if ANYTHING, man or beast, came running and yelling/barking/roaring and being agressive toward me. youre damn sure im ready to give it hell.

they're guarding YOU...their pack leader....

Honestly, this thread worries me. It seems like a lot of you pack heat and are VERY EAGER to use it.....

It's Internet Badass Syndrome, not reality.

And don't call me Francis.

evobouret im from oahu westside grew up nanakuli born and raised....choke mean dogs and mean owners...i dont know how many times i had to run from dogs just walking home from school, what were they gaurding? eventually i learned you give them a swift kick in the face they leave you alone.

so I can see this is turning in to a have dogs, vs, not have dogs rumble here...with imaginary dogs getting shot,,, and imagnary owners avenging the deaths of they're fallen camrades with samurai like efficiency..(seems everyone know best)
unfortunately allot of this kind of stuff goes on in many threads.. it;s one if not the only reason I don;t post much here anymore...it's a shame because at 1 time I felt a strong sense of comradery here..

You know what I mean then? Take this for example, you're hiking in the hills above Nanakuli, someone's half pitbull cross hunting dog comes out and starts barking at you, keeps it distance greater than 15' but has hackles raised etc...You draw your gun and KILL this dog because you percieve it as a threat.

Now the two big braddahs around the corner hear the gunshot and come running to see you standing over their dead dog with a smoking gun...

What do you think those braddahs will do to you after 3 years of training, feed, vet bills? It wouldn't be pretty I'll tell you that much, and in your guys' mindsets you'd have to execute the two of them as well.

???

I'm stoked we dont have crazy ex mil guys hiking around packing heat with the intention of using it on something other than pigs/goats.

.

Come on man, take a few deep breaths, all of us mil guys, ex or not, are not running around armed looking for a fight, Rambo was just a movie. Chris

EDIT: Think I will back out of this thread, much too much testosterone and posturing.

Sorry, I said I was gone then came back. I'm really gone now.

Dont blame me im a left wing democrat that voted for Obama ;)

15ft is a perfect distance....thats no threat....and i never said id shoot a dog...just kick it or hit it away...which ive done to all of peoples dogs that get too close, barking and gnarling never had anyone harass me for it.

People that would "lose it" if somebody killed their dog need to have control over the dog.

Let me get this right, your going to go hiking with a dog that does not obey your commands, then when it goes running up on me barking and charging with you yelling for it to come back, and it basically ignoring you and I bash it in the cranium, you are going to blame me for the incident and come after me?

OK, bring it on, because at that point I am going to consider you just as aggressive as the dog "used to be" before I dispatched it.

Agreed, if a dog attacks someone it's stupid of the owner to go ballistic at the victim. I'm betting it often isn't that simple though. Let's have a hypothetical... Let me see.....I'm hiking along with my dogs on leashes with my kids and wife, ....... dog see's a squirrel and manages to slip his leash and tear off around a corner and I chase after him yelling. Dog rounds the corner and sees you and runs up wanting to check you, or your dog, out before I can get to him. However, as soon as he runs up to you barking and already excited, you decide to pre-emptively brain him with a cane before waiting a second or two longer to get the whole picture. Kids see beloved Fido brained by you.... You are absolutely right we're going to have some words. I'll apologize for him slipping off his leash but I'll just about definitely lose my tolerance and call you out for being recklessly overactive. Hopefully you would not choose to take it to the next level but your amped up and so am I so I'll definitely be fine with kicking up a notch or 50 in this kind of emotional situation and it would likely end up as an avoidable tragedy for everyone involved.

I'm not saying let a dog bite you but just because a dog runs up to you barking doesn't necessarily mean he's vicious and out to kill you. Accidents can happen and there's no need to automatically exacerbate a situation unless it really is a serious problem. I have many times had a dog, owner or person run up to me in less than favorable conditions. I stayed calm and had my hand on the grip of my out of sight .45 and the safety off, biding my time and letting the situation play out without incident. No one knew the wiser how close they came to meeting their maker had they made the wrong choices, but I also didn't pre-emptively act since that would not be justifiable self-defense IMO.

Leash your dogs and it won't be a percieved threat to someone who doesn't know it. Be a responsible pet owner. :)
And .... no fake poop pickups.. we can spot that a mile away ;)
No one likes walking thru a dookie minefield! :p

Wow, so many controversial opinions.
First of all, I agree that most dogs should be on a leash when hiking.
I love dogs, and I own a dog who's rather aggressive towards dogs, not humans. Even so, I really try to keep the dog on a leash. Many times I encountered people who don't have their dogs on leashes, which lead to a minor dog "fight" between their dog and mine.
Even though it did strike me as a threat for my dog, I've never hit or thought of maiming the attacking dog. THEY ARE ONLY DOGS!! we really got to understand it. Having a walking stick and simply pushing the other dog away usually works for me. But then again my dog can take care of business, and his fearless character proves once yet that some things happen just to teach us one thing or another.

The main thing going outdoors is to be ready, which means that sometimes you'd rather just carry a dog repelant. If indeed you think there's a chance of meeting an unleashed dog, and an unresponsible owner. My dog once bit a can of this stuff, and even though it felt weird, drooling and coughing for 10-15 minutes, no harm was done! Stabbing or beating a dog with a stick is just brutal.

Sometimes dogs get aggressive out of nowhere because of reasons we cannot know or see at the time. Try to be understanding and BRAVE! Since fear is what leads us to react with exaggeration.

Mind you though, if I saw that the owner reaches for something while I try to fend the dog away... It's bye bye, to the unlucky "samurai".

ok, im back again...wanted to make my point a little clearer than mud:

If my dog ever attacked you, a family member or your dog. And you had to use force to stop the attack. Then I couldn't be angry over what happens after that.

Seriously, this is a W&SS thread. I've seen other wild animals and people out camping in remote places and didn't feel I had to blast 'em unless they presented a tangible and immediate threat to me or mine. I must just not be as easily threatened as lot of other folks I guess.

You know, this thread started off reasonably enough, with some decent reasoned opinions. Where all this bad-a** "I'll kill anything that walks, talks, crawls or breathes that gets within a mile of me" stuff is coming from, I don't know: I do know that I can do without it.

I can see Rescue Riley's point, and it's a bloody shame that one of our best posters should feel that way. Threads don't have to turn out this way.

Forgot to mention. I know a guy that shot and killed 5 hunting dogs with a 10/22 that were in his yard grabbing one of his pen raised pigs.

He had to have reconstructive surgery on his face......Maybe things in Hawai'i just work differently then on the mainland?

Not pointing at anyone in particular but FWIW, should any of the ronin ever be unfortunate enough to have to use force against a human in any situation the braggadocio posted here may well deliver a bite MUCH worse than any dog could.

I'm safe.

I'm a cat person. No way 'Mister Kibbles' could cause any problems while hiking with me

...just trying to lighten the mood:rolleyes:
