Does this kind of sharpener even WORK?!

ok so first of all most of the field sharpeners do not work i will give you that, however all of you that doubt or hate on the benchmade field sharpener are crazy or just obviously have not really tried one. i can GUARANTEE that i can take one and equal or better anything you can do with a stone. period. you can sharpen an axe a hatchet or any straight blade i use it on broadheads for hunting too , it is the single best investment i think i have ever made. so back off before you try one

Knifenut1013's edges are way better than mine but can your drag through sharpened edges even do this?

The one post wonder is in for quite the shock when he actually learns what sharp really is.

Chrisco thought he was slick but when the heat got turned up he melted away :(

P.S. Welcome to BF :)

You gotta admit, the kid must have to tote 'em around in a wheelbarrow coming in here and making such an outlandish, boastful first post. What's really gonna hurt is when he finds out how wrong he is.

I came across this Benchmade sharpener on knifecenter.com, and I have to wonder, why is Benchmade even marketing a drag-through-a-V sharpener?

Ever since I learned how to sharpen on a stone, I have regarded these things as FOLLY. How can they possibly work? Does the kind like the one in this link work? Is it even a decent temporary substitute for sharpening on a real stone using a real method? I'm reluctant to believe it is even that.

Benchmade field sharpener that I can't believe would do any good

Just wondering, what did you do before you learned to sharpen on a stone ?

I have one of these made by Smith's. The PocketPal. It was $ 9.00. It's cool.
Carbide and ceramic, plus a small rod that swings out for serrations or whatever.
It is about the size of a USB thumbdrive.
It works great as a feild sharpener and weighs next to nothing.
I can sure do better with bench stones. but these type aren't supposed to replace bench stone, so we shouldn't compare. Feild sharpener is for field sharpening.

Why not just carry a folded piece of leather in a ziplock bag loaded with 6 micron diamond paste instead:confused:?

Sorry man, if you can't split atoms with your knife after sharpening, it's just a futile, uphill battle.

I'd take Chrisco's challenge, too. I am sure I could get a knife sharper just honing it on a concrete block than the pull-through sharpener gets it.

I guess I must be crazy then. I own one, I tried it, it didn't do my blade any good at all. I have since sharpened that blade with my DMT Aligner (and it IS sharp now) and my Benchmade field sharpener has been sitting in a drawer unused for over a year. In my view this sharpener is absolute junk, it IS a carbide blade pull through sharpener and the results are pitiful.

I'd like to see the challenge issued by chriscov021 taken up by knifenit1013 and I'd like to put my money on knifenut1013 for a clear win by a LARGE margin.

Well, as long as the challenge is up, I'll put my money on Richard J. and his paper wheels. I don't have a practical use for whittled hair, but for all round real world knife use, Richard J. and the paper wheel system is the way to go - and there will be plenty of time left over to do several more.

I'd put my money on Richard J too. He's been doing this a long time, longer than most here.

I've had/have knives he's sharpened & made. They are hands down the sharpest knives I've ever had the pleasure of using.

Why don't we make this challenge interesting? One of us ought to go outside and MAKE a sharpener with whatever we can find (urban guys might find broken ceramic tiles or mugs, country boys may have to resort to stropping mud loaded hardwood) and post up results.

My money would be on the veterans who will prove knowledge/wisdom beats gadgetry.

I am not saying pull through sharpeners are junk though. There are WAY too many people that satisfy their needs with them to call them junk!
