Dual Survival - Cauterization

Blackpowder is some serious stuff. The hot gas that comes off from it burning is enough to melt the skin on your face. I've seen it happen and it isn't pretty. I'd use a hot stick or piece of metal before the powder trick.

PLEASE DO NOT PLAY WITH BLACK POWDER!

;)

I don't know, when i think of cauterizeing a wound I think of civil war hospital and the need to stop bleeding fast and the witchdoctor like surgery that went on

Keep in mind I do not agree with the show and realize it's ridiculous I'm just pointing the fact that this practice got started somewhere and had o have worked once and a while for whatever reason it may be

After reading all the comments, I'm still shaking my head in disbelief at someone lacerating themselves for entertainment. If this is for real ... no amount of ink is going to remove the memory.
This reminds me of another aspect of survival, psychology ... perhaps the long term injury that is hard to train for ... this guy needs help.

"If this is for real"

It isn't. The cut and treatment might be but it is doubtful that either Cody or Dave would have used this treatment in a real survival situation. One of the main concerns expressed on this thread is that many of the viewers of this situation (on the TV program) might not know that. If it hasn't aired yet it might be cut by the producers. The potential liability of someone being injured and attempting this treatment based upon the supposed survival expertise of Dave and Cody is huge.

Woods Walker,

That sounds like one hell of a challenge. Far too many deer ticks here in the state that gave the disease its name. Good thinking.

I really hope you don't mind, but IMO what you have said is worth repeating :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

.... Heres an idea. Unglue your ass from your recliner and get out for some skill practice and real instruction from real guys that dont have to pad their resume. Can't get out? Pick up a book and read it, or practice real skills at home. Take those 200 dollar knives and get em dirty.
It really doesn't take long to sort out what is valuable & what is Bullsh!t from either the internet or TV. All it requires is to put aside the supposed reputation of the source & actually get outdoors & put it into practice

BTW, can anyone remind me of that often repeated comment about opinions and a$$holes?

Kind regards
Mick :D

Southerncross you are correct and you have a ton of opinions .... :D

I'd say the crew gave Dave a few locals of some good stuff after that cut and burn.

I've had a few cuts ... and a few burns. Dave's ... if real had to have hurt like a mo'fo.

Your right that I'm not shy about expressing an opinion :D

But then again, I really don't express an opinion on the internet unless I can back any of them with verifiable first hand experience :p

Kind regards
Mick

dear lord.

the S would have hit the F in a HUGE way and i'd have to be WAAAAAAAAAY out in the sticks (WITHOUT my FAK or any kind of bandage material) and in a seriously, seriously bad way to even consider cauterising.

and i'd stick a knife blade in a fire before contemplating playing sillybuggers with black powder.

Is Cody the one who runs barefoot in the woods? That is probably as dumb as cauterizing the wound with blackpowder.

I don't see how. I grew up running around the family farm and shoes were less than optional. In fact, I occasionally go barefoot when hiking some terrain. It has yet to yield any grievous injury or infection and actually cuts down on my blisters. Admittedly, it ain't for everyone.

Burning a wound closed and using a plant such as aloe to treat the cauterized scar is much better than walking around lost in the wilderness with a gaping open wound. Assuming you have no needle and thread..

This is true.

This show was stupid from the get go. Dave is a complete moron. All this does is add to my already dirt low opinion of him. I thought more of Cody but it appears his principals can be bought with Discovery money.

Everyone made it clear from the beginning it was just a show, but you're right. I would expect more out of Cody, especially after reading his book.

I love how guys are sayin, it beats anything else on TV.

This is kinda true haha.

Whatever. Heres an idea. Unglue your ass from your recliner and get out for some skill practice and real instruction from real guys that dont have to pad their resume. Cant get out? Pick up a book and read it, or practice real skills at home.

This is what it's all about. I am hoping to put some time in tomorrow.

Take those 200 dollar knives and get em dirty.

Got any $200 knives I can use? :D

Those vids are stunts, designed to capture attention, and hold it through the next commercial. Then, they do it again.

