Don't fear the hipster

I think a lot of the hipster crowd is into "vintage-retro." I have a strong feeling the traditional knife market has a fair number of hipsters in the ranks.

The title of this thread could easily be weird Al's next big hit, as long as B.O.C gives his permission 😁
"C'mon baby don't fear the hipster "

I actually started thinking about how to tweak the verse to make it fit as soon as I read it. "got sus-pen-ders on. Ride my bike to town. Baristas don't fear the hipsters, nor do the record store clerks, come on baby...."

Howdy sharp folks,

I have a growing feeling knives are becoming the new hipster accessory, thanks to the joined efforts of several brands (ZT being the one I think about the most).

People seems to be more and more obsessed about the hype, the social status and the cool factor more than anything else.

I'm afraid the future of knives will be in the line of:

Eco friendly knives
Durable development knives
Fair trade knives
Organic grown knives
Gluten free knives
100% made out of recycled material knives
iKnives (argh!)
....

Am I a delusional hermit, or did someone else noticed a similar trend?
It's already from long time. Knives made from files, chainsaws, automobile parts with micarta from old jeans etc.

Who says they won't have to batton wood on their front porch so they can cook their wood fired, gluten free, fair trade, free range, kimchi, and goat cheese pizza in their wood stove they handcrafted from locally sourced bricks?

I live in lower Manhattan and I know my hipsters. A fancy-looking folder make of carbon fiber, titanium, and premium stainless steel would immediately be dismissed as "techie." Seriously uncool.

No self-respecting hipster or urban lumberjack would be caught dead with a knife that didn't feature wood, carbon steel, and a leather sheath. Throw in a forced patina for good measure. It's got to be traditional, fiddly, and require lots of maintenance.

Think Svord Peasant ... not a ZT flipper

Still trying to figure out why I should care what motivates anyone else to carry a knife. No luck so far.

I welcome the hipster folk to our hobby. Plenty of room for everyone.

Word[emoji106] The last guy I saw carrying a fixed blade in my city was definitely hipster, by definition. Cool boots?Cool jeans?Good beer?Cool knives? I'm cool with all that[emoji106]
Beats the wanna-be commandos in my mind.

If Hipsters want to carry knives, let em. It's a free country. Honestly, I think we'd benefit from knives becoming mainstream. The more people that carry knives, the less we get hassled by sheeple and tightening of laws. I mean if you can make the mainstream public believe knives are a fashion choice instead of a weapon, the better the environment will be for those of us that love knives. Maybe people in New York can truly carry again. That's how I see it. And btw, my skinny jeans can carry any size and weight.

Knives have a long history of being man-baubles. Only moreso in the modern era. This very active forum is testament to that fact, catering to all the styles, all the markets, allowing users to stratify users and makers into a hierarchy of good, bad, etc. The market is flooded with really neat knives implementing features and innovations that few ever asked for, yet many lust after anyway and will defend passionately.

A hipster, however you define it, doesn't change that situation in the least. All it does is expand the market.

Who's gonna do some flannel micarta?

I'm surprised shadetree doesn't if they haven't already. I've seen some they made out of burlap, denim, and firehouse. I really like how they came out. Flannel might be a bit noisy for my tastes.

Maybe start with gingham?

I know, i thought hipsters were dressing up like lumber jacks now :) We should be worried about our axe/hatchet prices going up!

Way ahead of you, check out Best Made Co. if you want to see a whole bunch of $350 axes that will never get used.

If it's a trend it's no longer hipster (hipsters set the trends), it's the adopters or faux hipsters.

You're right about the hipster knife thing, however you're looking in the wrong direction. I won't put her name, but Google "Brooklyn knife maker". I'm all for someone creating a product and selling it, but the prices she is charging for this completely nonfunctional knife is pretty laughable.
Who's doesn't love to cheese grate your food while you're slicing it ? [emoji23]

I live in the Portland, OR area and I have to admit that I found your scenario (minus the gluten free), very appealing. I've been dreaming of building a wood fired, brick pizza oven. . . Wait a second. . . Am I a hipster?!?!?
