EDC for cubicle life

I don't work in an office, but my fiancée does. I've known the people she works with for over five years now, and most already know I carry a knife on me. Occasionally, if someone needs something cut, I'll walk over and lend them a hand. Most of the knives in the eating room tend to be dishwasher dull.

Knives I've brought out in front of other people are an Opinel No.8, yeller-handled Sodbuster Jr. CV, Ka-Bar folding Dozier, Camillus Rough Cut Stockman, Schrade 33OT, Buck 303, and some miscellaneous Rough Rider knives. So far, not one flinch. Perhaps it's a matter of how one presents oneself to others.

I'll vote for slipjoints... anything from Case or Great Eastern or Queen with a handle scale and blade pattern that you like the looks of. Nice and classy and traditional are less likely to evoke negative reactions from coworkers who don't see the point (hur hur) to carrying a knife.

Hi Clarence Whirley -

I have a rotation that I carry - but I ALWAYS have my SAC Waiter in my left front pocket.

In addition, I rotate in the following:

SOG Flash I
Kershaw leek black/olive
Kershaw Zing grooved
Kershaw KO Centofante
Benchmade Mini Griptilian
S&W Cuttin' Horse
Kershaw Blur Composite
and a few traditional slip-joints

Most recently I have had my A.G. Russell Acies with me - I just cannot leave that one alone right now lol ....

For the cube-farm, nobody looks sideways at my SAK Waiter though, and it is the most versatile blade I carry, all the rest are just because I love knives and want them.

best regards -

I always have 2 blades on me, not including a tiny SAK on my keychain. Right now Im sporting the Spyderco Endura4 in my upper pocket (alternate is the CRKT M16-14), and a Plain black Kershaw Leek in my lower cargo pocket (sheeple/public use). Leatherman is also in my messenger bag. I also have 3 replaceable utility blade folders clipped to my pen holder on my desk, 2 home depot cheepies, and one of the Gerber utility folders.

What you EDC, and what people know you EDC are two different things.

In an office environment, there are often fat, unhappy divorced women who don't want anyone else to be happy either. So they will squeal like a stuck pig if they see you carry something scary. Anything to make everyone as unhappy as they are.

Unless you have a boss with a spine who tells them to shut up, you have to hide your good stuff, or just carry things that divorced, fat, unhappy women don't regard as scary.

At the top of the list are small things - a small SAK, small light, etc. You can ask Freud why divorced, fat, unhappy women are scared of big things.

But its just better IMO not to allow anyone to know what you are carrying. Tell fatso what a valued co-worker she is, while you have your hand on the serrated monster folder in your pocket. She won't know the difference. JMO.

Speaking of political correctness, my bro in law is a chemical engineer at Dow Chemical. He could turn a couple of knobs at the chemical plant and blow up half of Michigan. But Dow won't let him carry anything with a blade on it. Must be lots of fat, divorced women working there.

+1
And funny

I work in an office environment in IS (Information Systems) and EDC the items below. Everything I carry on me except for the sunglasses. The SAK Classic is my "sheeple knife".

I also carry in a Maxpedition Falcon II backpack with my laptop and "other" EDC items. It is a combination EDC/BOB with lots of stuff including fire starting items, FAK, flashlights, batteries, a couple larger knives, space blanket, paracord, etc.

I work in a big shop as a mechanic and my 943(plain edge uncoated blade) gets reactions from the service advisors(office people) and sometimes other techs???(i can have a sawzall and a die grinder and a torch but not a knife!!!) so I would say something smaller and not black. I did used to work at a lawfirm and used a kershaw chive most of the time. Its so small the assist doesn't even scare people. Now I would probably go with a mnandi or sm sebenza or a slipjoint if I were to go back to office environment.

I would carry a David Boye folder with plain dendritic Cobalt leaf blade and a yellow FRN handle. His website shows the options.

i work in an office with all women co-workers and they call on me whenever they need something cut or fixed. I carry a LM S2 or a SAK hiker or something along those lines.

Never had a problem with carrying any folder up to a Kershaw Vapor, but never carried a fixed blade...

hah, noodle speaks the truth. For some reason, people would rather brings others down just for being unhappy with themselves.. my brothers girlfriend is a fine example of this type of scum.

as far as work/office carry, I say if you use it alot in public, pack something small and friendly, maybe a "colored" mini griptilian or something that is not all tactical looking. But, if you have your own cubicle, space/office go crazy and carry whatever you're in the mood for.

The perfect EDC for cube life is the Spyderco Sage I. The wire clip is nearly invisible with dark slacks.

The blade is right a 3", not big enough to freak out the sheeple knifeaphobics who have read too many corporate "Weapons" policies. They see a 3" folder in your pocket and think you're going to stab someone, while ignoring the 8 inch butcher knife that's in the breakroom drawer every day. Idiots!

I EDC 3 cutting tools - A Leatherman K502x (one handed opening folding knife with some other tools), a Leatherman Wave and a Victorinox Cybertool (SAK).

In front of the sheeple I pull out the SAK and open the small blade - it can cut open a box just fine and I've yet to find anyone scared by it. I really can't see the value in upsetting workmates - unless you NEED a bigger knife for a certain task just use the SAK and avoid any hassles from others around you.

Around home or camping I'll use whatever I feel like and enjoy using a big & scary knife - but I wouldn't ever take my bigger knives into the workplace.

When I used my Sodbuster Jr. in view of a senior partner in my office, he asked if I couldn't affort a real knife? He was carrying a Benchmade Ruckus at the time. Of course, we're in Wyoming...

A back up pen should come in handy.

Buy a used Victorinox compact and take the scale off of it then place it on your favorite SAK. Ebay is a good place to look. That way you can add a pen to whatever SAK you like to use and you still get the tweezers and toothpick. I did it to my Tinker.
