NOTE: ec9 seemed to have fallen out of contact with me because he moved, not because he decided to let me hang. I am currently back in communication with him and working this out. Looks like he's an honest man and wants to make this better.

Hello,
Got a problem here. I was contacted on August 8th by ec9 looking to trade my discontinued Spyderco Smallfly for his Ritter Griptilian and what he said was a M2 Benchmade Nimravus. I agreed to trade and we both shipped Priority Mail with tracking numbers. We both shipped on Aug 9th. The Smallfly arrived to him on Aug 11th. The package he sent to me was miss-routed and arrived to me on Aug 13th. There was no tape on the box (large flat rate Priority) and the flap had come undone, causing the Ritter Grip to fall out or be stolen! The adhesive on the flap was very tacky and I'm frankly surprised the Nimravus stayed in there at all.

I contacted ec9 immediately and confirmed that the box I received was the one he sent. He confirmed the handwriting was his. We agreed to hold onto all the knives involved in the trade in case we had to reverse it. For the next two months he claimed to have gone to the post office many times and talked to various people trying to get a refund. Communication was great until his last email on September 28th. I have emailed him 4 times since then and have not received a reply. He last logged onto Bladeforums on 10-21-2010 05:32 PM, so I know he didn't die...

And now for the good stuff:

I researched the "M2" Nimravus he sent me in this thread. Turns out it's most likely ATS-34...

On Aug 12th (one day after he received my Smallfly), ec9 sold a LNIB Spyderco Smallfly...

Please be aware if you deal with him. I have his real name, email, and address. Is there anything I can do that is worth my while?

The box with no tape whatsoever. Notice how easily I was able to open the flap the rest of the way.

Another shipper who didn't use insurance...sorry to hear about your misfortune. Perhaps posting his personal info would coax him into sending you a refund for the amount of the Ritter Grip. What's with all the exceptionally bad deals lately?

Another person to blacklist if this doesn't get resolved properly. Common sense says package a sharp object safely and securely in a parcel. Not only to do right by the buyer, but who wants the post office suing you if one of their employees gets hurt from knives coming out of the parcel unexpectedly.

I have been burned too many times. I think I'm done on the trade section for now on, and most likely the whole exchange. It's a bummer that it only takes a few bad grapes to spoil the barrel, but it's definitely spoiled for me. I am sick of being treated like this and no physical object is worth this kind of stress.

That is not looking good. However I do love the BM Nimravus. Let me know if you want to trade/sell.

Nothin personal nate, but I don't think the OP is ready to do another trade right about now..........

Insurance would not have helped. They don't pay for loss or damage caused by inadequate packaging.

I really don't understand how that box would be considered inadequate. If the USPS supplies a box for shipment, then it would certainly make sense to consider it adequate for shipping.

Gotta agree with SM,,putting tape on a box is entirely up to the shipper. As the box comes from the USPS, is adequate for shipping items in the eyes of the Postal service.

It kinda looks as if though the end was not properly sealed. Whenever I ship in a box I reinforce all the seams and corners with tape just to be on the safe side and to hopefully limit water damage w/o "mummifying" the thing.

While he is totally at fault for not taping it sufficiently, I wouldn't call this a scam.

I've had a successful transaction with him and he sold the knife I sold him within a week. It was not at a profit, iirc...I think he may have played with it for awhile and decided it wasn't for him.

They didn't design it for shipping a knife in.

Well if I learned anything from these posts is that make sure insurance, sturdy boxes, sufficient filling and tape is used on all parcels involved.

A Smallfly, Ritter Grip, and Nimravus were shipped in that box...2 folders and a fixed blade with a sheath (I hope to God I'm correct in assuming it had a sheath or some type of edge cover). Anyways, without exposed blades I would consider the knives to be benign much like any other type of merchandise one would ship in one of those boxes.

michaelmcgo, has anything happened since yesterday? Still no contact?

Always cover your butt unless you can afford not to. Don't want to end up with a SNAFU...

You would fail to collect on an insurance claim. There's no point in arguing with me about it; I'm not the one you would have to convince.

Or you could read Sticky: *** How Should You Package Knives for Shipping? and learn how to ship knives so they don't get lost in the mail.

I've never made a trade here, and it's stories like this that long ago convinced me that I never will. Yeah I know there are 100s of flawless trades that we never hear about but it's just not worth the hassle to me at least.

To slightly correct your first statement: I shipped ec9 a Spyderco Smallfly (arrived to him perfectly). ec9 Shipped me a "M2 Nimravus" and Benchmade Ritter Grip. The Nimravus turned out to be the lesser valued ATS-34 Nimravus which arrived just fine and the Benchmade Ritter Grip never arrived at all.

To answer your second question: He still has not made contact with me...

You absolutely must use packing tape on the USPS boxes. I've even has Postal employees tell me they've seen the boxes pop open without it.

As long as a Priority box has no tape around it, I can lift that flap easily, and reset it almost as securely as it had been. All these little things are so easy to do right: pack thoroughly around the item/s, tape an address to each item inside the box, tape around the box both ways. A few extra minutes secures the contents against slipping out and against theft as well, to a great extent. Once this is done properly, insurance will be more successfully pursued in case of loss.

But in any event, there is no excuse for one party to a dispute to absent himself from the discussion.
