Dogs loose in the woods-your opinion?

You can call BS all you want, but I have had many a dog, and never had one slip a properly placed choker while walking under my control, including my 85 lb Boxer and a rather large Shep. But then I always had them on a leash in public and they were rather well behaved. Maybe they just didn't care about squirrels.

In any case, if you have a "houdini" you should probably train the dog to listen to you.

I don't really agree with the anology of the perceived threat with the belt knife. That is more like a dog on a leash. Has the capacity to cause harm, but is under check. Now if the person draws it and is advancing knife in hand, THAT is like a dog coming at me off the leash.

If a dog really did mean harm, few would be capable of fighting it off in "Reality" anyway, so there is that, isn't there?

I handle it case by case, but in general, follow the law and leash your dogs. If there is no law where you hike, do so with the knowledge if your dog is killed while you are not in sight or control of it, it is the other hikers word against your dead dogs word.

ppl are afraid of things they don't understand. so what the hell are ppl afraid of dogs doing in the woods to begin with if you can encounter coyotes, bobcats, bears etc..

This statement doesn't make much sense. I am concerned about anything that can hurt me or mine, whether I understand it or not. Your attitude seems to be "if a bear/lion/wolf/thug could hurt me, what's the use in worrying about a dog attack?"

I carry pepper spray, a stout walking stick, a knife or two, and a high power, high capacity hand gun with me when I'm out and about to deal with threats. I don't care how upset dog owners get at the thought of someone hurting their pet -- your dog threatens me, or ESPECIALLY my kids, it will be dealt with exactly like any other threat.

no offense, but I think hikers should understand that when they are leaving the security of their homes, they should be prepared for anything and not bitch and moan at every opportunity that presents itself. You'll run into hikers that will even make you feel like shit for letting your dog loose, I say to hell with them they shouldn't be there to start with.
I AM prepared for anything. If people keep their dogs under control, there will be no problems.

It started off so well, and then... and then... wow.

So if you can't control your dog, keep it on a leash.

"On a leash" means it won't slip the leash if it "sees a squirrel"

Really. Let's be a realistic.

Nobody here is going to go bashing and blasting Benji if they don't perceive a threat. If ya have a big pup and let it roll around loose running up on people, you run the chance of someone perceiving that as a threat. Otherwise, your good to go.

AGAIN, if you can't control your dog, keep it on a leash!

Here is a test, if anyone has EVER acted afraid around your dog on the trail, REGARDLESS of whether your dog was a threat or not, you PROBABLY should keep it on a leash at all times.

Not BS at all....... straight forward, simple, and plain.

And if you can't keep your 'pet' from 'slipping out' of a leash, halter, or harness...... and you can't / don't control it....... leave it at home or don't be surprised if something "sad" happens to it.

All this seems rather elementary. Many people do not want your uncontrolled 'pet' harassing them on public property..... period.

Granted, some people will tolerate it... while others will terminate it. ;)

If you can't stand it, -- don't read it.

* ****** **** ****** *

I agree with Kev, though. No one is going to say anything that hasn't been said already.
Before the trolls have any more fun, I will close it.
