EDC XIII Which knife or knives are you carrying today?

Today I'm carrying my TRM Neutron II and Olight Arkfeld

I stayed in the Russian drawer again for today's carry, but went with a knife from a third maker, picking out my Biryukov #9. I've only seen one other of these, some time after I got mine, randomly running across a "sold" listing at a French coutelier's website which listed it as a #9. I had previously not even had a model name for it, having bought it from a Spanish cutlery shop which didn't name the knife other than as a Biryukov.

I've got a few niggles with this one, though I do like and am not unhappy to have it. The detent is very light and the flipping action not snappy, though I'll remember when I first get it out to give it a sweeping lightswitch and it comes out just fine. It also has a tiny amount of detent lash in the closed position, which maybe related the biggest niggle ( a Biggle??) which is that the knife has easily the most half-assed attempt at a detent ball ramp I've ever encountered. It's as if someone--and I can't believe it was Andrey or anyone from his workshop--tried to create a ramp by drilling a depression just beyond the edge of the tang which has a slight bevel, which creates a secondary stop point at the beginning of closure. I've figured over time that this knife was not new, as advertised, or even BNIB, and likely had been messed with, perhaps at the dealership or elsewhere. The CF also showed more signs of handling than one would\expect in a new knife. The dealer was certainly neither polite nor honest, argumentatively insisting I pay VAT when that tax is not due on exports.

I almost didn't go through with the purchase those several years ago, but caved and paid anyway as I was very attracted to the knife. With all those bumps in the road you might think I'd be displeased with this one, but there's a lot to like about it, from its unusual CF, to the sturdy liners, its open back with rear butt-spacer and integral lanyard attachment, and on to its thin, pointy, fine-orange-peel polished FFG S90v blade. I've really never thought there was such a thing as the perfect knife anyway, and I have an odd sense of affection for this one whenever I carry like one would for an old friend with a difficult background and familiar flaws.

I'm twenty years the other side of having mine out and I'm fine, M. Find a good doc you trust, do your research, and choose the path you want to take. They say half of us get it anyway, but of course the other half are women. I'll keep a good thought for you, friend.
