EDC for cubicle life

I don't work in an office but in that kind of environment I would carry one of my smaller knives such as my CRK Mnandi, Spyderco Dragonfly, Boker Subcom or Fallkniven U2.

Case Sod Buster Jr in CV and Stainless, Schrade 340OT, Kershaw S60V Blur, and Kershaw Mini Cyclone have been my EDC's at work. I usually don't carry anything larger than the Blur.

Spyderco UKPK
Queen Sodbuster
Spyderco Lum chinese
Spydero Persistence
Spyderco Tenascious
Kershaw Barrage
Kershaw Packrat
Kershaw Composite Leek
Kershaw Blur

I carry a SAK for the office. I also have other knives, but I only show the SAK.

SAK huntsman and CRKT BULL plus a leatherman micro with wire strippers instead of pliers or scissors (not sure what model it is)

Use my leatherman skeletool and usually carry a knife. Have my bulldog (Boker) right now will leave it at home when I goto lunch and bring my kershaw.

Where I work I not only need to worry about sheeple, but legally can't carry anything with a blade larger than 2.5 inches. Still, I find a fair variety of my collection fits the bill.

  • Victorinox Ambassador
  • Case Sway Back Jack
  • Case Peanut
  • Spyderco Ladybug
  • Spyderco Dragonfly

I don't bring things like AO and flippers so as not to shock some sheeple when I pull out a "OMG! switchblade!!!"

I'm in a similar situation, and I edc a Kershaw Shallot combo blade w/o the pocket clip and an SAK Climber.

If I open the Shallot in front of people I usually open it slowly by hand instead of fully using the AO feature, as people tend to think it is a switchblade.

Welcome to 2010 - here's your helmet, kneepads and elbow pads.

When I'm in 'the office'... (I work for Stanford University remotely so I only travel out there a few times a year). Nobody bats an eye at a U2 or a Sodbuster or Mnundi. Anything larger or tacticool looking gets people all edgy. I carried a tenatious one trip and got a lot of sideways looks. I like carrying slippies when I'm away from home for work, can put a wicked edge on them, and if TSA or whomever walks off with one of my Case Sodbusters I don't get as heartbroken as I would if one of my more pricey knives were to disappear.

What you EDC, and what people know you EDC are two different things.

In an office environment, there are often fat, unhappy divorced women who don't want anyone else to be happy either. So they will squeal like a stuck pig if they see you carry something scary. Anything to make everyone as unhappy as they are.

Unless you have a boss with a spine who tells them to shut up, you have to hide your good stuff, or just carry things that divorced, fat, unhappy women don't regard as scary.

At the top of the list are small things - a small SAK, small light, etc. You can ask Freud why divorced, fat, unhappy women are scared of big things.

But its just better IMO not to allow anyone to know what you are carrying. Tell fatso what a valued co-worker she is, while you have your hand on the serrated monster folder in your pocket. She won't know the difference. JMO.

Speaking of political correctness, my bro in law is a chemical engineer at Dow Chemical. He could turn a couple of knobs at the chemical plant and blow up half of Michigan. But Dow won't let him carry anything with a blade on it. Must be lots of fat, divorced women working there.

I EDC a small Sebenza about 95% of the time. I've never had anyone raise any objections about it. That said, I work in a satellite office, and I have over a dozen machetes and 30 or so random knives scattered around here. :D As long as the work gets done, nobody cares.

What works for me at the office is, a Benchmade Benchmite.

Ritter mini-Griptilian M2, Falkniven U2, Spydrco UKPK, Spyderco Leafstorm, and a HUEY slippy.

The Ritter mini-Griptilian sees the most carry.

I live in "cubie-land" between major projects too, and I hardly ever get a startled look from a blade <3". A small Seb, Mnandi, BM 440, Caly 3, etc., etc. Slipjoints NEVER cause a stir and everyone thinks Swiss Army Knives are cute.
