Do your Expensive EDC’s stay at home? Or do you carry less expensive EDC’s?

ummm all my knives would be considered "inexpensive" (or worse) by the good folks of BF ... my most "expensive" knife is ths $100 Buck 110 SK Blades SFO.

'THE GENTLEMAN' (I admit I ain't one) CPM154 drop point blade, Germen Silver bolsters and liners, black G10 covers.

It gets carried every now and again, tho I am more apt to carry a standard 110, since this one cannot be replaced.
SK Blades was forced out of business a few years ago when Buck quit doing SFO's, so no second run possible.
I have not seen one for sale ... and since my stroke and being installed into Assisted Living, I don't have the money for one at the original price anymore, forget the added premium that would be required now.

Heck! A standard 110 is at or over my available after rent monthly budget now.

If a knife stays home it can't be an EDC. As I understand EDC to mean every day carry. So no I don't have any expensive EDC's that stay at home. I have a couple nice knives that I only carry on special occasions, but they aren't EDC knives.

Most of my knives could be EDC knives, except they haven't been able to unseat the current EDC knives for pocket time. And then I have some knives just because I like them, but have no need for a knife that does what they are made to do.

O.B.

I do miss having an XM-18 around for those “ a knife isn’t the right tool but it’s what’s in my hand” jobs.

Lord knows I tried but I never broke one. I actually dug / chipped / chopped a brick out of the frozen ground once, the whole time thinking “ I’m gonna need a new knife” but nope nothing.

My 1st son-in-law still carries and beats on it daily as a pivot mechanic.
I will admit, when I have to do something like cut apart a car, I grab the XM-18.
It has seen some stuff. Not real comfortable to carry, but good lord it takes to extreme work like a champ.

I've admitted multiple times that I could actually survive my day to day without carrying a knife...and, accordingly, I can easily go days to weeks at a time without using one. I still carry one because I have since I was 8. I carry more than one because I like different kinds of knives.
My expensive modern folders don't come close to what some people on this site own; but, if I like a knife, I don't mind carrying it. (The other part of that is the acknowledgement that - when I need a knife - I'm generally more likely to reach for the traditional or fixed blade I'm carrying.)

For me, it is largely a matter of replaceability. Being retired, EDC for me is largely a matter of small game hunting, fishing and chores around the house, yard or my trailer in northern Wisconsin. These three knives are regularly carried but the Benchmade Minigrip will often get the nod if I have serious concerns about losing the knife. I have a phobia about dropping anything overboard while fishing. While not an especially cheap knife, it is readily replaceable. By contrast, the GEC 73 drop point in Cocobolo is one of 75 made in 2015. I could not tell you when I last saw one on Ebay or AAPK. A quick search of the BF Exchange shows one within the last five years. The Jim Dunlap trapper is probably replaceable but almost certainly not at the price I paid.

I'm a little different I reckon. I go by the knife itself and not the price tag. I never hesitate to carry and use my CRK's, Hinderer's, rare GEC's, etc.. I have a couple Case trappers that I carry, but don't see a lot of use. One is a brown bone version that is perfect in every way (like GEC fit and finish) and it even came with a really sharp, even edge...surprisingly. And another really good one is a bare head rosewood model. I sent that back to Case for blade play and centering issues...when I got it back I was blown away by how nice of a job they did (it was re-sharpened and buffed and all that good stuff). I think they each cost around $45 each when I got em, and I'm sure they can be replaced, but they're just sublime examples of craftmanship and they're more to make me happy than cut stuff at this point. I always have two on me anyway, so they're fine just being along for the ride...

I carry two knives these days.

Almost always it’s a Sebenza (general use) and SAK (when I need to lend a knife, also in case I need to do something that could damage the blade).

When at work (rarely, then its an office job), I carry the Mnandi in lieu of the Senenza.

I did just score a Grimsmo Rask, but it’s an early purchase birthday present and I’m keeping it in the safe until the actual birthday comes. I was on the list forever and couldn’t risk passing. I suspect I’ll carry it when I’m not planning on doing knife work (really most of the time, certainly when going out to eat, etc.). I can’t see letting it sit in a safe, but also can’t imagine abusing it.

Well, if it’s “Truth or Dare” time on BF, then I have to admit that: If I want to carry one of my (relatively few) expensive knives then I will buy a second one so as not to harm the original…..most of the time on the secondary market. And I’ll sell-off something else in order to afford the back-up purchase. I guess it’s the old “two is one and one is none” concept.
Feeling somewhat relieved now having publicly admitted to it! 😎

I'm similar 😂, I have an extra SHF watch handle landing today so I can carry it without scratching up my pristine one!

Every knife I buy gets used but TBH not all get used equally. My expensive knives with the super steels & high quality materials are limited to seriously "light use"; ie: opening mail, chips, etc. My sub $100 folders are the only ones that come to work with me on the roof, because the roof is seriously hard on tools. The only high-dollar knife I would consider bringing up on the roof with me would be a Busse, because they hold their value even after seeing some serious use. I'd really like to get a sub four inch blade Busse for my work knife, with a custom sheath.
I realize I'm missing out on using my high quality knives to their extent but it is what it is. I guess I always have it in my head "What if I need to sell this someday?"
