Does anyone like Ka-Bar?

I had another question. What is the coating on the Next Generation Ka-Bar? I saw this video just now the person looked like it had a grey spray paint coating on it. Others I have seen look like a bead blasted finish.

I believe that it is now just a spay-on paint kinda deal, no real benefit from it. I really don't care a whole lot for the next gens, but that's also because I really don't like stainless steel, especially 440. They could have picked so many better ones...

Their Dozier folders are also pretty well regarded here in their price range.

I have had their impact i'n d2 since it came out, think it was before Becker line i have used the knife for hunting, camping, tactical and pry tool on occasion
around the house etc. I am amazed at how well the knife has held up over the years. I have used it to bust stuff open beating on the back of the blade with whatever I could find at it never once damaged the knife or let me down. I wouldnt hesitate to buy another USA made kabar i'n d2 or another quality steel and from what I have read about the beckers they are a true work horse too

;) I love my Ka Bars. I have a full size USMC knife with leather wrapped handles. a full size black Ka Bar fighter, a full size desert colored Ka Bar w/ matching Ka Bar Mule, and I just ordered the short black fighter. I'm down with Ka Bars. I also own a Becker 2 and Becker 7.:D

Great knives, one of the best values, several sub-divisions i.e. Becker, and Johnson Adventure.

Good knives, as long as you choose the right one. I had an early Ka-Bar Marine knife, made by/in Camillus. It had the stacked leather handle. It broke on its first outing. Was chopping with it. Where it transitions from the blade to the handle, it went down to like only a 1/4". JUNK in my opinion. Full width tang is what you want. HOWEVER--- they DO sell MANY quality knives. I can't say enough good things about the Becker line of knives, Spec Plus line, or the Marine Raider Bowie. :D

Camillus made their version of the MK2 but had nothing to do with Kabars MK2, alot of manufacturers have made a "kabar" Mk2... The camillus was built the same as the kabar, with the stick tang and leather washers... that being said probably not the best option for heavy chopping... Camillus knives were just as reliable and comparable quality as Kabar's version... Just about any leather washer handled knife has a similar construction, was/is still popular.
The kabar style knife is a classic and is tough enough for what it was intended to do. Depending what the OP wants to use it for the MK2 would do alright... unless he's gonna pry with it or heavy chop...

I especialy like there less expensive folders like the bob doziers they can't be beat for the money also I kinda hate to admit it but I like those lime green handles on the zombie killers I may have to pick one up just for the heck of it.

Hers my kabar strapped on my bug out bag, I got it courtesy of the Army over 10 years ago and it still cutting strong, a very good classic knife that will be handed down.

Agreed, but i'm just sayin', if a Marine had this knife in combat, it would most definately be put through more stress that what i did. 2nd chop, it broke. You could put more stress on that knife just by using it what it was intended for, if you hit bone. Our soldiers deserve MUCH better than that. I'm just sayin'. :D

i get that but the camillus was issued (alot of them not to mention they made knives for everybody else) at some point along with the kabar, utica, etc. They all made that model to spec... and they worked fine since before WW2, i'm not saying they are perfect but the design has stood the test of time... ive got a Catt 225Q stick tang/leather handle, thats managed to make to the ripe old age of 67+/- years, ive owned it 3 years now and use it yearly during the summer...
Perhaps you got a dud which sucks but i dont think thats indicative of the knife design on the whole...
Are there better knives, yeah. But the leather Handle Kabar is a classic and tons of guys have used it without mass failures. but its not an axe or a prybar
i'm just saying ;)

I also own an Impact in D2 and used it, last year, on 4 back country excursions into the Adirondack Mts. One tough performer for under $75! That's the big payoff with KaBar, their knives outperform their price tag.

Just curious are they full tang? I dont really want to buy one and then the handle snap off under some stress.

Search for threads where the title (never mind the posts) contains the word 'kabar'. I get at least 20 pages. Yeah - people like them.

Beckerhead #42

I have always appreciated the Ka-Bar fixed blades but wrote off their folders. Then a buddy of mine let me handle his large Dozier folding hunter. Well I figured what the heck, for under $30 I will give it a try. It finds its way into my pocket all the time now and i'm pretty impressed with it. Now i'm looking to get a Dozier Phat Bob folder, just looks like a good chunky knife. Its funny to me that I became a knife snob and didn't realize it, meaning just because a knife doesn't cost $200+ doesn't mean its not good.
