EDC cycling through your collection

Breaking in a knife and having the same one wear with you is more important to me than carrying something new everyday so the choice is easy - the same one again.

I am guilty of going down that rabbit hole of getting a bunch of new stuff just to try out but none of them ever seem to stick around. For what it’s worth I think it’s a cool idea in the original post and hope you can make some good opinions or at least rule out what you need/like and what you don’t.

Good thread! A challenge we all face with multiple choices of knives. lately leaving an EDC in my jeans and cargo shorts. When I switch pants a knife is already there. Most have pocket clips but like to carry my Buck folder in it's pouch once and a while. Great to have choices.

I usually will buy a knife with EDC usage in mind...
But I ALSO buy knives for specific purposes.
It might be for outdoor work...
It might be something that I find interesting...
or just pretty...
or simply because I find it interesting.

So I have a pile of knives that I carry on an every day basis; and some that stay closer to home.

But there's no doubt: I've fallen down the Rabbit Hole!

I have several that I carry most often, but I also have ongoing stuff done to my knives that fall out of the normal selection and those become the flavor of the week, so to speak.

I got these scales in yesterday, so carrying this today.

I have a 40 slot pelican case and a overflow case. For a bit I was picking the user of the day from the overflow case and using a random number generator app to pick from the 40. The app would not repeat numbers so I would perfectly rotate through my nice knives. I've gotten lazy about doing this reciently but might get back to it. I like the scheduled chaos.

This is a great thread Gary! Great pics too!!! Love hearing how others decide. I might try your dedicated rotation idea!!!

Currently I have waaaaaaaaaay too many folders, mainly because of this damn place, lol, but my edc rotation usually involves a lighter weight knife with a 3 inch blade or so. This removes a lot of the heavier “tanks” or “bomb proof” knives that are just too heavy for scrubs. It also removes a lot of the bigger folders that I’ll typically only carry when wearing pants/jeans that can handle the weight.

The older I get, the more I’m leaning towards smaller(ish) knives which impacts my edc decision as well. I’ve just found with my personal daily knife needs that a Small Sebenza 31 is just about perfect for me… hard to get this one out of my pocket. My beloved 940-1 partially serrated still gets significant pocket time as well, super lightweight, slim and extremely capable. I leaned into the titanium world pretty hard but almost all turn out to be too slippery in hand, maybe bc I live in the south with tons of humidity and I’m an Olympic caliber sweater, so this rules out a ton of my ti folders. However, the knurled QC Drift has been a real surprise in a great way because it checks a lot of my edc boxes.

For anyone interested the app I use is: Random UX

These days I carry fixed + folder, so the number of choices is large :)

I pretty much pick randomly, just make sure that they fit together, often the day before when taking a photo for the EDC thread. Sometimes, but rarely, I pick for a specific purpose, e.g., for a long car drive, yard work. Etc.

No need to over-engineer this, choice is good, time is short :)

Evening folks, in recent days I have both reduced as well as increased my collection. I am at odds with myself it seems and the latest knives are all pretty nice and I like them a lot, doesn’t seem like much of a problem, right?

There in lies the rub, it’s hard not to carry a lot of them, and don’t get me wrong as I have and do carry several but I want to keep that to a minimum as best I can.

So my ‘plan’ is to put them in order and take and carry just one for that day and the next morning put that one at the end of the selection and take the next one in line.

I’ll begin this experiment tomorrow and see how long it’ll last

What do you guys and gals do to select your EDC ?
Of course if you only have one, that’s easy but I hazard a guess most here have more than one

Oh, and my EDC choice will not include my two Swiss Army knives as I view those more as tools than knives

This will be tomorrow’s carry, very sleek CJRB

Some of our comrades here would probably never get to cycle through their entire inventory if they chose one per day! 😁

With some overlap, I have knives that are my favorites to carry, favorites to use, favorites to look at, favorites play with, favorites to know that I have them, etc. I don't really have any kind of plan. I just carry what I feel like carrying, and usually the same complement remains as my EDC for extended periods of time.

On a related note, if I think that one of the indications that I have succeeded in life will be when choosing which knives to carry is my biggest problem! I remain confident that I shall not achieve that place in life, but I continue to try.

I do my best to keep to the traditional number "7".. one for each day of the week,

7 EDC folders
7 traditional razors & brushes
7 carry firearms.
7 dress shirts/pants

If I buy a new one, one must leave....so it requires considerable thought before a new purchase. So far, this has been working.

I have "collector" knives in addition to my EDC knives and that is another topic, but the rule of 7 has existed for a few hundred years among gentlemen and I think it is still appropriate.
