Those of us who have been around bladeforums for any length of time are no doubt familiar with Don Hanson III, master smith and knife maker extraordinaire. We are very fortunate to have Don's input in many of the threads right here in this forum and I've enjoyed meeting and chatting with Don at the last few Blade Shows.

Recently Don let me know that my name had come to the fore on his list and that we could finalize our project.

Though Don specializes in (definitely functional) high end art knives, he has never lost his love and appreciation for knives that will be carried and used and my intention was to have Don build me a knife that I could proudly pocket and put into service.

Don's metier (with slipjoints) is the single blade trapper pattern in both "slim" and "standard" varieties. (Though I'm lucky enough to own one of his early "sunfish" in rosewood and damascus.)

I'm more a fan of the standard trapper vs. the slim or light version of the knife so I asked Don if that would be an issue. Don sent me an image of one of his more upscale damascus trappers with the heavier frame and told me that he could build me one with a closed length of 4" as requested.

Since Don ordinarily uses more of a "clasp knife" style trapper frame, I asked if he would add the "swell" so that the frame would be more like a Remington style trapper. "No problem" was the reply.

As to the steel, something that Don takes very seriously, I asked for W2 which, as many of you already know, has become Don's signature carbon steel.

Though I won't have the knife for a few more days, I just couldn't resist sharing some images that Don was kind enough to share with me. Hope you enjoy looking at them.

Elliott, I don't know how long you had to languish on Don's list, but it was certainly worth it for that trapper. It's beautiful!

Thank you, friend. :cool::thumbup:

The knife gods are not without a sense of humor, however. Somehow they conspire to ensure that several makers (whose lists you have been patiently waiting on) all begin building your knife within the same week or two. :p

So, suffice it to say that I'll be posting a few reviews in the next few weeks while eating soda crackers in front of the monitor. ;) (And yes, it's worth it! :p)

Congratulations on your new treasure Elliot. Looks to be a fine knife.

I'm sure you will love that knife Elliott. I like the swell in the handle. Don's W2 is one of the best cutting steels I have.

Is this Blade Part XII for you? :D

Good for you Blues.
It's going to be a spectacular piece.
Looking forward to seeing it finished.

I'm jealous. I can't wait to see this one finished. That stag is on a whole different level.

Yeah, this one is coming along pretty good. Was goin to do it without a shield but it looked naked.

W2? I must be the only one using it in folders :) It is good stuff, super fine grain, high carbon tool steel with a touch of vanadium. I heat treat it to around a 60 Rc hardness and it cuts great.

Will hammer it together tomorrow, finish off the bolsters, scales and back. Hopefully it'll still open and close ;)

Thanks, Elliot !

Don is being way too modest!

What he didn't say is that when I told him that I could get along without a shield (to try to save a few bucks)...he decided to go ahead and put one on anyway at no additional cost (just because).

Needless to say...it tells a lot about the man.:thumbup:

That is one great knife! Good for you Blues (Elliot):D:thumbup: Can't wait for the weeks ahead ie... show of knives;) Great design!

Lookin' good, Elliott! The addition of the swell in Don's design works well. Can't wait to see this finished up!

Did Don cut the heads off of those screws?? ;) :D

That's a beautiful looking knife! Congratulations Elliott.

The original owner of that stag must have been a magnificent individual lurking in some giant forest.

Yes, your knife cabinet certainly runneth over and we benefit from the views!
