Good idea, but it kills the chances for a guy thats just starting up (or re-starting) and has no completed current work to show. Someone like that may set the piece of steel aside looking at it every day while he grinds away on less expensive stock learning to perfect his work. Possibly even, this person would further "stimulate" the knifemaking economy even more than a veteran by buying tools and supplies he didnt know he needed until he started to really get dirty. In this case having such a piece of damascus on hand to eventually work with could be sort of a goal to set, and fuel the desire to make knives even more.I think if your number is drawn you should have to send a pic of a knife YOU have made to prove you're not just jumping on a bandwagon because it's free.

Ok, somehow I missed that part of the post. I swear I read the whole thing. Anyway, I'd like to withdraw my name from the hat. I don't want to attempt something with such a nice piece of steel until I learn what I'm doing. Whoever has post #101 can take my spot.but the thread starter stated the billet must be used in the very next knife to be built.
Well, now that there's been 100 replies to Dan's thread... I just wanna say I think it's an awesome thing to do.
At the same time though, after reading some of the posts, I get the notion there's people who haven't even made/don't make knives that entered... and that seems shady to me... like the people who's ONLY posts have been the ones to enter giveaways. I see these giveaways as a guy's way of giving back to the knife community, and think the stuff should go to folks who appreciate it.
Just hope nobody takes advantage of Dan's very generous offer.![]()

Erik,Just for the record, as long as you're going to make a blade with it, I don't have an issue. However, if you've never made a knife, don't have the means or intent to do so, then this giveaway would be a waste for you.
Erik,
I wasnt calling your reasoning into question so much as offering a different perspective. I agree that taking advantage of a generous give away such as this with no means of completing a blade would be at the least a selfish thing to do. And Lord help the person that would seek to take the steel and then sell it!
