Bolsters can dress up, and strengthen a pocket knife!!! I've seen them drive a tack in some cases among other oddball uses!! But are they really necessary??
If the liners and handles are sturdy, the knife will stand up to reasonable chores, without loosening or wobbling the blades!!!
In many ways, bolsters are optional, but not needed!! Whey else would we have so many knives without them?? This thread is dedicated to the knives that don't have, and indeed don't need those shiny chunks of metal!!! Here are some examples!!Three Stags 1.jpgThree Stags 2.jpg
Please post your shadows, if you have them!!

Three beautiful stags Charlie. It does make for an uncluttered and beautiful knife.
I would assume a cheaper build too.

I have some examples of shadow pattern knives, but I have no idea how many.
I'll just work my way through my alphabetical picture files and see what I can find. I'm sure it will take me several posts over several days to locate the shadow patterns I have.

Here's one from AGRussell (thanks for both knife and slip, John). (For inquiring minds, AGRussell is listed under "A" in my filing system.)

Here's a Richards shadow pen knife (thanks, Bob). (My Richards knives are in the folder "British".)

Here's a Brother lockback:

I don't know if these two knives count for this thread. One is a Böker Plus Atlas with copper covers, and the other is a John Watts ring opener with stainless steel covers (another knife from the "British" folder - thanks, Jack). I don't know whether they should be considered NO bolsters or ALL bolster, due to the all-metal covers.

No, just about 1/8" difference in frame length and blade length. Some say the Farm&Field has the advantage in that it has a lanyard hole but to me it really makes no difference in usability.
Thank you for your thoughts Ed.
