Dumped in the Woods--What Knife--What Gun?

That's odd - Katadyn indicates that their .2/.3 micron filters and charcoal granules, as in the Hiker/Hiker Pro, makes water into drinking water - removing biologics and protozoa. I was looking for something simpler than boiling water - and non-chewy/grating water, too.

I, too, bought a Governor - in early June, when a new local enabler first stocked them. I spent moola earmarked for new shoes for my Jeep. It's still running on 'may-pops' - but I have a cool 'blaster' - with an accommodating palate. They will also launch .45 Schoffields and moonclipped .45 GAP - pretty utilitarian as to ammo choices. Just grab a handful of something ~.45 caliber. The .45 ACP/GAP rounds must be moonclipped - a potential problem, without a proper de-mooner. The .410 bird shot might come in handy - as would some .45 Colt wadcutters/semi-wadcutters. At <30 oz - and with an S&W/DeSantis leather holster available for it, one could do worse in the boonies. Still wondering about the Hiker Pro filter... I guess some Clorox might be a substitute for something - or, back to boiling.

As long as we all get it figured out BEFORE we drink the water......

:)

That's a pretty lightweight big boomer, Dave and Stainz.....and accurate. I wouldn't count on the .410 for much other than snakes at close range with birdshot, though.......I don't know, never had much faith in the .410--had too many grouse fly away wounded when I was a kid.

"20 yards would be fine, there was one time that a crazed ground hog was threatening my life and the 45 thankfully was enough gun for him, ended his assault with 1 shot!!!!!"

Jimmy Carter and the rabbit??

Lotta thoughts, lotta gun choices, lotta knife choices....must be why so many knives & guns are made:thumbup::D I'd have to go with the old Savage 24V in .30-.30 & 20 gauge w/ open sights, 4 rifle rounds, and 6-#6's. The Hoodlum should take care of any task presented.

I'm still amazed at the many different styles and sizes of knives chosen.

The Hoodlum has to be the winner here, with TWELVE votes.

The 110 in several variations was runner-up with SEVEN votes.

Easy combo for me...
Buck 119 that's always with me whenever I'm out in the rough, given to me by a friend who took it hitch-hiking cross-country and back, coupled with my Savage 340A (30-30), no scope, just a peep-sight. :D

I guess here, I would say a 110 and a Marlin bolt .22 mag. With only ten rounds of ammo, your wits and situational awareness is your best defense.

Bear country, eh? I'll take a rifled 12ga with two slugs, two '00' buck and 6x No.6 bird. As for the knife, I would go with a Hoodlum. I could always use it to cut my throat if I mis-fired on a charging Griz. ;)

Been pondering this for a few days. Think I'd say a Savage over under with a 30-30 and 20 gauge. 3 170 grain 30-30, 7 #6 shot. At first I was gonna say a Buck Woodsman, but I think I'd stick to a 110 maybe even the orange Bucklite I picked up recently on special. I pondered this and damn near ordered one of the $40 orangewood Woodsman 102's they have on special for $40.

My tactic would be to head for the stream and lake. My hope would be I could survive there fairly well on fish and occasional small game. If I got to a spot where I could hunker in for a few days I'd mostly gather dead wood and blowdowns, hence the smaller knife. Shotgun for food, 30-30 for defense the shotgun couldn't handle, or for larger game.

Great fun to think about this.

I wonder if I'll order that 102 after all.................

Buck 119 and 12 ga shotgun with 5 slugs and 5 00buck shots. As a strategy- improvise without doing anything unnecessary stupid, stay close to water, enjoy the vacation :)

I rethought my earlier answer. My locale - the SE USA (AL, GA, TN, FL) - is less harsh - but thick. Black bears and bobcats aren't really a problem - two legged threats are (It was noonshiners in my youth - druggies now!). I'd take my pocketable S&W 3" 60 Pro loaded with +P 158gr LSWCHP .38's - and five spares. A pocketed 110 has been a longtime mainstay in my past. My last 'Custom Shop' 110 - in S30V & blue Dymondwood - would do nicely. Both items in pockets - much more manageable - and available when needed.

I still want that water filter!

....you will be taken to a remote wilderness area in the Canadian Rockies and dumped.

And......I haven't done a precise tally lately, but the Hoodlum must still be well out in first place and the 110 (in various configurations) in second place.

That's a very nice looking little trail gun, Stainz. Probably quite appropriate to the scenario anyway, since one would be highly unlikely to use it on anything other than small game. The Griz are hunted in that part of Canada and are pretty wary of any humans anyhow.

I'm just a buzz-kill - trading the Canadian Rockies for the likes of Alabama's Talladega Forest or TN's Smokies. I was attempting to be realistic... in a fantasy! I'll go back to my original pair - a S&W 4" 629 and my 895. Oops - Canada only permits handguns of 4+ inches - have to take my 6" 629 - good grief!

Stainz

The six-inch 629 carries very well in a Cordura shoulder holster.

I carried mine on several deer hunts when I wanted to do more photography than hunting and I hardly knew it was there.

BTW......now that you mention it.......I don't think Canada allows handguns in at all, does it???

We may have to switch this scenario to Alaska!!

:)

Definitely a custom gossman with a 4 inch blade and a savage .22lr bolt action

Just a kill joy-but will be no handguns,Ak's ,Ar's, FnFal's bull pups or most anything black. Canada laws. (if Stallone or Arnold used it it prob is not allowed-gun control protects us all-NOT) Now for me a 119 as I don't have a Hoodlum. 12 ga Rem 870 w/ 3 slugs 2 buck & 5 #. Snairs and fish traps & smoked or jerkey from game. Living within the law would be hard.
