EDC and Personal defence folding knife.

Pretty sure the rust proof blade thing was because Brazil is a tropical country, with humidity. This could, you know, lead to rust. Not that I have personal experience with knives in the tropics. But I did hear about this one guy, who said that he had carried a knife in the tropics and it rusted. Of course you can't always believe what you read on the internet, I know.

A rusty knife is good for SD. It'll probably give tetanus if you can cut your attacker more than an inch deep. :D

Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter. Best production folder I've owned and used in quite sometime. Inexpensive and superbly made with excellent steel. keepem sharp

There are Kershaw's collaborations with Emerson that are fairly decent, although max out about 3.25". My personal preference would be, as said earlier, the Cold Steel Rajah III, a stick sharpener like a Lansky Turnbox takes care of the recurve, and the AUS8 version is being sold out as retailers preare for the new BD1 version. Failing that a large (4") Voyager in clip point is a fine utility tool.

Training to use a knife isn't so much about learning to cut someone, but learning to avoid the inevitable retaliation. As Marc MacYoung wryly observes, "I cut you 31 times, you only cut me 25, I win," is not the approach you want to take.

If you wanted to ignore the law, an XL Voyager Vaquero plain edge is a decent weapon (as knives go) and is very cheap at the moment for the same reason as the Rajah III.

This is not a thread about whether a folding knife is good for self defense. Whether a knife is a good tool for self defense is not an answer to the question, so keep that for your own thread and don't hijack this one. Of course I would prefer a 26" baton (or an X26 taser for that matter) over a folding knife with a 4" blade for self defense. But the knife has way more utility and use in every day life and is way better to EDC and conceal, especially in over 90°F/33°C tropical Brazilian temperatures. The OP asked for a folding knife recommendation, so recommend a folding knife or don't recommend anything at all.

I will second the alfresco endura ffg, or if you want to open quickly you could get the waved version

Byrd cara cara in g10 (got mine for 40) excellent utility and capable if u put it in self defence role i have much nicer knives including spyderco endura and i can say that g10 cara cara is functionally speaking it is just as good and in some ways better it has a choil
that the endura doesn't.... dont let people talk you out of 8cr13 it is very functional takes good edge easy to sharpen dulls but so does everything else it keeps an edge sufficiently generally speaking my guess is that the people on this forum who rage against 8cr13 haven't had much experience with it....

If I go for full self defence, this seems to be the most logical option:
http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-6034T-Emerson-Designed-CQC-7K/dp/B00I0RQ0AO

But isn't this frame lock going to be uncomfortable for all other uses I have for this knife?

No a frame lock isn't going to be uncomfortable for all other uses at all. But the 8Cr13MoV on the Kershaw will be blunt after every cardboard box.

And if you want to "go for full self defence" I would get something a lot larger than that little Kershaw, like a Cold Steel Rajah II (or III) which is also waveable.

Since Cold Steel is coming out with new versions with better steels a lot of the old ones (with AUS 8A) will probably be offered on the exchange for cheap.

Between the Talwar and the Buck I posted last, which one would you choose?

Remember, I can go as big as 10cm here, 4" is actually 1.6mm bigger. Even with the Talwar police could bother me. (Actually there is no law for 10cm here, it was taken down in 1941, but police officers just confiscate it, and the judges here suck so they keep it.)

Get whatever defense blade matches your training style. And consider the legal view of carrying a knife with "intent."

If you're not trained, id go with a stick. Takes a lot of training to actually stop an attacker, not just piss them off more and get yourself killed while they bleed out.

For EDC, excellent suggestions have been given.

Talwar obviously.

With apologies for all the prejudices, but considering your English I guess you're not looking like you're from the favelas and I guess the police won't "bother" you (as in frisk you) quickly for no reason i.e. if you don't act like an idiot. When in Brazil I always EDC my Military and my S&W HRT Badge knife or my Cold Steel Rajah II. Just like here in Holland. And I didn't stop EDC'ing them when two or three years ago every municipality passed local laws that forbids carrying "any sharp object on your person"...

The guy in your video didn't follow the 10 CM rule... Instead of knife SD, train running fast.

The guy came at the ipod wearer with his knife concealed. No way you could deploy anything in that situation. The ipod kid was dumb. First for getting himself into the situation and second for not giving up the ipod fast.

Even the old lady saw that something was up and moved.

Sny custom knife makers in Brasil? Maybe buy something local to save on the dollar conversion?

I am a student at PUC-MG man. There's a lot of people with drugs here, eventually police do frisks to look for potheads and they could end up getting my knife. I've been here for 2.5 years though, and me neither my friends were ever frisked.

I am still analyzing various knives, but the Talwar is my favorite right now. The steel of the Buck seems to be much better though. How does S30V compare to AUS 8A? I think the Buck is cooler too, but the wave of the Talwar makes me choose it.

I'm really liking this Talwar:

Is there any disadvantage to it?

No, personal preference

Only the one thing which is common to all lockback knives, watch out for dirt or lint getting stuck in here:

S30V holds an edge longer. Talwar also comes in CTS XHP but that is $100.

Buck's S30V is 59.5-60 HRC, and from Ankerson's tests:

Category 4

ZDP-189 (65)
CPM-154 (62)
ELMAX (60)
CTS-XHP (Military) (60+)
Super Blue (61.5)
CPM 3V (Big Chris)

Category 5

S30V (60)
VG-1
CPM - D2 (62)
N690
ATS-34 (59)
CPM-S35VN (59)
N680
ELMAX (58.5) Mule
D2 - Dozier K2

Category 7

VG-10
S30V (58.5)
AUS-8A
SG-2
5160 (55)
13C26N
X-15
440C (Big Chris)

...with a coarse edge, 400 grit congress Silicone carbide, more optimal edge finish for max edge retention to highlight the differences in the steels.

Steel - # of cuts - Model - HRC Hardness - Geometry Measurement

S30V - 300 - Military - 60 RC
CTS-XHP - 240 - Military - 60.5 RC
AUS-8A - 160 - Recon 1

I have just read that Aus 8A also rusts more easily. And as Goosey said, S30V maintains the edge longer. Wow that's hard to choose. Talwar wave function VS Buck's better steel. Since I am not going to do things like Camping, I still like the Talwar more. But man, that Buck is awesome.

Just don't expect Joe Felon standing there at 6' 2", 250 pounds of fresh out of prison muscle to stand there and let you wave your 3" bladed folder at him like a spider monkey, while he leans on his aluminum baseball bat.

So, you have a bunch of bodybuilding felons armed with baseball bats roaming the streets where you live?
Remind me not to move wherever you're from! :D

Ok guys, I think I'll order it tomorrow. I think I'll get the talwar. But looking at that buck and knowing I won't have it kind of hurts.

What do you guys think of my final decision, the Talwar?

I own it, it's a good knife... I was going to say that it's a good little knife, but that's the result of owning so many of Cold Steel's megafolders that a 4" knife feels small. I also have the Buck Vantage Pro, and it's also a good knife, but it doesn't feel as strong as the Talwar.
