Does EDC actually mean Every Day Carry?

But any of your daily drivers could potentially be your EDC, if you were suddenly struck with financial chaos and could only justify keeping a couple? That plus using them as regular carry knives is close enough for conversation, isn't it? I don't think 'EDC' is supposed to be some pure achievement of faithfulness to one single tool. At least nobody else seems to think that, beyond those who speculate that 'EDC' is a flagrantly misused term because it often refers to one of a collection of knives that are all well-suited for the owner's daily carry and associated tasks rather than a singular knife that the owner always carries.

Think of it in terms of design and intended purpose. A nice-feeling titanium framelock that looks good and inspires some pride of ownership and is designed in such a way that it would be a good choice for a regular person's regular daily life is an exemplary EDC kind of knife. A massively grippy, oversized, overbuilt Cold Steel might be a great daily knife for someone in a handful of different occupations, but it is clearly not itself an 'EDC knife', even though some maniacs do carry such knives every day of their blessed lives. Using these terms to differentiate what market it is intended for is the best way in my view. Lots of us may carry one knife most of the time for a prolonged period, before rotating it out for some time, and then working it back into the rotation later. That's an EDC knife even though it's not a monogamous relationship and the knife isn't literally stapled to the owner's hand for their entire life.

My first thought is yes, by definition, an edc knife is literally one that you carry every day.

Saying that, in my opinion, it is just as an acceptable term used to describe a knife that could conceivably be carried every day.

EDC is a practice not a brand or model. I carry a knife every day. Along with some tools, a flashlight, a pen and more.

If one day I change from a folder to a fixed blade because I'm headed to the woods that doen't affect my mindset.

Since everyone's day is different, depending on profession and lifestyle, I'd say the term is wholly subjective as to design. A fisherman's EDC will look different from mine, but so long as the knife is purposed to the task required on the daily, it qualifies.

That said, this is my literal EDC. The blade is by Dylan Farnham. It's good for everything and fits discreetly in my waistband.

Wow don't want to meet up with you them knuckles are awesome.

I fall into the "category" camp rather than the "inventory" camp. So what I mean is that I have certain things that I will carry every day. I will have a flashlight, first aid kit, and knife, every day. I might change out those things based on where I am, what I'm doing, for example, my current normal carry is a Leatherman Surge, Fenix E30R and I can find some dirty rags around the shop. But if I'm out walking it'll be a headlamp and a single-blade folder probably. Point is that I make a point to carry certain things every day as a habit. Some people will only carry what they think they will need for the day, which is up to them. Sort of the Descriptivist vs Proscriptivist versions of language. EDC means many things to many people. It may well be that it fits better in the exclusionary role, as in "this knife is not a good EDC, because for most people it would be too difficult to carry without specialized clothing" or "This knife is too specialized to be considered EDC for most people".

If I've seen that pikal before, I feel like I am seeing it all over again for the first time. It's visceral and organic, and amazing! Like the talon of a mutant big bird. Quite a piece of art right there!

My Neon is in my left pocket every day with my flashlight. I switch up the knife in my right pocket pretty much every day.

It can be used in different ways and mean different things.

I EDC a knife. Everyday I carry a knife.

This is my EDC knife. I carry this specific knife everyday

An EDC knife. A knife suitable to be carried everyday.

An EDC knife rotation. A group of knives I rotate through

I’ve trained my brain to say the words when I see an anachronisn as opposed to just the letters. It bothers me when the anachronism itself becomes a word and is used in a way that doesn’t make sense.

For example people will say and write RPM’s. The ‘s doesn’t belong if you say the words it is obvious. Revolutions Per Minute’s makes no sense.

Edit to mention that the extra apostrophes in this post are for S Stelth

EDC means Every Day Carry that can be used for self defense should the need arise, to me. I EDC four different types of knives but my main EDC Is a fixed blade. That's not counting a handgun.

To the OP, what's the reasoning for not carrying a knife everyday? I rotate through dozens in my collection. Which one I choose to EDC depends on mood, seasons, destinations, etc. I consider them all to be EDC because they are all users. I always have a knife.....always. Everyone in my small circle knows this and it's probably why they don't bother with one, my wife being a prime example :D

All kidding aside, I tend to stick with what works until worn out or lost. Going by my past carries that typically means 2 to 5 years for a folder or multi tool. I'm on 2 years for my current flashlight and lighter. I'll occasionally change things up for a wedding or other special occasion, but I tend to carry the same stuff all the time.
