EDC... But why??

So, you just spent $400 on a Sebenza (or whatever price on whatever new knife you "needed" for your collection). But why did you get it? I think it's clear that the only reason anybody collects large amounts of knives is for fun. Heck, I know that's what it is for me. Sure, I have a nostalgic fondness for knives from growing up camping and fishing with my dad, but neither I nor anybody NEEDS more than one or two good EDC blades. And for that matter, having an EDC knife at all is often just because you need something with which to occupy your hands throughout the day. Let's face it, very few people end up using their EDC's for anything but opening wrappers and packages and maybe cutting the occasional piece of fruit. I would say that about .001% of the time your EDC blade might be used for tactical purposes. Which makes you wonder, how many people buy expensive tactical blades by Emerson, Strider, etc., and end up EDCing them and never using them for their intended purposes. But of course that doesn't mean it's silly to carry a blade, a good EDC can always have random uitility purpose. And I would say it's acceptable and totally normal to collect lots of knives simply for the appreciation a fine craftsmanship and the coolness factor of them, I know that's why I do it.

But just for kicks, respond to this thread with the #1 reason you carry a knife, the #1 reason you collect knives and the name and/or a picture of your current EDC blade!

I'll get us started:

I'm currently carrying a Boker pipsqueak. And like Most people, my primary uses for it are opening random things, fiddling around with it throughout the day, and of course for that extremely rare just-in-case emergency purpose. I collect because I think a fine knife is a thing of beauty :) I don't currently have any pictures of it available but I believe most of you know what it looks like.

Now it's your turn, aaaand GO!

The reason I carry a knife is because it is the most useful and easiest to carry tool. I have a different knife for different uses, I don't consider it collecting because I use them all. I currently carry a Spyderco sage 1 as my edc, but will be replaced on Tuesday by this guy....hindererxm183-intifolder-02.jpg

I have carried a knife everyday for the past 10 years and I honestly have used a knife everyday of every month of every year of that decade, right now I carry a leatherman charge ti very handy knife

I have carried a knife everyday for 45 years, ever since I was given one by my grandparents at Christmas 1967. To not carry one is like not wearing pants. In fact it is a very rare occasion that I carry less than 3 knives. I have a list of about 20 that I may be carrying at any time: I always have either a Case back pocket or a Bark River City Knife in my back pocket with my credit cards, usually a small fixed blade in my front pocket(usually a Rat3 or else a David Farmer) and either a Buck folder or a Schrade Sharpfinger on my belt.

I wouldn't call my small accumulation a collection.
Why do I have so many? Because I like to carry two knives at a time and they must be differently sized.
I have a knife for just about any use I could need one for.
The reason I carry one is because it's handy to have on me and I find things daily that having a knife on me makes a simple task of.
My current EDC?
The last few days it's been my Strider SNG Z-Wear and Galyean Pro Series Small JYD.

I carry a knife because i think that people who open clam packs with their teeth is rather cave man'ish for someone who lives in a '"civilized" society. Apparently its becoming rather "hip" to do so because most people refuse my knife in favor of their teeth or a dull key in order to open packages (maybe its a personal thing, like a challenge they take on in order to "better" themselves or feel good about the fact that they were bad*** enough to chew through the package that was designed to keep them out)

I collect knives because i like sharp objects. I cant really explain it better than that.

EDC doesn't really describe what a lot of people do even though it's an easy, popular term. Today I carried my Vaquero Voyager and a little Schrade slipjoint. The Voyager for emergency or big cuts and the slippie for whatever needed cut while out shopping with the wife and kids.

I am currently carrying a Boker Mini Pry Mate. I have been carrying a knife for as long as I can remember. I only recently switched over from folder to fixed blade though. It was easy to switch when I found the perfectly sized Boker MPM to sit in my pocket. I too have used my knife every day. Even if I do not use it much, I do admire it every day. I have carried and used anything from a $20 SAK to a $1000+ CRK. Nothing too much over that though.

I guess you could say that I find knives to be the most important tool that I always must have on me and they are the most perfect jewelry that I could ever desire (followed closely by my watches).

