Good luck getting parts out of Cold Steel .
I have found them very sketchy even / especially on something as simple as a pocket clip and that was before covid and the big corporate change .
Go ahead Cold Steel prove me wrong ! Make a liar out of me ; I dare you , I triple dog dare you !
From the photo it looks like there was some bad steel right next to the break where the scale / texture is . Maybe when they rolled the spring material .
I bet one of the knife makers / repair people here could cut and bend you a spring fairly quick like a bunny .
Any body know where to buy basic spring bar material like this ?
Would be child's play to make one .
I take these springs out on nearly every Cold Steel that has a back lock and take some tension off the spring rate (along with some other tuning ).
I have tons and tons of Cold Steel Triad Locks and have never seen a flaw or had a problem bending them .
I wish you a speedy solution ! ! !
PS : There is (was) a Cold Steel forum here ; maybe give them some hell in there as well . I haven't been in there since I been back recently from years away .
Thanks. Yeah.... I was going to wait at least a week to be fair, but since you kindly provided the opportunity to vent .... I am right with you on sourcing the part myself.
Filled out the warranty request form Wednesday. No email yet. When I left a bad review on their site a few weeks ago, I got an unexpected email from support after a day or two. It's pretty clear what their warranty is worth and where GSM's priorities are.
*After* filling out their warranty, on Thursday I jumped on Jantz and bought some lock bar stock. That came today, so a package made it across the country quicker than GSM could email me back (and that's giving them the benefit of the doubt that they will eventually contact me). Good on Jantz, bad on GSM. It costs me $1.25 for enough to make 3-4 lock bars, so is it really worth GSM not to respond and ship a part and instead take the bad word of mouth? Short sighted. ... Rant over
Tried out both sizes of bar stock. They both work, but the thinner is closer in feel to the original and decided to go with that. The other has a nice stout feel and nice clunk sound on the open though, but playing with the bend I couldn't quite get it weak enough to be close enough to the factory feel as I would like. It takes just a minute with a dremel to cut and smooth the corners, then two linesman pliers put the bend in much easier than I expected.
Not the best pics but it was a 13+ hour workday ~
Both are the same thickness
The thicker is basically the same width as the original, while the other is not as wide (but as I said the feel of that one is closer due to both being thicker)
Width comparison with just the thinner one I went with
Both stock sizes, I am using the bottom .088" width one
The ever growing pile of junk parts surgically removed from GSM/Italy production Cold Steel... First opening I found the teflon washers were ripped with the inside edge was completely torn off one and the outside edge had some "hairs" on one, while the pb washers were pinched on the inside edge and scratched to crap
And the only pic most will care for, the dog tax
