DPX HEST Folder

I believe you're correct and that was on an LE model. As far as I know about the only issue with the regular production version has been with Horn Dog's.

Pretty sure just about every post I've read/seen regarding a regular model has been favorable but some are going to overlook that to promote their own agenda which is why as I've posted before, I hope potential buyers give more weight to the posts by members that actually own the knife in question rather than those that are simply intent on stirring the pot.

And I also believe those favorable posts about the HEST Folder. Mine is obviosly not typical. I will have another HEST soon, and will post a complete review in another thread.

My HEST/F production model got here today. I put some Super Lube on the detent and Roto Lock.... adjusted he pivot and it is as smooth as glass.

The Fit & Finish is excellent also.

No complains what so ever........ ;)

That's certainly encouraging.

Thumb studs are the trickiest of one hand opening mechanisms IMO. The most common error is people dont make them proud enough or give em enough traction. Me I like spine mounted discs a la Emerson and the aforementioned Spyder hole.

On this subject, i almost never use thumb studs as such. At least not for quick openings.

I flick my knives open with the middle finger of my hand on the side of the knife that's away from me.

I think it's a matter of angles, the way a lot of knives are designed you don't push the stud away from the handle, you put it toward the end of the handle. That's not an easy direction to push with your thumb.

...Hmm that's not a very easy thing to describe in text...i think i know what my next youtube video is going to be about.

Wow, Jeff, thanks a lot. I appreciate the kind words. I would love to try out another one and review it while waiting for mine to be tuned or replaced.

Going out in today's mail USPS Priority.

Couldn't agree more. Forums are great to hear from customers, meet users and answer questions. A folding knife is inherently a product that will exhibit a "personality" for the user and I am always interested to see if the customers expectations match the designers intentions.

Meeting expectations of people who don't want or own your product is a questionable pursuit. Placating a tiny group of perpetually angry people who just want to hate on products, company or people is a negative sum game because do you really want to be liked by people like that?? :)))

Either way Horn Dog, my offer stands to take a look at your knife and get you a new one or fix it if it is outside our norms.

Really sorry to hear this, Horn Dog.
Amazing that this is the same company that did Molletta's folder project, the SR-1. I have 2 of those, and both are fantastic, flawless, and sharp as heck. The SR-1 is actually nicer than some custom folders I own.
Odd how the same company hit a home run with that folder, and is having so much difficulty with this HEST folder...

ETA: RYP says that he backs his product(s)... Maybe try sending it back for another?

It seems not everyone has been lucky as you. Several forums on the net shows problems with the lock. Did you try this test ?

I have no agenda, RYP. When others were cancelling their orders over some internet sqabble, I did not. I wanted a HEST folder then and I want one now.

If the knife is good it will speak for itself... regardless of biased reviews or not. only time will tell.

Mine shipped out to DPx yesterday. My thumb is healing nicely (it needed some time away from that mondo detent HEST). It should be ready for action by the time yours arrives. The weather is warm, the days are longer, and I have my own personal jungle to test it in. Thanks a bunch, Jeff!

I'd offer to give you a second opinion on your HEST HD but you've probably been swinging steel longer than I've been breathing. :D

I really like the looks of your folder and hope it works out. I'll be watching this thread closely because you tell it like it is (no BS) when you test out knives. Happy testing.:thumbup:

Obviously Lion Steel has problems with some locks, thus the reason for the RotoBlock. So far, the 5 production HEST folders I have handled have no problems. However, a few of the ESEE-3 folder prototypes had terrible locks with improper mating surfaces.

I think we sometimes take high quality folders for granted. I sure can't make one. There are lots of precision parts that have to go together just right for them to work smoothly. They are much more complex than some folks realize. And then when you go into mass production, all those parts have to be dupicated and machined consistently. It's almost like making a good revolver.

Horn Dog, last para comment was not directed to you. Top one was. We are going to get to the bottom of it and get it back to you. Thanks to Jeff for parting with one of his.

My other HEST/F LE Sterile showed up today. :D Everything is in order with it also.... Fit & Finish are great, opens smooth as butter, nice strong detent, all good.

Maybe I have just been lucky.... but none of mine have had any problems. I think this is a well made knife and would recommend it to anyone based on my experience. :)

I have three, 2 LE's and 1 production. My buddy has 2 LE's. That is a total of 5 that I have handled personally..... all 5 were good to go from the jump.

I plan to give a much more detailed response in the near future, but I got the HEST/F on Friday and have had it on my person non-stop so wanted to chime in with some first impressions.

To say I'm thrilled would be an understatement. Sizeable enough to be more than effective, but discreet enough when clipped to the inside of a pocket not to be noticed. Opens smooth as can be, and I also did the lock-up test (someone previously had posted the YouTube video banging the folder on a block of wood to see if it would fail). I had absolutely no issue with the blade lock-up giving way at all, and was sturdy as could be. Solid, solid knife...and well worth the wait. Fit & finish are perfect on my production HEST/F. Man, these things were hard to get but now I know why!

Very pleased with the product that RYP and LionSteel have produced.

wow, that sucks. i just tapped mine, and the lock fails about 80% of the time.

i'm not happy.

and i use the sole of my boot, not even a hard surface.

I tried that "test" on all 3 of my HEST/F's too, and neither had any "problem" at all. I could beat them till the cows came home and mine would all still be locked up solid as can be. ... :)
