EDC for cubicle life

unfortunately, i'm stuck in my office all day with sheeple all around. I've been EDC'ing my kershaw skyline, and nothing else really. I have a couple of things on my keychain (widgy bar, mini light).

what do you other office people EDC?

Doggone, my first thought upon seeing the thread topic was the Skyline.

Another good possibility is the Benchmade 530. It's flat as a pancake, light as a feather, with a blade that is much more substantial than the size of the knife would suggest. I'd also consider the BM Osborne 940. You can get it in pretty colors (mine is green scales with a purple titanium anodized spacer) but it has a very deceptively substantial blade. While it may appear to be a gentleman's knife it's also suitable for a rogue :D

BTW, I'm not sure what my opinion is worth, I've never been in a cubicle. Sounds like something from the movie Brazil.

I get to EDC whatever I want at the office, since I make the rules. :)

Today I carried a JD Smith and a Leatherman Juice.

Powernoodle certainly hits it on the head:thumbup:

But, it's not just miserable fat women looking to make people miserable, it's envious, repressed bores of both sexes and sizes:barf:

Don't flash your gear about too much anyway, keep it in reserve.

Most of the knives suggested have all been viable, I'd add a CASE Mini Copperlock. slim, Old School and yet has a decent amount of blade.

Thank god I have my own office, I thought all this talk of cubicles referred to toilet cubicles:D then I thought some super nosey surveillance addicted company had installed cameras in the cubicles just to see if you fondle an evil knife:eek:

I usually carry either my Umnumzaan or BM Rift (in CPM-M4 :)) in my dress slacks (pleats help hide them better).

A back up pen should come in handy.

Buy a used Victorinox compact and take the scale off of it then place it on your favorite SAK. Ebay is a good place to look. That way you can add a pen to whatever SAK you like to use and you still get the tweezers and toothpick. I did it to my Tinker.

Or you can go to sosakonline and get a set of brand new "plus" scales. Besides, I don't like the idea of using tweezers and (especially) toothpick from a used SAK :D

I'd love to see a picture or 2 from the people screeching about "SHEEPLE!!" and projecting their own insecurities on coworkers.

Put money on it - they probably look a bit "off." Frumpy/inappropriate clothing, sour demeanor, standoffish... combine that with what others perceive as a "weapon" and you can guess why some coworkers freak out.

Don't flash around your knives/gadgets around & don't look Looney Toons and you can carry anything you want to work.

I work in cube land surrounded by liberal sheeples and carry a leatherman supertool or charge Ti, plus a spyderco endura. Both do not draw comments and the leathermen are valued for their versatility by all. I do not advertise the endura, but it is handy when in the field and the 'toughs' approach.....

Also in Wyoming so edc usually isn't a problem but if I am in Schools it is a little different; in some schools(depending on class sometimes) I would be one of the few without a clip showing so a Skyline or similar; in others I usually have a couple of small slippies, one with tools.

Just remember - most people don't care, but in a group there is always at least one idiot. If you are an idiot and in a group then there is a good chance that there are at least 2 idiots.

Around a paranoid idiot non-knife person you should use some common sense and bear in mind that from their PoV:
Who caries a big scary knife? Psychos, murderers & serial killers!
Who caries SAKs? Boy scouts!

Use a SAK around these people, if they say "boy scout, eh?" just smile and say "always be prepared". This way they will never realise what a nut job you really are!

Victorinox makes a very traditional slipjoint that they call The Secretary. It's a two bladed pen knife modeled after the old office knives. Very slim and very light, at 3 1/4" closed it rides in a pair of slacks with no imprint and light as air. It's a "shadow" style knife with brushed aluminum handles, no liners and razor sharp blades. Don't let it fool you though, the knife is tough as nails and, with a little care, would last a lifetime. All for under $20.

I work in an office environment in IS (Information Systems) and EDC the items below. Everything I carry on me except for the sunglasses. The SAK Classic is my "sheeple knife".

I also carry in a Maxpedition Falcon II backpack with my laptop and "other" EDC items. It is a combination EDC/BOB with lots of stuff including fire starting items, FAK, flashlights, batteries, a couple larger knives, space blanket, paracord, etc.

Is the watch band woven out of paracord? Was it made for its potential emergency survival applications? Clever!

Well, it's not like your going to go out into the wild where you need a tougher knife. I think your skyline is good enough.

But I get it you want a "cooler knife" that'll keep you entertained in your cubicle. :) If you have the extra cash buy a small Sebenza.

I fix computers for a living so i can get away with a few extras. For my cube days i edc:
Spyderco Delica 4
Leatherman Skeletool CX
Leatherman Micra
Flashlight, curently a maratac AAA but i'ts getting upgraded to a 4Sevens Quark AA² Tactical, R5
Fisher Bullet
and on my keychain i have the small widgy bar and a swiss tool utili-key.

My boss is my best friends oldest brother so I can carry anything I want if I need to , that is if I'm polishing a chair instead of out servicing clients. Either way I carry what I need. Today's knives are Kershaw Zing and small CRKT S-2.

Carry anything I want to work? I don't think so. In my previous company I was one of the top managers, so people didn't challenge me about carrying a LM Wave on my belt. Still I got several nervous comments.

Now that I'm working in a much larger company in a lesser capacity, I got called out for doing exactly the same thing. The Wave is great, but it's not worth losing a job over, especially in this economy. I took it off my belt before HR or my boss got wise of it and decide to make an issue. Here I got a couple of ladies commenting "are you gonna kill someone" (albeit not seriously) on my Skyline and SAK Mechanic, despite my using them rarely and judiciously. I said nothing about the Skyline, and I said "It's a boy scout thing I haven't grown out of" about the SAK.

No, I don't look and act like a misfit. I'm an average sociable person, and actually a well regarded one. My boss openly told me that I'm on track to promotion, hardly your picture of a gruff loner.

Speaking of political correctness, my bro in law is a chemical engineer at Dow Chemical. He could turn a couple of knobs at the chemical plant and blow up half of Michigan. But Dow won't let him carry anything with a blade on it. Must be lots of fat, divorced women working there.
that is actually really scary.

when i worked out of a major newspaper office, i once got a nervous remark for whipping out my leatherman wave.

when i pointed out to the person (a male btw) that i'd been bringing this thing into the office every day for five years he shut up.

a week or so later we were out on a job together and he needed a blade.

couple days later, he started bringing a SAK into work.

imho: SAKs are truly awesome edc blades. even the most nervous of sheeple is pretty comfortable around a SAK.

Notice how I phrased it... you can EDC anything you want to work... that doesn't mean that other people need to see it or even get the hint of what you're carrying. You can be "prepared" and still blend-in with the other folks.

Use discretion: The only knife I take out in front of people at the office is a yellow-handled Case penknife or a smaller (1 or 2 layer) SAK. No one has said anything negative about me opening a package or envelope with either of those 2 choices. What if I used the Spyderco Military or Benchmade AFCK that I also routinely carry? I guarantee you someone would, at the very least, think it's strange and out-of-place (which it is, in a professional workplace). On the other end of the spectrum, I could end up in the boss's office getting a lecture. I'd like neither of those scenario's because they would portray me in an unfavorable light.

Listen - we all carry knives everyday of our lives. To us it's a normal, rational thing to do. We also have to understand that the majority of people we work alongside with each day don't carry knives on a regular basis, so when they see one, it's an unfamiliar sight. Some people don't care.... others will say sarcastic remarks.... and even others will go get the boss.

It's up to you how much attention you want lauded upon yourselves - some obviously want more than others.
