UnknownVT, do you use your customized Scientist every day ? Can you put a new pic of your pocket knife, I asked it because I read that you have it and use 10 years ago and counting, so why it doesn´t look used ? I am just curious, I would like to have a knife 10 years with out of damage ....

That scan of my Scientist was done on March/16/2003.

I do carry my customized SAK everyday - since 2/93 (it's marked under the corkscrew) - except when I travel by air (not often now and that's a recent change)

The photo doesn't show it well - but that's a convex edge probably about a millimetre down from original and the tip is no longer as pointy - as I use crock sticks for touch up and it rounded the tip a bit before I realized......

The custom handles are ivory paper Micarta - so it will show very little wear (also I carry the knife in a SackUp pouch - however it has yellowed quite a bit from new (my other customized SAKs have yellowed somewhat but not as much as this one)

One can just see it on the photo - there is a slight ding/chip at the keyring end of the scale between the tweezers and ballpoint pen just right of the "stag" score mark - where I once dropped the knife onto the road - there is corresponding mark on the other side scale.

The main blade is otherwise undamaged because I only use it as a knife and I do not use it for hard cutting - in my normal environment I usually know when I'm going to use a knife for hard work and will carry a more appropriate knife/blade to use - eg: if I know I am going to cut carpet - I'll use a Stanley knife - and would not use my EDC (that would be stupid - unless it's an emergency ... and when has cutting carpet been an UNforseen emergency?).

Look carefully at the screwdriver - that shows quite a bit of scratching since that is what I use for prying - and obviously a screwdriver.

So I do carry and use my EDC everyday - but I am careful not to abuse it.

So everyone - how >>OLD<< is your EDC?
- some must be able to beat 10 years.
Show us a pic, please?

Haven't seen that many fixed blades as EDCs, even though I do see people around with small sheath knives strapped to their belts.

Are there legal/concealment implications of carrying around a small fixed blade?

Or is it simply a matter of a folder being more convenient?

from state to state, or even from city to city. Here in CA you can't carry a fixed blade concealed. If I lived out in the middle of the desert or up in the mountains, where the nearest neighbor was miles away I could carry a fair sized fixed blade on my hip without it being a big deal. But in crowded, liberal SoCal a big knife on your hip is going to stand out like a sore thumb. I've been looking at neck knives to put on a keychain along with a little flashlight, hiding in plain sight. In a fit of boredom at work, on a night shift, I cut down and started whittling a ruler. Now I have an actual size TOPS Prairie Fox in wood. It looks like it would go unnoticed and it feels pretty good in the hand. Might just have to get one. I like fixed blades, kinda makes the old "which lock is the strongest?" a moot point.

I tend to agree.

However I much prefer to carry my stuff wholly within my pocket(s) - as there are times where knives on belt sheaths and/or exposed clips are just not appropiate.

So I had been thinking of a small fixed blade in a nice friction/sprung kydex sheath that would fit in pants pocket.

Unfortunately even the really nice flat and elegant Bud Nealy MCS knives cannot do that comfortably.

The (now out of production) David Boye Basic 1, small and flat would probably fit the bill - but I would have to have a kydex sheath made to do this, as the sheath the Basic 1 came with would not fit in the pocket comfortably:

Perhaps some of the smaller "neck knives" would be pocketable?
I would think the total length in the sheath has to be less than 4".

Any suggestions, please?

I know that there are some that carry neck knives - have any of you considered carrying a knife on a necklace next to the skin - like dog-tags?

These models look suitable:

Victorinox Alox Classic:

or
Victorinox Broker in stainless steel

Are there any problems of wearing aluminum alloy next to the skin?

Thanks,

H&B equal end, 2 blades, full nickel silver bolsters, jigged bone handles, works as well as it did when it was made over 100 years ago.

I recently read something from Sal Glesser about the Ladybug being worn around climber's necks. With an SAK, I would use a sheath so I could seperate the knife from the necklace. I have one of Normark's sheaths for a Micra. The fit and workmanship on mine is perfect. http://www.mnsi.net/~nbtnoel/micro_rigs.htm

WoW! Many thanks Frank! what a great reference site on those sheaths.

