Dumped in the Woods--What Knife--What Gun?

It took me 4 full days to travel 11 miles in Nova Scotia from one camp to another camp i frequent, and i knew where i was going, through woods, across streams etc,I wouldn;t underestimate the rockies ,its not gonna be easy by no means.People without experience will be the first to dismiss the reality of whats gonna take place .

Easy........12ga pump/ 119. 2 slugs/ 8 shot. When I get to lake would shoot a red squirrel and put out guts in open and when two canadian jays (whiskey jacks) come down to grab some gut would blast two in one shot.

300

Give me choice of two sharp tools, I would have to choose between 112 and folding saw or 112 and good short axe.

I'd go with the knife. I really think that wilderness deadfalls would provide plenty of wood for the small fires needed for cooking..........jaybirds.

:)

Gun: 12 gauge pump with 2 slugs and 8 number 8 shells.
knife: probably my fancy 154cm diamond wood build out 110

Did anybody mention smokes? 20 days with no smokes?!?!?

Ok.......You can have three cigarettes a day......but you have to give up two cans of beans.

:D

My dog doesn't eat much, and would provide an alarm for anything that has big teeth and wants to eat me. In addition he will distract anything for a few seconds, while I run like heck. If he gets eat'en well, better him than me. If he stays alive great a walking meal if needed.

I'm going to miss my dog...

I don't see why you couldn't choose a 106 axe as your knife.......I never thought of cleaning fish with a light axe like that.....but I can see that it might work just fine with a good sharp axe.

I'm amazed at all the interesting ideas that are being posted.

I've cleaned fish with my Gransfors hatchet before, it's ok for chopping the head and tail and opening the belly but if you were trying to fillet a pike or walleye you'd have a tough time of it.

Man's best friend.....for many reasons.

Maybe the problem with an axe is that it has to be really, really sharp for these special uses.....and if you use it for much chopping it will not stay real sharp, I would think.

Yeah, and if you don't fillet......you gotta scale walleye or N. Pike or panfish. Maybe an axe would be a pretty good scaler, though.

If I could only have one knife I'd want something a little substantial than your typical knife I would more than likely go with a Buck Hoodlum it's a very long yet thin knife that in a pinch could do some more delicate task as for a gun I would probably just take my Ruger Single-Six with 9.5 inch Barrel it fills a nice niche between pistol and rifle and with the spare 22 magnum cylinder you could expand your options as far a wild game goes.

For a gun, I would try to borrow "Mons Meg" from Edinburgh Castle. It's a 20" caliber that fires a 400 pound ball. That ought to be enough. If Mons Meg isn't available, I would settle for a single or double 20 with 6 - 7 1/2 shot. Even better, I'd like to trade the gun for a combo fly-spinning rod with some flies and lures. For a knife, either a 110 or a 102 would be fine.

It would be interesting to know where everyone who posts on this thread lives.

this one is simple and thanks for the cash in advance :p

All my spare time is spent making, setting and checking these fig8-21.gif

tending the fire, building a nice bush bunk and toting around a Mossberg 590A1 with 3"mags consisting of 2 slugs, 4 000 Buck, 4 #8 Shot.

The knife is a Buck Hoodlum, because it replaced all the sharpened prybars I had.

I would take my Buck 301 and my Remingtion 870 with 5 slugs and 5 # 4's.

Hmmmmm.......I sure would like to see someone actually try a Hoodlum in this scenario. Many "delicate tasks" come to mind and I can't see myself making it work. Maybe it could.....I don't know. I guess it's advertised as the knife that can do anything.

However, the choice of the Ruger Single-Six is one of the very best choices for this scenario, in my most humble opinion (as long as you are a damned good shot with it). Handy, with an easy-carrying shoulder holster, lightweight with lightweight ammo (remember, we have a few (?) miles to travel over rugged terrain to get to that river and lake) and the .22 Magnum (Federal 50 grain FMJ) could make killing a deer a more realistic possibility if a good close-range opportunity happened to present.

Of course, I tend to see small game as a primary food source in this scenario, and others seem to intend to kill big game. Preserving the meat would be a problem. I suppose you could make some jerky, maybe it could work out ok.

Nice fish traps! The basket-type is just like the ones I used to make as a kid (with chicken-wire, not wood).

You could end up with a lot of fish!

That certainly could do it!!

I continue to be totally amazed at the range of knives chosen.......everything from tiny to huge.

 and a little bit

:D

The discontinued Buck Smatchet and a Steyr scout rifle in .308 Win. 165 gr. HPBT. The glass would be Leupold.
