Earthquake!! M8.8 in Japan

I followed the story all night and the scenes are horrific! I'm glad to hear that you're okay. Hopefully Fujita is, too.

I lived in Hyogo-ken for a few years, which is very far from the epicenter, but they still felt it there. I've talked to a bunch of friends there and so far so good, no one hurt.

Everyone there is in our thoughts and prayers.

Prayers to Japan. Watching the devastation, I'm in shock. Living in southern California I know the fear and damage quakes cause.

My cousin's son teaches in Japan.

She has been unable to reach him by phone all day, as Ikuyadas predicted.

His brother in California got hold of him in under 20 minutes by text message: everything is OK with him, but said there is *so much* to do that he hasn't had time to even let his family know he's all right. So much devastation in his area (not sure where) that everyone needs urgent help.

You all have our support. Stay safe, be strong and you will get through it. Im in shock. I wish I was out there to help.

Hi, forumates.
I'm pretty ok so far, just came back to my house from the central Tokyo, stepping on several
public transports just starting to work.
I was giving lecture on mathematics at a certain IT company and it was
just the moment I was talking about the distribution of scale and frequency of the earthquake
and other natural phenomena obeying power-law probability distribution, when the biggest one hit.
I was in a fairly large building and could see several fire and smoke along the coast.

I spent a night to wait the trains start again and managed to come home back.

Those tsunamis are simply devastating and the most terrible thing is they had no time
to evacuate I think. I've also heard some nuclear powerplants are in dangerous condition.

Anyway, I'll take some rest now. Thank you very much for your concern and pray.

Me too glad yuji, I heard my relative walked 3.5 hours from Yokohama to Fujisawa.

Could sleep but wasn't deep, aftershocks remain and body was still tempered.
Appetite disappeared from that time but slowly awakening.
Took Hollywood shower after some delays.

Wow, I've heard tsunami from Japan reached California, with six feet of height..
Be safe to you all, too!
It is not just about Japan, a whole earth scale disaster.
Once spread, then it is concentrated again at the opposite side of the epicentre.
That said, I'm worried about South America, too.

Oops, just had another shake.

I've been trying to contact my friends and ex-wife out there, so far all are OK.

My American friend lives in Saitama prefecture with his wife and kids. He rang me this afternoon (GMT) and said he was worried about the nuclear power station. He said that he was considering bugging out, heading west over the mountains, rather than driving south...

I don't want to make light of any of this but I reckon this quote should be made into a survivalist t-shirt.

Strange to say but difficult to feel serious occasion.
No apocalypse around but still worthy.

I'm glad to hear our friends in Japan are safe. Thanks for checking in, and may your country recover quickly.

glad you guys and your families are safe! that tsunami hit parts of hawaii as well!!! nothing near as bad as over there. stay safe!

Thanks guys. My family members arrived at 05:30AM.
Now I could be safe at least about myself...

Glad to hear you guys are ok over there. from what I saw it was a rough scene in places.

Oh and Fujita, I'm glad you weren't on the train. There is a lot to be said for good kharma.

.

Good to hear our members who reported back are safe. The pictures and videos speak for themselves. Japan has among the best disaster preparedness and emergency response structures and resources in the world, but nobody can really be prepared for such things.

Take care - our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

P.S. Since Japan is a leader in helping other countries recover from natural disasters, the good karma will come back in spades, I guarantee it.

My Dad's friend lives in Ishinomaki.
I'm trying to get infos from web BBSs, blogs and others from yesterdey,
but direct information is very very limited and lots of outside relatives are praying and searching.
I couldn't browse on domestic public sites but found a private twitter from that place,
its far over my thoughts and clear situation was still hard to know.

I heard that his house was damaged from 10yrs ago earthquake and he reformed it,
and I could see his house from google street view.... that's bad feel at least.
Lifelines are stopped and forecast tells it might rain on Monday at there.
Only I could do was to register this and to make refuge place list.
