EDC XIII Which knife or knives are you carrying today?

I was pretty amped yesterday morning, with plans to spend the afternoon cutting loose on a friend’s lease and getting in some much needed target practice. It’s a massive property with “range” areas set up for everything from handguns and rifles to sporting clays and compound bows. I seldom get the opportunity to go. In fact, it’s been almost two years since I put a round through any of my rifles…..so yeah, I was psyched.

But I had woken up feeling kinda crappy. Caffeine didn’t help, meds didn’t help….and by noon I was running a fever of 101 and knew something was off. I also knew there was no way it was Covid, ‘cause I don’t get Covid.

Figured it was most likely just a 24hr bug, but with some coaxing from my wife I did the responsible thing and broke out a rapid test. I mean, in the rare chance that it was Covid, which I knew it wasn’t, I couldn’t risk exposing any of the guys going.

We can all see where this is going, right?

Sure enough, I tested positive…..lol, all three times. Cancelled my plans, obviously….and I’ve now been sequestered to our bedroom. I’m not worried about it, but I am a little upset that my wife wouldn’t let me get a suite at the Ritz Carlton…..you know, so I wouldn’t be a nuisance around the house or put her at risk.

Anyway, I was planning on taking the McNees…..and if anyone asks the answer is a resounding “No! I didn’t choose the McNees because it matched my rifle!”

Well, ok…..maybe I did on some small, subconscious level. I just wish it were a better match, lol.

Hope it passes quickly and symptoms are mild.

Got a day off today, so I'm sitting on the couch watching old war movies and enjoying these three fine knives.

XM-24, Guardian 5.5, Nymble (and a Malkoff MDC 16650)

Every year or two I rethink my primary woods knife. For a couple years it was the excellent Ontario Blackbird SK-5; that one now lives strapped to my bug-out bag. I went super-minimal next, with a tiny Cold Steel fixie for one trip and a crappy Leatherman-alike for the next, and hated them both. Then for a season I used a splendid Ahti-made Puukko, which was super lightweight and easy to carry. Next, I swung the pendulum the other way and rolled with a Busse SHE2. Man, I loved that knife! But for my needs, it was just too large and heavy.

Gearing up for this year's camping and hiking, I first tried an ESEE-4 with contoured G10 scales. That knife is a staggeringly good deal, but juuuust close enough to being too small for my hand that I knew I wouldn't love it in actual use. So I decided to shell out the extra dough for the Bradford Guardian 5.5, which is exactly what I wished the ESEE-4 were (for me).

I called them to see if I could pick it up in person, since I'm practically next door; sadly, they don't do that. Then they called me just before shipping with a question about my address. Super nice folks to chat with, and this knife is outstanding. Great OEM sheath, too.

Nice trio. 👍
I like the movie “Beachhead” from 1954 has a bit of Kabar action and is set quite close to my part of the world.

Thank you!

I just beat Covid for the second time. I got the initial variant right at the beginning of the pandemic. Then about a month ago, I got the new variant. The experiences were a little different. The upfront fever on this one was worse but the trailing respiratory effect has been more mild. I'm up to maybe 90% my normal health level and no pneumonia this time.

If you want some key recommendations, take it easy! Get plenty of sleep. Make sure you have enough vitamin D in your system. If you aren't getting enough sun, supplement. There seems to be a link between vitamin D, general immune health, and Covid recovery in particular. You can read up on how much is right for your body weight.

Since I'm up and able to walk around, here is my Kizer T1 on a nice rock.
