Do your Expensive EDC’s stay at home? Or do you carry less expensive EDC’s?

If I don't feel comfortable carrying it, then I shouldn't have bought it. I'm getting rid of some grail folders because of this.

Hey all knifer’s! Bike Doc here. I am bidding on a Real Steel Phasma this very second. Any thoughts?
It's a good knife ground very thin so it cuts well. There is a titanium m390 one and a d2 version. The action was a little lacking online but still a good knife.

Does it feel slippery when wet because of the metal handle?

I’ve had it a little wet and didn’t notice any slippage. I just ran it under the kitchen sink and got it all wet and didn’t notice anything wrong. It’s worth a try since you can always send it back for free to Amazon if don’t like. I love them, ordered my 3rd one today to leave in truck. Got it for $32.

The only reason I won't carry a knife is if I don't like it and intend to sell it. If It's a keeper I'll use it with care but without caring for the dings and dents that eventually accumulate from dropping and bumping things. :)

I don’t really own expensive knives. I think my most expensive knife was just recently acquired at retail price of $195. I’ve carried and used it daily since it arrived. I have knives that don’t get used but not because of price. They either have sentimental value, I don’t like them and will eventually gift or sell them, or they are stashed for a backup or a just in case situation.

To be honest, most of my knives are right around $50 so I have no problem using them. My more expensive ones tend to be safe queens as they were usually purchased during a phase; big folders, chunky folders, big chunky folders...

I’m all about character. Something needs cut, it’s getting cut with whatever I have in my pocket. If I’m having difficulty putting that first scuff on something or breaking one in, I carry only that knife for a while. No falling back on some secondary. All those marks will eventually tell a story that’s important to you.

You get more attached to the ones you use. You’ll make memories - “I cut that rope to hang my daughter’s piñata on her 5th birthday with this one”, or “I used this one to cut that big mess of tangled fishing line off my Dad’s rod the last time we went fishing”, stuff like that.

It’s much better if those memories aren’t made with or attached to a shit knife. Trust me.
I feel the exact same way. I'll just add, when my time comes to bite the dust, my sons and surviving family will get my knives. Just as I got my grandpa's old case. It's well used and it tells a story. It means more to me knowing he used and carried that knife. I want my sons to hold my knives and see the marks and wear and have it remind them I actually held that knife. I used it and carried it.

The character gives it more value in my opinion in more than one way. I simply don't care about resale, I buy them to use.

I love carrying knives I love. So price is not an issue for EDC. I do treat them with care, and often tailor my carry to what I expect to do that day. I never let anyone borrow them. That is a recipe for tears.

I have some knives that are not EDC appropriate in my eyes as well as a few that I see as knife art that don’t get carried much if at all. But that’s ok as I have many knives (too many) to choose from.

Bottom line for me is, life is too short to carry knives you don’t love, and a knife stuck in the safe can’t be loved.

It's funny because I have a few knives in the $300-600 range but I'm more likely to use one of them than a $150 Kizer Genie Titanium that I have. Not because of function or fondness, but because my Kizer is discontinued and it was harder to get than the more expensive knives I own. So you could say I personally value it more,

Yeah, I can definitely relate to that. I have several less expensive knives that I’ve put away just for sentimental reasons all while using the more expensive stuff on a daily basis. Personal value is a good way to state that, I’m probably going to steal that phrase from you

Hi all. Bike Doc here.
I was wondering who leaves their expensive knives home and carry alternatives? I am impressed with some $60 well made knives I’m not afraid to use.
Years ago I heard about a guy who walked into a bar and said that he wanted to buy the bottle of 200-year-old scotch that they kept on display with the price of $32,000.
He opened it and shared it with other people in the bar, explaining that he thought this stuff was meant to be enjoyed.
I figure that if someone went to the effort to use good steel with good design and put a good edge on it, then it should be cutting something.

I like to mix it up. I have a bunch that are favorites and some are regular factory knives, some are a little bit more high end factory and a couple of custom made models.
Victorinox, Spyderco, ZT, Spartan, Hinderer, and R.J. Martin. And most of the time I will have 2 or 3 of them on me.

This is about as high-zoot as my knives get. I use it at work every day, otherwise, I wouldn't get my money's worth, just keeping it on display.

It’s an interesting question.

Reading through the replies the first thing that strikes me is “expensive” is different for everyone. While over $50 is expensive for one, over $5k might be expensive for another. For me I carry/use 99% of my knives regardless of cost. When I thought about this question I realized I carry my “expensive” knives far more often that I carry what I would term my “value” knives.

My carry today…
