A used Freeman 451 from the Exchange came in this morning, and my jury (jury of one, I guess?) has been out on it for most the day.
@WValtakis, that Aquilonean Luna is there thanks to you!
It's kind of like if the Benchmade Adamas and Microtech Socom Elite had a baby.
It's got the aesthetics, steel, and wedge-like blade of the Adamas, but the weight, thickness, aluminum handles, and incredible action of the Socom -- and, unlike either, it's a button lock and a flipper. I wouldn't reach for it to do an "Adamas job," although it feels plenty tough; but it's also like 3 oz. lighter than the Adamas and is a dream to carry. The Socom has better steel, a much slicier grind, a longer blade in the same size handle, and is no slouch in the toughness department either.
This 451 also has a tiny bit of front-to-back blade play; I wasn't expecting that, particularly on the heels of the Protech Cambria (zero blade play despite its slenderness). But some thread-searching and reading here has led me to conclude it's uncommon in this model but not unheard of. It's got the same amount of cutting edge as, say, a BM Griptilian -- which isn't a surprise on paper, but feels more peculiar when holding them both.
But I can't argue with the ergos, the buttery button-lock action, its blend of features from two of my favorite knives, or the wonderfully implemented traction on the handles. It's a unique knife -- which is what drew me to it.
I can't remember the last time I was this conflicted about a new arrival.
