Just laugh. Thing is, she’s right. She’s usually good about letting me indulge in my whims, and I wasn’t even serious when I showed her that pic. I want to retire next year, so I don’t need to be throwing that kind of money around at absolute non-essentials. I love looking at some of these beautiful pieces, but she asked what I’d actually do with it, and the fact is I’d just put it away somewhere and look at it once in awhile - no way I’d go walking around with a knife that expensive, much less use it and risk damaging or otherwise devaluing it. So I’m fine. I picked up a couple of really nice knives these last few weeks that I like looking at, fidgeting with, and using, and I figure there might be one or two more at some point, but they’ll most likely be of the modestly priced variety. I’m a very casual hobbyist - there’s a lot of nice stuff out there in the $100-$200 range that I’d be more than happy to have. I’ll leave the higher end stuff to the hard core users and collectors.

But damn those Olamics are some kinda nice. o_O

There is certainly a place for knives at most levels. I have a bunch in the $100-200 range and I really do enjoy them. You're getting into the curve of diminishing returns, but Sharp & Fiery Sharp & Fiery makes a good point. Even if to just have one very special knife, it can be worth it to step up. Something to know about the curve of diminishing returns is that it isn't smooth. There are some jumps and quirks along the way. One issue with a lot of folders in the $100-300 range is that you can get great machining but the heat treatments on the super steels might not realize their potential.

Olamic makes cool stuff and their customization service is fantastic. I had a Wayfarer and it was as well-made as it was beautiful. It wasn't perfect, but they offered to modify what I didn't like for free. Unfortunately, the overall shape just wasn't right for my hand so I sold it instead. I'd been waiting for the return of the Whippersnapper but I'm not sure how I feel about the new versions yet.

Of course, there is a level beyond which I won't go. I sometimes see cool stuff at Knife Center. I get excited but then I look at the price. Whether $800 or $2000, that's just too far up the curve for me.
