Our S*** government is voting stupid laws banning the commerce of firearms.
Even before these laws, legally buy a gun was a very difficult tak here in Brazil: there were a lot of requirements, tests and burocracy. The authorities check your files for everything before they authorize you to buy a gun. The whole process takes more than 6 months, from the moment you pay for the gun in the store to the moment you can take it out with you (just to keep it home - to get a ccw it's another story). But that's what a honest citizen like you and me submit to do. The bad guys never do that. And what supplies the criminals is the black market - illegal guns that get to Brazil by our borders (yes, it's a very large country, with no border control) especially from Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia. Not to mention that our criminals like the good stuff (9mm, .45, AR-15 and so on) and for us, honest citizens, the most powerfull caliber allowed is the "mighty" .38 SPL.
So, blaming the guns for the crime is stupid, but they have the media in their hands, and this march against the commerce of legal guns is a way to show the people they (the polithics) are doing something against the crime, as if the legal guns (the guns legally bought by honest people) were the responsible for the high rate of crime in Brazil.
The criminals never bought firearmas in stores, neither register them within the authorities. And this laws applies only for the legal market. Unfortunately, bad guys don't respect the law.
So, what you might have seen or hear about Brazil is part of a plan to show the population that the guns are evil and the guns are responsible for the crime in Brazil.
Please, excuse my English. I could explain you better, give you more data and tell you a no-man's land this country is becoming, but this is not the right place for it.
From what you said: "everybody carries firearms !!"
I can just correct: everybody BUT THE HONEST PEOPLE carries firearms....
Sorry for the long post.