The SAKs I was considering are those tiny (metal handled therefore slim) Classics - about 2 1/4" long by about 0.2" thin

So hung by the keyring "naked" are probably OK as a neck medallion.
But one would have to take the whole necklace off to use the knife - whereas the sheath will have the advantage to allow easier extraction, but with some added bulk and perhaps not quite as comfortable against skin.

Those sheaths are definitely a great way to carry a standard sized SAK as a neck carry outside of one's shirt though.

Good ideas UnknownVT !

I once tried hanging a SAK Midnight Manager on a mobile phone lanyard around my neck. It worked quite well as there is a quick release clip on the end of most mobile phone lanyards. The SAK was a little thick though. I found it very handy indeed and hardly noticed it was there. Now though, I tend to put the Manager or a minichamp in a small leather belt sheath as I don't like carrying things loose in my pockets - they get scratched and collect lint etc. I also attach a Photon II turquoise to it too.

An alox scaled classic would be a good idea too as they are slim but would the metal be attacked somehow by sweat - I live in bangkok ! Is it OK to wear aluminium next to the skin ?? I'm not sure either. Would be nice to find out though :)

Check out this thread too:-

Many thanks Tardis.

Yes, that's the question I had about the Alox Classic -
whether aluminum alloy could be worn near to the skin.

However there is still the Victorinox Broker version of the Classic - which is also very thin and all stainless steel - that should be OK?

I checked out the thread you referenced - I too have a SeberTool M4 - but found the tools to be crude - especially and unforgivably the knife blade. The lock was hard to operate. It was in the end a small folding plier with some thrown in tools in the handle, the edges were rough I had to carry it in a pouch in my pocket.
I didn't carry it for long before consigning it to the collection drawer and it hasn't seen daylight since.

OT: remember the 1984 hit "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head? Wasn't it the hit song from the Broadway show "Chess"?

Chisco Marsupial Wallet (three credit cards, drivers lic.,$20)
House key and a car key.
Benchmade AFCK (154cm)

It doesn't meet your size requirement of 4" total length, but I like the Benchmade 160 Tether Knife. It has a blade shape a bit like the Spyderco Navigator, is made from GIN-1, which is a steel that I like, and is flat and light. I carry mine in my rear pants pocket sometimes, or in the cargo pocket of my shorts.

That reminds me that AG Russell has been selling his Woodswalker small fixed blade for years with a flat rectangular thick leather sheath that's designed for the hip pocket carry - I see that he's updated it to offer a fashionable Kydex sheath too:

Smart that AG guy :)

I can't believe it myself - but I found my first real EDC knife - it's an old budget Victorinox Waiter/Bartender model.
fc0e2d32.jpg

This was my EDC from Jan/1982 until about Feb/1988 when I replaced it with a Victorinox Scientist.

As you can see the logo has worn off completely from the pocket carry - even the closeup of the logo area doesn't show much -
fc0e2d2e.jpg

The logo is not the usual scalloped shield - but a much simpler regular rounded triangular shield with Swiss cross - and being a budget model it was press-in printed silver as opposed to the regular full-priced models' embedded metal logos.

If you're dubious that this knife had been my EDC for over 6 years - when the handles still look pretty nice and the only evidence seems to be that the logo has worn off.......
Well, I found that one could polish the Cellidor handles with car polish and bring them back. Deeper scratches could be minimized by using metal polish or even the rougher car rubbing compound - then finish off with good car polish.

That is until I figured out I could carry the knife in a pouch -
this is my second Scientist circa Oct/1989 that I carried until Feb/1993 (I lost my first one Feb/1988-Aug/1989) - that's the well worn chamoise leather pouch I made for the knife. (I now just use a small SackUp pouch)

Condition is almost mint for the handles (thanks to the pouch) - but blade and screwdriver show wear.

Show us a pic of your first/oldest EDC please?

My first real EDC was a Victorinox (don't know exact model) but it is very silimar to a Case Hobo knife when I was little. Then I moved on to a Victorinox recruit, a Schrade lightweight lockback, then a Schrade Green handed derlin lockback, then a Kershaw Scallion, a Buck NXT-1 and now a Bencmade 556, I ordered a Mini-UDT today it will probably be carried for awhile. I have purshaced other knives during that time but haven't carried them.
