EDC Challenge?

Work requirements trump game rules. And laws, etc should be taken in account.

What does everyone feel would be a good start date? I'll update my OP with rules as well, and start a new thread that the actual challenge will take place.

I know I'll be buying a new knife specifically for this, I've got two in mind, both cheap ones.
I want the start date to be at least a week or two away so anyone ordering a knife makes sure it gets here in time.

Why not start it on the first of March? This would give everyone ample time to prepare. I actually have a knife coming in right now that's outside my comfort zone. I think carrying it would be great for this challenge.

I think March sounds like a good start date.
How about a sign up thread as well? That should keep things under control.

Also a good idea. With a list, it'll be easy to keep track of participants and which knives they're using.

Right. The first post will have a full list of participants and the knives they use.
I'm thinking you have to use the knife for any knife task you do in the day, work permitting.

Sounds good to me. Thinking ahead a little, it would make things interesting if entrants were required to post why they choose their particular knife (after all, the point is to have us using knives outside our comfort zones). I also think that, work permitting, entrants should be limited to one knife for everything. I think this would make for an excellent learning experience.

Exactly. I know I will carry other knives(mainly cause the two I'm choosing between are rather cheap ones) but only using the one.

Nothing wrong with a backup in the possible event that a cheap knife might fail. I personally will keep my SAK on my belt as usual, since I mainly carry it for the other tools anyway (as much as I do like the blades on it). At any rate, my knife will be a midtech, so I don't expect any failures and don't feel the need to keep a Tri-Ad or something like that on me with it. Perhaps we should post our backups, too?

I think we should. I might just buy the 2 knives and keep one as the backup. I updated the OP with start date and I'll start a sign up thread later today.

Definitely. I'm either using a Chinese bolt(cheaper Lightning otf) or a kabar dozier.

I think the cutoff day for sign ups will be either the 28th or 29th.

Plenty of time for anyone who wants to participate.

I'll be using my new EK&T Companion. Still stupid excited (like a 12 year old girl at a Justin Bieber concert excited) for it to arrive!

I could argue that if I'm going to do this, it gives me sufficient reason to buy a knife that I like, aesthetically, but know I'd never carry because of the size. Of course, if I finish the month without deciding that I can deal with a smaller modern (which, realistically shouldn't be an issue because I also carry a traditional), then it was an expensive buy in to the game.

At this point, nobody is saying that a new knife must be bought to enter, thankfully. I think otherwise would whittle the number of entrants down to just a few.

Buying a new knife is totally up to you. I know a lot of people that probably have several knives that were gifts that they never carry.

I'll be setting up the sign up thread on my lunch break. Detailed rules and everything will be posted there

Whats the actual challenge, to use a knife we dont normally use? How would this be a contest or challenge?

To use a knife you would never use. Look at what you carry daily and think of what's the opposite.
Contest wise would probably just be whoever chooses the most outlandish knife, or uses it in a way in which it's definitely not meant for.
For example: I always carry more tactical style knives, large bladed Emerson, Spyderco, etc. so I'm choosing a small 3 inch folding hunter.
Use the knife for EVERYTHING. Can opener, cut steak, baton logs, whatever you do. I'll think of some side challenges as well, like extra points for processing game with a boxcutter.
But, there's no actual points or anything, it'll be based on popularity pretty much.

I may give this a try. I have been wanting to try to EDC a fixed blade for a while. Just picked up a real affordable vintage Imperial fixed blade that I was going to fix up. Might be just the right time for that. Making that my ONLY knife will really be tough, as I am not used to carrying fixed blades, so it would be a challenge to me.

That's the kind of stuff I'm hoping for.
