Does EDC actually mean Every Day Carry?

“EDC” to me means a knife that has the characteristics making it suitable to be the one knife you can carry every day... and I would take it a step further to say “for the average person”.

For example: “The average person” might enjoy the Benchmade Bugout as an EDC. “The average person” might not enjoy a Microtech combat troodon with tanto blade.

Yes, every day carry for about 30 years = Vic. Tinker. G.O.A.T.

SAK - don't leave home without one (or two).

I currentle EDC a leatherman, buy as soon as I receive my new knife, I'll EDC just that one

Maybe it's because I'm really picky, but I know that if I got a big collection, I'll regret not having "that specific knife that would have been so perfect for that task".

I prefer to carry a single less perfect knife that somehow regreting having it.

Almost all of mine get "pocket time".
But I'm not against calling for backup: when the job requires it.
The Mnandi won't get called on for cutting anything much tougher than packaging material...
But the XM-18 might be called on; for prying a wooden box apart...
It all depends on what knife is riding close at the time.

I will very rarely cary the same knife two days in a row, rotation provides variety and enjoyment. Indecently I also tend to rotate my watch and wallet, maybe not daily but no more than weekly. When I think EDC I think in terms of all my gear that make up my EDC collection rather than any individual piece of gear.

I see some pictures of EDC and I wonder if the "carry-er" is wearing a Batman utility belt!? For me always/religiously I have a fixed blade that's sole purpose is a "get off me now," a folder and the small Leatherman Style. I also always carry my pistol, spare mag and a flashlight.

It becomes habit and over the course of the last 15 years normal.

An EDC to me is the one knife that is always with you. It is not necessarily you best knife, most useful knife, or favorite knife, it is just the one that you know is always there. It may ride around in your pocket or hang with your house keys. But, on any given day, in the absence of a more appropriate tool, you know that you can always reach into the usual pocket and pull out the same old knife and use it to solve the immediate problem.

Having an EDC does not preclude you from carrying other knives. You can carry a backpack full of them if it makes you happy. Your EDC doesn’t care if you cheat on it. But, like a true friend, it is always there when needed.

Wow! Tell me again: who needs the utility belt??
If you added a canteen and space blanket: you'd be ready for a week of camping in the Adirondacks!

😂 That's fair! But in reality it's quite simple. Fixed on belt at the 9 o'clock, pistol is carried appendix with spare mag opposite. Folder in my front left pocket, Leatherman in the watch pocket and flashlight front left.

Hi, for me EDC is a set of every day carry items like knife, wallet, pen, watch, mobile phone e.t.c. without strong connection with exact models. But I really like when some of them stick to me for along time.

I was just having some fun... I DO admire your state of readiness!
When we hunt in the Adirondacks: everybody is expected to be ready to spend a night in the woods... in December!
flashlight, spare batteries, food, water, space blanket, fresh socks, spare compass, hatchet, and most important: fire making materials.
In 50 years: we've had a few instances where guys got "turned around" in the swamps. They all made it out okay...

The term EDC to me can have different meanings. Yes literal interpretation is one. I also think of it as a classification.

If the Grips were up there: he'd never be able to reach them in time...
Cross-draw carry.

EDC means everyday carry, yet who here actually has just one knife they carry every day? Like most guys on here I have a selection of knives to choose from, yet I don’t carry any of them “every day”.
So I generally say everyday I carry a knife, but I don’t carry (insert brand here) everyday.

I had to sell off most of my knives. I kept a Para 3, my SAK, and I recently bought a fixed blade (SRK) for camping. Then my Para 3's blade broke in half, so I ordered a Rat 1 to replace it.

Short of it is, I can honestly say I have been EDC'ing the same knives for months now. Now my true EDC is my Rat 1. The SAK doesn't always come with me.

I'll build my collection back up. But going through harder financial times has given me an appreciation for having a solid knife in your pocket, even if it's Aus 8 steel!
