.

I do have some expensive knives that stay home. More so because I bought them and just never carried them and moved on to the next knife so fast…. Like a ZT 0560bw, 0452cf, 0452ti, 0350cf, and a 0801. Same goes with a few really nice Buck 110s that I like I just never carry. I probably should move them along to someone else but I’m honestly not motivated to do it……lol

Hell yeah they get carried and used. That first scratch hurts but then you start actually using them as tools them and stop treating them like expensive display pieces. My carry knife for the 14 ish months is a ZT. Payed around $350 buck for that thing and expect it to carry its weight. Before that was a BM 940 and I beat that knife like it ran off with my mother’s purse. Ended up selling it to a good buddy after he was going on about his Walmart variety folder. I miss that knife.

So yeah I say use them.

Unfortunately I'm at that stage where I don't want anything over $300 to leave the house... I either carry my Manix 2 or a Civivi outside. And recently I've been purchasing in search of a "nice" knife that I would EDC. But I keep getting ones like these two that I can't imagine bringing outside 😭

This thread is interesting because it shows how varied ranges of value are. A lot of people on here give their Sebenzas a lot of love and only keep their $1000+ customs at home. For me, I don't wanna mess up a $300 knife. I'm sure there are people out there whose most expensive knife was $200 and they cherish it and that's great. It's just that there are so many really good budget options these days, that I always keep one of those on me to cut with and maybe a more expensive knife too just to feel cool.

I’m all about character. Something needs cut, it’s getting cut with whatever I have in my pocket. If I’m having difficulty putting that first scuff on something or breaking one in, I carry only that knife for a while. No falling back on some secondary. All those marks will eventually tell a story that’s important to you.

You get more attached to the ones you use. You’ll make memories - “I cut that rope to hang my daughter’s piñata on her 5th birthday with this one”, or “I used this one to cut that big mess of tangled fishing line off my Dad’s rod the last time we went fishing”, stuff like that.

It’s much better if those memories aren’t made with or attached to a shit knife. Trust me.

My most expensive knives are Sebenzas... they get used. Why not work a knife whose name means "work?"

Chiappa Rhino 30ds. 3" barrel .357 magnum. Fabulous gun.
Sweet. Off topic, but my Grandpa owns a GP-100 with a six inch barrel. 38 recoil is nearly negligible and 357 ain’t too bad either. Wheelguns are a lot of fun to shoot. Smaller guns are more difficult for me to control though.

Back on topic, I don’t really own any “expensive” knives myself (nothing north of $200). Be it a Spyderco, Cold Steel, or Mora for that day, if I come across a task that needs a knife, the knife of the day is getting used without hesitation. But that’s just my opinion and philosophy of use. All of my knives are tools, not jewels. There’s nothing inherently wrong with safe queens either. Your stuff, your choice what to do with it as long as you aren’t hurting anyone.

The thing about the Rhino is there is nearly zero muzzle rise even with .357 defensive loads. I never imagined .357 out of a 3" barrel would be fun. My only other experience with that round is my buddy's LCR. My big meat hooks had my pinky and most of my ring finger grabbing air. My buddy is 10" shorter than me though. 8 months out of the year I can carry a full size 4" semi auto no prob.

Back to the topic.

One of the reasons I like more expensive, custom or semi custom knives is I feel they have better heat treatment. The M390 in my Cheburkov Strizh and Seamus Nor'Easter outperform any other knife I have in that steel or it's derivatives.

I split my collection and customs up between my home in the Philippines and Guam because I travel back and forth several times a year.. My customs here on guam are a clone of a randall 14 as well as a Bob Kasper/Polkowski Bulldog that was tweaked to my specifics and was one of my edc during my time in law enforcement.. My Randall 14 was my other edc during this time

With that said, If I know I have a day of laying on concrete under a car or really rough use I tend to go with the Endura or Hinderer that I use as beaters.
The others can handle it but why grind my Umnum between my 265lbs and the concrete if it doesn't have to.
I do miss having an XM-18 around for those “ a knife isn’t the right tool but it’s what’s in my hand” jobs.

Lord knows I tried but I never broke one. I actually dug / chipped / chopped a brick out of the frozen ground once, the whole time thinking “ I’m gonna need a new knife” but nope nothing.

My 1st son-in-law still carries and beats on it daily as a pivot mechanic.
