Here's another flag--ANY type of checkpoint in these latin countries are suspect, especially kidnapping countries like Mexico and Colombia. Best to avoid them altogether but have a plan to evade in your vehicle.

Also, Surburban is not necessarily the grayman's vehicle of choice.

RIP

MEXICO CITY – A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was killed and another wounded while driving through northern Mexico Tuesday, in a rare attack on American officials in this country which is fighting powerful drug cartels.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said one agent was critically wounded in the attack and died from his injuries. The second agent was shot in the arm and leg and remains in stable condition.
"I'm deeply saddened by the news that earlier today, two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents assigned to the ICE Attache office in Mexico City were shot in the line of duty while driving between Mexico City and Monterrey by unknown assailants," she said.
U.S. and Mexican officials said they were working closely together to investigate the shooting and find those responsible. The motive for the attack wasn't immediately known.
"Let me be clear: any act of violence against our ICE personnel — or any DHS personnel — is an attack against all those who serve our nation and put their lives at risk for our safety," Napolitano said. "We remain committed in our broader support for Mexico's efforts to combat violence within its borders."
The two agents were driving in the northern state of San Luis Potosi when they were stopped at what appeared to be a military checkpoint, said one Mexican official, who could not be named because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the case.
After they stopped, someone opened fire on them, the official said.
San Luis Potosi police said gunmen attacked two people a blue Suburban on Highway 57 between Mexico City and Monterrey, near the town of Santa Maria Del Rio, at about 2:30 p.m. Police said one person was killed and another was flown to a Mexico City hospital, though they couldn't confirm the victims were the ICE agents.
Mexican Ambassador to the U.S. Arturo Sarukhan spoke with ICE chief John Morton to express Mexico's condolences, according to a spokesman.
"This is a difficult time for ICE and especially for the families and loved ones of our agents. Our hearts and prayers go out to them. This tragedy is a stark reminder of the risks confronted and the sacrifices made by our men and women every day," Morton said in a statement.
Though Mexico is seeing record rates of violence from warring drug cartels and a crackdown on organized crime, it is rare for U.S. officials to be attacked. The U.S. government, however, has become increasingly concerned about the safety of its employees in Mexico amid the escalating violence.
In March, a U.S. employee of a consulate, her husband and a Mexican tied to the American consulate were killed when drug gang members fired on their cars as they left a children's party in Ciudad Juarez, the city across from El Paso, Texas.
The U.S. State Department has taken several measures over the past year to protect consulate employees and their families. It has at times authorized the departure of relatives of U.S. government employees in northern Mexican cities.
In July, it temporarily closed the consulate in Ciudad Juarez after receiving unspecified threats.
In a famous case, in 1985 U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena Salazar was tortured and killed in Mexico. Mexican trafficker Rafael Caro Quintero is serving a 40-year prison term for Camarena's slaying.
ICE, the investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the second largest investigative agency in the federal government, enforced immigration laws and is primarily responsible for arresting, detaining and deporting people who are in the U.S. illegally. It also investigates drug cases in the U.S. and Mexico and other types of trafficking.
It was created in 2003 through a merger of the investigative and interior enforcement elements of the U.S. Customs Service and the Immigration and Naturalization Service and has more than 20,000 employees in offices in all 50 states and 47 foreign countries.

I'd like to know what they were doing driving in that area.

This line cracked me up;

"We remain committed in our broader support for Mexico's efforts to combat violence within its borders."

How's that going for you Big Sis?

The violence is spilling over on past both borders, so it makes sense to have our agents there. Monterrey is very dangerous nowadays. I have pictures of when my Aunt and Uncle honeymooned there back in 1948.

Pray that the wounded agent heals up quick.

RIP

I suggest people should wiki "51st State" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/51st_state

According to it, there is a plan in place to absorb Mexico within 5 years once initiated. One Mexican state at at a time, thereby the US will have 82 states when it is all said and done.

