Does anyone else wish superheroes would go away?

My only problem with the Marvel movies is just how many easter eggs they slip into their movies for other movies. Call backs, call forwards, etc. I used to keep track of them as they story unfolded, but it just got to be so tiring. I appreciate it all from the perspective of a writer, but as a viewer I'd just like to be entertained.

I agree. That’s the main reason I lost interest in the Marvel movies, and superhero movies in general.

I think my favorite of the Marvel movies was The Incredible Hulk...the one where he fights The Abomination. The Hulk was also my favorite comic book superhero back in the day. But I didn’t like the first Hulk movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a fun one for me, because it just seems so disconnected from the others, you don't have to see them to understand the story in it.

But even if superhero movies peter out, it still doesn't change the fact Hollywood doesn't know anything about making good movies anymore. They care more about visual appeal and preaching political narratives over coherent plots and likeable characters. Mortal Engines, anyone? Terminator Dark Fate? Pacific Rim Uprising? The Predator? Alien Covenant? The Last Jedi?

Hollywood treats us like crap, produces crap, takes our money, and expects us to be grateful. That's never going to change, because Hollywood simply doesn't care.

I think China and globalization is part of the problem. Movies now are made with world audiences in mind. Nuanced dialogue and complex stories don't sell worldwide because of the language or cultural barrier. As a result big dumb loud movies are easier understood, so are popular worldwide. Obvious good guys and bad guys in costumes are easier to understand.

I haven’t seen the Guardians of the Galaxy films, but I do agree with your assessment of Hollywood. They don’t care about their product, so I don’t care. There aren’t even any good original soundtracks anymore; the only good ones are rehashed from old movies, or use popular songs from the 1960s and 1970s. I forgot to mention that I enjoyed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but the part where Tarantino trashed Bruce Lee‘s character P’d me off a bit. But that also had no original soundtrack, like all of his movies. Any recent movies’ original soundtracks are boringly generic, unmemorable junk.

Hollywood has run out of ideas. So they rehash everything. The biggest sin is when they attempt to remake hit movies from other countries. Those movies do NOT need to be Hollywoodized and ruined.

I hate the reboots of TV shows into movies: Chips, Charlie's Angels, Starsky & Hutch, Dragnet, The A Team, 21 Jump Street...the list goes on. About the only one that was any good was the Brady Bunch Movie.

I've never been a fan of comic books so naturally I'm not into the movies, TV shows, etc. I don't expect everyone to have my same interests but at what point do they move on to something else? How can people not be tired of this genre by now? I have to believe some felt this way when westerns were super popular years ago. I'm hoping superheroes burn out soon but I'm not holding my breath.
Variety is the spice of life. I like westerns too. When I was young I got hooked on fantasy novels and still enjoy a good one to this day. The only movie type that I generally will not watch are the devil type horror movies. They trouble me.

That is true but when half of movies made are about superheroes, where is the variety?

Do any of you prefer old movies to what is made today? Most of what I watch is 20+ years or older. I especially like film noir from the 40s & 50s. My idea of a good movie is Sunset Boulevard, Key Largo, Laura, The 7th Victim. I like some newer movies like Wes Anderson's stuff. I think Rushmore and The Royal Tennenbaums are great movies. I also like neo-noir like Devil in a Blue Dress and The Usual Suspects. I still like some silly movies I saw when I was in high school like Caddyshack and Used Cars, but a lot of what I thought was funny in the 70s and 80s has aged poorly and doesn't hold up.

Definitely!!!

Those old stars like Bogart, Mitchum, Douglas, were damm good actors that didn't have the special effects department and computer generated effects to lean on. I prefer the old movies hands down anytime!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

And even the new stuff has weak writing and mediocre actors. Lately we've been binge watching "Outlander" and its got sillier by the season. Started out decent, but just kind of goes off into left field after season 3. I want to bitch slap the writers.

I've been working my way on Youtube through the old Peter Gunn series and The Saint series with Roger Moore. Peter Gunn is as noir as it gets. It may have been the early inspiration for Robert Logia's short run TV show, T.H.E. Cat. Both have interesting jazz score and Gunn hangs out at a jazz bar called Mothers, and Cat hangs at a jazz bar called The Casa Del Gato. Both dark smoky clubs with great black and white photography and use of shadow and light.

The new stuff is like Wonder white bread.

You forgot Gary Cooper. He was an excellent leading man actor. I was never much of a Gable or Bogart fan. Alan Ladd.... and let's not forget the women. As a kid I looked at these women and saw "old" or dated styles. As I got older I saw some really beautiful women.

I do like the old movies but today's special effects are pretty remarkable. Wonder bread..... interesting comparison, however I suspect the younger folks would disagree with you. Some of the old movies that were colorized just don't have the same feel as the the originals in B&W.

YES!

In this time she defiantly is in the super hero class!:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Meaning movies that heavily feature police and other emergency workers would qualify as low-key superhero movies, right?

How about SWAT from 2003 with Samuel L. Jackson?

The main thing that I hate about ALL movies, and even science shows on the history channel and so forth, is that the background music is WAY TOO HIGH!! If I wanted to listen to their stupid music that bad I would buy the damn soundtrack. The background music is so high sometimes that I can barely understand what the people are saying. It's pathetic!

If you have a smart TV you may be able to turn down the background music level but not all TV's are capable of this.

I have a "dumb" tv. I haven't bought a "smart" tv because I am sure that after I read the TOS and privacy policies during setup, I'll click, "I do NOT accept". That's why I don't have an account with FB, Twitter, or any of that crap.
I had a smart tv given to me to repair that quit working. One of my nephews set it on the curb thinking that it was junk. By the time I realized what happened, someone already snatched it. Somebody got a nice 60 something inch smart tv that probably just had a corrupted EEPROM...

That's a great point. I remember reading an article about how much influence China has in demanding changes to films in order for them to be played in the country.

Superheroes have existed in movies for a long time. James Bond, Jason Bourne, Zorro, Rambo, The Rocketeer, Lara Croft, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, The Shadow, Neo, Sherlock Holmes, Gilgamesh, etc. Many of those characters have an aspect associated to them which is far above what a normal person can do, making them "super". The difference now is that Hollywood has the technology to produce the more elaborate special effects which are drawn in comic books.
