I'm a college student who needs a belt to support the weight of the items in his pockets... do you really want to know?

Uh... lessee here. My Air Force lanyard with a bike key, room key, house key, and assorted ugly keychains, plus a TOPS Prairie Fox (About the most useful little knife...), a tube of chapstick, my cell phone, an SAK, a large amount of pocket change, a pack of gum, a mini maglite, and a bunch of other crap that would be in my pockets if in theory I hadn't just changed pants.

The Soldier used to be made with the hollow pin. I believe it is no longer a requirement of the Swiss military.

Is it me, or does that sound kind of screwy? Now there's now way to fasten the knife onto anything. First there's no keyring, now there's no hollow pin. I don't get it. I'm confused.

I don't know what the reasoning was.
Perhaps Vincent can shed some light on this issue.

Thanks for the confidence Paul.....

But unfortunately I don't know for sure - just that 1992 (or perhaps part 1993?) was the last year where the Victorinox Soldier had the now much sought after hollow rivet.

However the Wenger "Standard Issue", or "Soldat" in Europe - does have the shackle/bail
and one can actually buy the hollow rivet version of the Wenger Soldat in Europe
(or just remove the bail/shackle)

I admit I have't read every single post closely (got sad looking at EDCs I can't afford :( ), but I don't seem to have encountered many (any?) poster who mentioned carrying a knife sharpener? I've always felt that carrying multiple knives is handy, but having a sharpener nearby is even better.

Like many of us, I carry more than one knife, and about a year ago, I started carrying a Viking whetstone purchased from Ragnar at ragweedforge.com. It's a piece of jasper stone cut into a rectangular slap about 1/4" thick, 1/2" wide, and 2 1/2" long (it seems the Vikings often wore whetstones made from particularly decorative-looking stones as jewelry).

The stone was cheap and comes with a leather lace for wear as a necklace. I replaced the leather with thin ("dummy cord") paracord. The stone sees a lot of use for quick edge touch-ups when I'm out and about. At home, after a 'real' knife sharpening with my Smith's jig set, I use the jasper stone instead of ceramic sticks to put a mirror polish on knife edges.

What's the 15' of paracord for? (sorry if this came up earlier, I haven't read this whole thread).

I honestly have no idea, I just have a bunch of it so I figured "hey, someday you may need some cordage, cut yourself a piece and carry it around"... :D

Makes sense to me! I've got some in the trunk of my car which came in handy last christmas when my niece insisted she needed a halter and reins for her giant stuffed horse she got from santa.

Looking at all the EDCs invariably gives me ideas I can implement in my own kit. Failing that, I put it on my Want List. This list gives me a bunch of things to look forward to.

My Spyderco "Stretch" and my Buck 705 go everywhere with me and get used 20-30 times a day. This combination deals with anything and everything I need a knife for.