I am all for such a plan. Mexico is strife with corruption and violence and has laws against US citizens that are patently unfair (i.e. non Mexican citizens cannot own land within 50 miles of the border or coast, which basically cuts me out of buying some inexpensive great beach front property!)

It's only going to get worse. When you are involved in someone else's business, sooner or later you're going to get your nose bloodied. The only thing people like that understand is violence...because they're violent. And if you are going to be involved in dealing with people like that, they're best dealt with the way Colombia, with the help of the U.S., dealt with Pablo Escobar. Kill every last one of them you can. Things like "arrest" and "being charged" and "indictment" and even "incarceration" is meaningless to them. The only thing they understand is being squashed like bugs and that is the only way to stop them, just be more violent than they are. That's what they respect, force. If you can be more ruthless than they are, they will respect you.

I don't see that happening.

I am all for such a plan. Mexico is strife with corruption and violence and does not treat US citizens as well as the US treats Mexican citizens. If Mexicans think the US is so great, and it is, instead of Mexicans coming here, we bring the US to them. . . . !

One can only dream. . .

I don't know what kind of illegal substances the people that dreamed that shit up have been ingesting, but it's mighty powerful.

It is never going to happen.

"Thank God," I might add.

100% Agree. Unfortunately most people are incapable of understanding the level of brutality in this type of situation. There is no compromise or negotiation possible. The only way to reach these people is to make them understand if they continue with their actions every single one of them will be hunted down and killed. I am not optimistic that our people or government have the conviction to do that.

It's not going to happen under any administration. I think we are seeing the long slide into permanent mediocrity. I love my country, but I just don't think things are going to change for the better. It's been going on for far too long. These people think they own us, and in a way, I guess they do.

Mind=Blown

I don't think that will solve anything. It never has in the past.

The only thing that will change Mexico are the Mexicans.

That's not going to happen as long as The United States of America is Mexico's unemployment program, healthcare program, retirement program and general welfare program all rolled into one. And we are, and nothing is going to change that. What's done is done.

Stranger things have happened...something has to give at some point.

I think having illegal aliens deport themselves is the most economical way. Make it uncomfortable for illegal aliens to live, work and do business here and they will leave. It will take a generation or two, but it could work.

The solution is there, but I will agree there is no one to impliment it.

Health care are begining to ask for the papers, that would be a start.
Especially with "Obamacare" in the works...

All of the children of illegal aliens will be able to vote. Well, all of them that don't commit a crime that would prohibit them from voting. Some of the kids at the beginning of the latest round of immigration-to-amnesty are approaching eighteen years of age. Around the year 2020 our country is going to change dramatically.

By the way, I'm gonna stuff it at this point. I don't want to hear all of the tired old "paranoid, xenophobic, racist bigot" nonsense. And it's certainly not political because both sides wanted it.

That does pose a challenge..but I can show you blueblood Americans who will vote who know (or don't care) nothing about who they are voting for...just that he got them riled up and spoke well..and had a catchy slogan.

It's not where they are from or how they got here, but their ability to reason and think ahead more than a day that is a problem. Not having an even cursory grasp of history is another stumbling block that the savvy politician can take advantage of.

One more paragraph and I'll be talking about the New World Order, so I'll slow it down:D

EDIT:
just saw your edit Don..I'm calling it quits on this for now also..

I did not mean to edit my post Don Rearic. . It was already quoted while I was editing it!

But seriously, I mean, I live in California. I have talked to people of Mexican heritage and they seriously do say and think that eventually, California, Arizona, New Mexico, etc will become Mexico because of all the illegals moving here.

A good defense is a good offense. Expand our borders. I am sure plans can be implemented to make it as safe and sane as possible. There are plenty of American expatriates there already. From what I understand, Mexico is where Colombia was 10 years ago, and now Colombia is now the most conservative country in South America.

Just a thought is all. I found the wikipedia article very enlightening.
