There will be no dogs today. She stayed at home with her wife. And my daughter and I visited the Staraya Ladoga fortress.

This is an hour and a half drive from St. Petersburg. The oldest fortress in the north of Russia. In 862 Novgorodians built a wooden fortress here. It was destroyed in 997 by Norwegian-Swedish Vikings led by Jarl Eirik Håkonsson. By 1116, the Novgorod authorities were building a stone fortress on this site.

Over the next two centuries, the Swedes besieged it more than ten times to no avail.

In the largest battle in 1164, the Swedes used 55 ships and over two thousand warriors.

This fortress on the Volkhov River was like a fish bone in the throat throughout Scandinavia.

It closed the only waterway to Russian territories and the eastern passage to the Black Sea.

For six hundred years, the fortress was twice destroyed almost to the ground. And twice she rose like a phoenix from the ashes.

The question was closed by Peter the Great in 1702. After several years of defeats in the Northern War, an assault on the Swedish border fortresses began from this fortress and from the Peter and Paul Fortress of St. Petersburg. Miraculously, the temple was preserved on the territory of the fortress.

Temple built in 1114 with frescoes from the end of the twelfth century.

I must say that the temples in the old Russian fortresses played the same role as the central (master's, donjons) towers in Europe.

It was the last line of defense. Therefore, they have such an architecture.
All in all, this was such a trip.

In addition to the fortress, we visited several more monasteries, but I already loaded you with more information than necessary.
As a bonus, I got smoked fish from the Volkhov River and beer from a local brewery. :)

Thank you for taking the time to make these wonderful uploads. I'm sure I'm not the only fan, even my wife enjoys your uploads and ask to see your post whenever they come up. She tells me stories of her visit to St. Petersburg often, but I would say we're equally fascinated by Russia's history and culture. Enjoy your vacation!!

Beautiful photography and history lesson. Everytime you post, I go down a "rabbit hole" and spend an hour on google looking up the history and places. My wife has been to Russia, I did not get a chance. Smoked fish and a beer sounds great.
