Does chopping a really hard wood like mesquite or brazilian harwood damage a knife?

Polamalu,

How do you test the RC with an Instron? i might try it since i have access to one.

How about: If you chop the wood with a machete - a $15 tool for cutting grass - then you should damn well be able to cut with a dedictated wood chopping knife costing almost 20 times as much?

I agree. My go to comparison blade has become a Tramontina machete. If it has a similar edge to that machete, I expect it to hold up at least as well.

Axes are commonly ground at different angles depending on the type of forest in which they will be used. Thinner for Boreal softwoods, thicker for Deciduous hardwoods. Seems entirely reasonable to apply this concept to chopping knives as well. Steel type and hardness are also major factors.

IMO the user needs to know the appropriateness of the tool at hand and act accordingly. When in doubt, start off easy.
