Hey Guys/Gals. Well I picked up and posted about a Hest 2.0 I picked up a couple days ago. My first impressions were VERY favorable.

However, I used it today to baton soft pine 2x4's into kindling, using another soft 2x4 to baton with. The knife split wood like a champion. I made splinters out of two 2x4's...but after doing so, my blade has so much play, you can hear it when you shake it. I will continue buying axis locking folders, not that they are wiithout problems either. I have seen this myself.

I know folding knives are supposed to fold, but for 175.00 I expect the lock on a folding knife to at least stay strong for a while.

At least I have the Rotoblock.

Stupid use for a folding knife !!!!
When one batons with a folder one shouldn't engage the lock!
Its your knife to do with what you please, but you can't fault the design or manufacturer for the rattle you caused.
Doesn't seem like a warranty issue to me, sounds like the misuse of a tool.

Well said....no batoning with a folder. I don't care how tough anyone says it is.....you're bound to have problems. Don't blame the knife manufacturer!

You made splinters out of a 2x4 with a folding knife and you are upset because it has bladeplay? I would expect any knife to have bladeplay after that.

I've heard of people batoning with folders...and then I've heard of blade play... :(
Swamp, you'll probably get many people raining over you on this thread...you just seem to have made a bad call with your knife.

OK, then. Maybe I messed up. Does anyone have the picture of a knife being batoned through a peice of wood off of the DPX website? I have been looking but it's hard to find. I did find it earlier today and was sure it was the hest 2.0. If that is infact a fixed blade, I will gladly admit I messed up. I thought it was the 2.0 folder though. and was pretty sure...

Chris it is very possible. I do however want to see the pic that is on the DPX webite "somewhere" to surface. I know what I saw and he was batoning a knife through a peice of wood that looked half petrified. I could not care less about the the money, I want the truth.

Maybe you need an axe... :p
You are right. I actually do need an axe. But I am looking hard to find the pics of the hest 2.0 being batoned. Tust me I have no stake in this at all. Infact, the only reason I batoned with it was because of the pictures of RYP doing so.

To be honest, I'm one of the folks who doesn't process wood with a knife at all. More power to the folks who do baton and enjoy doing so, though.

Hope it all works out with your folder, fella...

Cheers!

How does the lockbar portion look? If it didn't get badly mangled you might be good if you just tighten it up and see what it's like, if it doesn't rattle or have blade-play then get some loctite and re-tighten again.

If it's a crappy loctite substitute, too little of the good stuff, or none at all you might have just loosened it up a good amount.

There are pictures of people batonning with the HEST/F and they seemed to have no problems, but batonning with any folder isn't recommended. Some people don't even believe in batonning at all lol.

they used to have the no questions asked warranty when ESEE was a part(or at least for the HEST), but I think they now just offer the standard lifetime warranty.

still looking for that one pic though.

OK guys, we can let this one die. I own 14 CRK knives. I regularly beat on three of them. (Yes battoning) I will continue. I know the price range is different. All of my CRK's never had a problem even when doing things to them most here would cringe at. Lets let this old dog lie, unless someone can find that pic.

Everyone has there own way of doing things. Machete, big knife, small knife, axe. were all on the same team when the dust settles. Remember that. We all are fighting to keep our edged tools!!! JSM.

I have the hest 2.0 and it is buffalo tough, tho I havent batoned wood with it. Perhaps the OP speaks of the HEFT 4 or 6 which are fixed blades also made by lion steel. No pics but just a thought......
