Looks like an old set up based in conductor insulation and splitting strands out. I have never seen the strands separated like that

I almost carried this GM3 the other day before opting for its drawer-mate MBK Sprocket. They're somewhat similar in size with the Sprocket a bit girthier (is that a word?) of both blade and grip with this Giant Mouse more slender in those regards and more like another drawer-mate, the ZT0450. This one affords a four-finger grip, my arthritis notwithstanding, and has a forward blade choil and jimping that are really too small for effective use. Still it's a useful EDC knife and takes up no room nor carries any significant weight in pocket. It's got great action, excellent steel, is reasonably thin behind the edge, and the nail nick affords discreet opening when used in a gentlemanly setting.

This'll make a good carry today as J and I make the rounds of a few local stores to wrap up our Christmas shopping. Maybe she'll see something she really likes for herself that'll help bail me out.

Happy Tuesday ! Not much change here. Am also working on what knives to carry on Xmas Eve and day. Only my wife and daughter get to use my CRK, so I carry a cpl of others to loan.