Here is the Boker MPM:

I would say that the same thing could be said of a Glock. The odds of you needing it for it's intended purpose are remote, but it is still a nice thing to have at the ready. I EDC an Emerson CQC 7V and have found it to be an excellent all-around knife. To me, knives are functional works of art that get used for a multitude of tasks.

1) The #1 reason I carry a knife is primarily for the same reason I carry a small flashlight..."just in case I need one". As you've said, most days it simply opens a package or cuts a piece of fruit, but I like knowing it's there just in case.

2) I don't collect knives, but I have acquired quite a few through the years. Mostly out of nostalgia and boredom (or temptation from reading toomuch of the forums) with a current blade.

3) My current EDC is a Victorinox SAK and a Spyderco Persistence.

So to summarize my answers more directly, "yes, I agree with your comments above" :-)

My 'always carry' is an eight year old Vic Classic that has gained many nicks and dings, a scissor spring replacement, and a blade that is a quarter the way gone from sharpening. It is my most used knife, and gets pressed into service for screw driver, scraper, and cutting duties. I carry it because it conveniently weighs next to nothing, has n bulk to speak of, and offends no one. I will usually pair it with something: an Opinel No. 8, a Benchmade Mini Grip, a GEC Pemberton, Case Trapper, Kershaw Leek...you get the idea. I use the dedicated folders less than I do the Classic, but I like having them none the less.

Majority of all my cutting needs (99.9%) can be done with the smallest SAK. I EDC'ed larger knives because their are fun. Also for the .01% of the time my life might depend on it.

Same here,,For a while, My edc has been PM2 right front pocket and SF E1B left front pocket bezel down withpocket clip attached to pants pocket just like a knife,,also has E2d TC with short lanyard

Good ? I carry a knife because I like to cut things, in an efficient manner. I also have a need to cut things, pert much, ever day.

Carried folders since I was 7, in the scouts. Starting stepping my game up to full tang fixed blades only in the last year, after having a china-mart 1/2 tang kitchen knife break on me .
Main edc is a Becker BK11 on my neck that I convexed. Main woods/weekend knife is a Bark River Aurora. Perfect size, great ergos for me.

Plus, I also always carry a Leatherman Wave, cause that darn thing is useful! Especially for fishing, don't have to carry a seperate kit, and its great at work, when I don't want to walk to my tool box for a pair of pliers.

I carry different ones when I am in the woods, etc., and when i score the right leatherman, it will probably be an edc. But, my Manix original is with me all the time. Uses? cutting steak and such, cleaning a wild turkey, opening packages and such, making lunch (slicing onions, salmon, cutting and spreading cream cheese), etc. I never want to be in or see another knife fight, and I prefer my 686 or 1911, or better yet, .308 M1 or 870, for serious interaction, or even better yet, runnning away. However, I have drawn the manix once, a few months ago, in a tense scenario, and all went well therein. I guess one could cut a bit with it, though, again, would rather not.cwd

What exactly is the intended purpose of a tactical knife? Self defense?

A few points;

What percentage of people who carry a gun every day actually shoot someone? Having said that some feel if you're going to carry a knife, carry one that you can use for any situation.

Also, IMO "Tactical" is more a style of knife than an actual "purpose" of said knife. It's what appeals to some. (Me)

If I'm going somewhere that might be sketchy I definitely want a "Tactical" style knife. As in a full size Tanto bladed Barrage. But that's me.

I carry 2 knives, one big and one small, because deep down I am a caveman who is thrilled by a sharp edge and fire.

The problem is that in todays society if you carry a weapon you are looked upon as a criminal, where as just 20 or 30 years ago when my dad was in school it was commonplace for people to carry a knife everywhere with them, heck my dad told me he used to bring his guns from hunting before school to school and cleaning them in the parking lot of his high school.

Like Maprik and Bladechick, I carry 2 knives, one small, in my Levi's watch pocket, and the other in my front right pocket. Today:
a small WH BO-5 Monarch in watch pocket, Small Sebenza in Large pocket. Fondled them both throughout the day, picked my teeth, and other manly things.