DING! DING! DING! We have a winner!

I don't get it. Dave cut himself on purpose for no reason? Or was he trying to fix some problem?

Pesky appendage. It's just excess baggage, after all. :D

After watching several of their adventures I put the pair on the same level as our clown Bear Grylls who makes me laugh ... After seeing this stunt I have no desire to follow them now.
They failed to encourage me in any way, just invoked disgrace.

Bear, its ok mate ... I'll still laugh at you drinking your own wee and gagging on rotten meat just dont intentionally injure yourself ;) nice to see him in Oz

Woods Walker,

Yea the ticks are nasty in CT but don't cut that snake thing short. I know a few spots in the state that would offer Dave a good chance to cut his body open again and suck out the venom. He could sterilize the wound with whiskey. I seen that in a move once so its gotta work.:D

I will even script it for Discovery. Dave can sit on a log pretending not to notice any danger. Guessing this would force the critter to bite as they tend to shy away from people.

On a side note I will keep watching as it is entertaining. I hope Dave was paid well for the self mutilation.

I'll add my $.02 to this dead horse, 2 quick things:

No one has discussed black powder vs pyrodex vs smokeless powder in this application. I cannot buy real BP within 70 miles of my house. I do not know any muzzleloader guys who bother with it any more. I would not try this with a load of Blue Dot or other fast smokeless powder.

#2 - the only problem I have is that Dave has always marketed himself as 'the common man' - common man kits, common man book, common man shelter, etc. This is a stunt done for ratings, period. That affects credibility, which makes me have no choice but to question his endorsements, opinions, etc. We now know Dave can be bought.

For the record, I can be bought. For that matter, I have had a lot of jobs paying under $50k a year that I hated. So would I sell out on TV for $5mil - sure would, the value to my family is greater than the detriment to my reputation. 10,000 acre homestead paid in full will make me feel a lot better.

If the documentary was 2-3 decades ago, you'd absolutely be mistaken about them using an ESEE, as that company name has only been around a couple of years, and the R.A.T. group it came from started in the mid to late 90's. Probably just looked like something they'd make. :)

See below.

In the movie Two Mules for Sister Sara with Clint Eastwood he get shot with an arrow. He carves a groove in the arrow shaft and fills it with powder and when he lights it Sister Sara (Shirley McLaine)pulls the arrow thru and catuerizes the wound.I would guess that back in the day before people carried needle and thread this was done with gun powder to seal a wound in the wilderness.

Already been covered, bubba, see post #25.

:)

I have just lost the last bit of respect i had for dave. I am a medical professional so i have a different take on this. I dont even know where to begin on this topic and it would be pages long by the time i was finished. I know some people would quote that this has been done in the past in recorded history however just because it has been done before doesnt mean it is a good idea. I agree that their are too many pansy asses out there now adays and many people need to learn to " embrace the suck" however this is not how to do it. Sure this might fix the bleeding problem but that is easier to fix in the backcountry than the infection you can end up in a burn.

IMO they are all jokes, including the one who is universally hailed on internet forums as "the real deal" :thumbdn:

I am truly at a loss to understand how anyone who can't even feed themselves (i.e the one known as the "starving man") can be hailed as the "real deal".

I really think more people should be spending more time outdoors rather than living their lives through the various "broadcast personalities" that are so often discussed :thumbdn::thumbdn::thumbdn:

Kind regards
Mick :p

So Mick - other than yourself are there any so called "survival experts" that you would consider to be the "real deal" ?

Les Stroud has extensive knowledge and experience in both survival and primitive living skills - there is no denying that fact.

I started watching Malcolm Douglas on tele and he, along with the Leyland brothers and Les Hiddins inspired me to travel around Australia ... which I did a few times eating bush tukka and using bush medicine along the way ... and looking forward to doing it many more times along with overseas.
The greedy yahoo's makin a mockery out of the experience need to be recognised as they are.
The only real deal's out there are the ones ya dont see on the box ... we respect them as they respect our land ;)
