However, I used it today to baton soft pine 2x4's into kindling, using another soft 2x4 to baton with. The knife split wood like a champion. I made splinters out of two 2x4's...but after doing so, my blade has so much play, you can hear it when you shake it back and forth.

Every where I turn I hear another story of how crap this knife is - one way or another

BTW, I am with the OP. I often baton with folders - there's a trick to it right enough, and it shouldn't screw up the pivot

Cos, you have to admit that you can split up white pine with your thumbnail most of the time - it is not as if splitting the stuff is the great task or anything :D:D

Maybe it isn't so difficult, but that doesn't mean you should baton a folding knife through it. Batoning any knife is hard on it. It's a lot of stress involved and it can never entirely controlled. While I do personally endorser it's use, I also realize that it should be done with caution at at one's own risk.

The issue could be that titanium (the frame of the HEST-F) can be reasonably ductile so the impact of the batoning may be enough to deform the pivot hole or the lock bar. The durability of other ti frame locks in comparison would then lie in their design and metallurgy.

Too funny dude!

I was laughing hard at this and then looking at my $20 Victorinox Camper's saw blade and laughing some more. It always goes with me and one of my tactical ninja folders.
Lol, yeah I keep a small Fiskars hatchet in my trunk. I'm not doing anything derp with my expensive folders and then running to the forums to complain about it.

I guess for under 200.00 I shouldn't expect too much. My bad guys. At least it didn't shatter when I hit it.

You never said if the lock-bar face was mangled and/or if you tried tightening it back up...it might be fine still.

I have no doubt that my $38 Voyager could baton with reason and have zero evidence that it took place - but I'd still much, much rather bust out the Victorinox saw - can go to any Target and replace it for $20 - would have to wait for another Cold Steel folder to come in the mail and pay double if I went too crazy on it or fate was laughing at me.

No way was the face mangled. It split VERY easy. A swiss army knife passed this test, without snapping off the tip. Using a saw? I was with the grain not against it? Go figure?

This is an example of when parents are not proud of their kid. They know something is not right with Jonny.

Please elaborate. Are you talking about me? If so you are off base sir. An explanation is in order regardless. For all of us here as a family at bladeforums. Don't you think? Everyone has their own opinion, and rightfully so. But personal attacks are unbecoming. Sir.

Swamp, some friendly advice: Just close this thread before you get flamed to hell. It looks like you learned your lesson at least, never baton with a folder.

In my opinion Hest has a serious design flaw, that will cause lock being damaged much faster than in different knives. Locking surface is very close to pivot, which gives HUGE leverage to every force applied to blade.

you baton with a 170$ folder and break it, then continue to say you will continue to baton with your 400$ folder, even though you know everyone, everywhere says that you should not baton with a folder? Do I have it right?
