There is absolutely no reason to baton with a folder. None.

Your folding knife is a tool to make other tools with.

Make a wedge...

Place wedge in notch..

Pound on your wedge to your hearts content...

Beating on a folder than complaining about blade play is ....

Use your head, or buy a fixed blade, or maybe even an axe.

Are you actually disappointed in using a FOLDING knife to baton wood ad it has blade play?! I would e excited that it would still function! Using a folder to baton is on the same level as usin a screwdriver to pry a door open. There are more able tools for the job. Sure, it may work, but you may also damage it. Before passing judgement on the knife, do yourself a favor and use it the way it was intended.

Or just hit it with an axe. I myself prefer my 40-ton log splitter. Nothing against the OP, I just don't get the whole batoning thing in general. Seems like a lot of work for little return. It doesn't seem like a skill that needs to be continuously practiced for the off chance one might find themselves in the situation where the skill is needed. As for using it as as test, it just proves that an expensive knife can do the same job as a $25 hatchet (albeit a lot less efficiently). I can haul a load of gravel in the trunk of my car, but my old pickup works a lot better with a lot less grief.

There is some degree of skill and know how needed when batoning ... maybe RYP knew what he was doing

Yep, that is about right. Just like the disclaimers on TV shows, "Warning, do not try this at home...". I also agree that everyone does things different, some people use an axe, others a machete, others a big chopper; but there is still a fundamental right and wrong way to do things behind the individual preferences. I wonder if the dealer will be willing to eat the cost of the knife that was broken through intentional misuse.

It looks like built strong, and average customer can be mistaken, that it is a strong folder. If this extreior do not lie to us, it should survive abuse like batoning off the price. General rule: do not use folders to batoning. But! HEST folders built to last according to their marketing niche and I think they MUST treat batoning like piece'o'cake.

For what else such monumental folder can be used ? Dunno. It can't cut like years known cutters: buck 110, spyderco military, benchmade 710, etc, coz HEST/F screams: I'm an axe and prybar in one, and a knife little bit!

I'm personally with TS.

I have batoned with Reeves and Benchmades since I was 15. I can tell you this knife was going to have the same problem even if I babied it. The lock is cut wrong. The amount of force it took to split the 2x4' s was negligible. If the blade was longer I could have batoned the pieces by using my other hand not a 2x4.

you baton with a 170$ folder and break it, then continue to say you will continue to baton with your 400$ folder, even though you know everyone, everywhere says that you should not baton with a folder? Do I have it right?
half right, as a Crk dealer I pay less:)

This is an example of when parents are not proud of their kid. They know something is not right with Jonny.
I eagerly await an answer sir.flame me all day long, but my parents? It's a knife sir. Can't take them with us.

Can you show a picture or two of the lock up bro? Still curious about it.

There has been a ton of "I broke _____ knife" threads/posts with mysteriously no pictures.

Hell even most 12 year old's now have cell phones with a camera or some cheap point and shoot.

I'm with a lot of other people who think that batoning with a folder is just about the worst thing you can do. A good folder shouldn't break under that stress, but you surely will get some more noticeable blade play. I wouldn't make a habit of that and I'm not surprised about your problems with the knife after batoning with it. Get a strong fixed blade if you want to baton with a knife... or an axe!

One question ,if I may ask. These Benchmades and Chris Reeves you baton with, also through pine 2X4's? Or actual rounds?

I ask only because since I do not hike/camp in lumber yards ,what is the purpose?

If actual rounds, I'd love to see pics/vids.

I can take a pic but you can't see anything wrong with it.if I engage the rotoblock, it has no bladeplay.I honestly think they didn't bend the Lock bar over far enough when making the knife

both and I can put a video on YouTube in a couple days. Working right now

I was making kindling out of a 2x4 at my house. There was magazine a while back showing a Guy batoning a sebenza through a small tree to make a shelter.
