They're not really fond of collecting things.
But most of the time I can do what I want, I'm pretty independant.
I remember when I was about that age and still at home and in college. I bought myself a layman's book on quantum physics. Just to have something to say to him, I showed it to my dad, who was footing the bill for my college tuition.
He glanced up from his newspaper, said, "Gee, I wish I had the money to buy things like that for myself, but I'm too busy paying SOMEONE's tuition." Then he went back to reading.
Nevermind that he never bought anything for himself. Don't know why. He and my mom were born during The Depression. That must have messed them up some.
Anyway, I never showed him anything I bought for myself ever again.
I would show my mom the stuff I bought from time to time. She never cared what it was, but she always said, "Make sure your father doesn't see this." If it wasn't a suit to land yourself a job, then the purchase was unnecessary, in their minds. Sigh.
