EDCing a fixed blade; share your experiences!

I occasionally carry my Dozier Personal as an EDC. It works quite well for that. I just find that I seldom reach for the fixed blade when I need to use a knife and my interest in a fixed blade wanes other than in the outdoors (hunting, woods, hiking, fishing, photography excursions outdoors and so forth). I am about to order a sheath for the BK-24 and I have a small scalpe like knife that would work well for an EDC. I have even carried my Dozier Pro Guides knife on my belt and nobody seems to notice if I have a jacket of some kind on. But this is not a regular thing.

The Izula with a paracord belt loop on the sheath with the knife handle first in the front pocket is my favorite. Pull the knife out, remove blade from sheath , and the sheath just dangles off your belt , ready for re-insertion.
I don't think I've seen many people carry a fixed blade in the city , but folders are always common.

I dont have any fixed blades in an EDC size, have been looking at izulas and beckers. Main thing stopping me has been sheathing. I have a couple larger hunting knives, and re-sheathing to a belt sheath just seems annoying to me in an EDC use.

Your option sounds great for me! I will have to try this when i get a smaller fixed!

I have carried a FB some, not to much though. Never have tried a neck knife or anything smaller than about a four or five inche blade. It seems like anytime I go the fixed route, I end up with it hanging up on things like furniture, car doors, seatbelts, and...well you get the idea. I can see that something like a Bradford G3 would be less problematic than what I have carried in the past.

Local laws allow fixed blade carry (of any size) out in the open. Throw a jacket on to get protection from a light rain or wind and you are breaking the law if the knife gets covered up. Something like that little G3 tucked into my RFP with just the handle showing would also be breaking the law. The knife must be in the open. A folder, on the other hand, may be carried with full concealment. Once again, blade size is not an issue.

Even though I have the right to carry fixed, I have found it can raise a few eyebrows. Most of the time, people in my area just are not used to seeing a fixed blade on someone's hip. Around here, FB carry seems to only be approved by people when they feel it is the correct enviroment. Sooner or later, some sheeple is bound to over react and I am not crazy about the idea of having a chat with my local LEO explaining WHY I am wearing a knife on my belt.

I can carry a reasonable folder any place and not have to worry about people over reacting. For my EDC, a folder seems to work out better.

Generally, on weekends I carry a fixed blade on my belt and a folder clipped in my pocket. Lately, it's been one of these two. I wear them horizontally just left of my belt buckle. I wear my shirts untucked and surprisingly, neither print much at all. Having a small gut helps as well! Finally a benefit!!

I EDC these 4.

The two fixed are a ZT 0121 and BK11. The 0121 I have cord wrapped to my belt at the 11 o'clock.

The BK11 I have a custom leather sheath from http://www.coyleoutdoors.com/ (yes, they are a dealer here)

Its an awesome little rig. The straps are detachable(for pocket carry) and reversible for left or right carry on the belt scout or crossdraw. I carry mine scout along the back.

Its small enough that i don't feel it while sitting, and have never had any problems getting in or out of my car with it. The total BK11 package weighs in at 6.4oz.

The fixed blades for EDC have their advantages and disadvantages. I find pairing them with the folders, gets all my bases covered.

If you have a kydex sheath made with the proper retention and the eyelets set up properly, it can be used in more ways than one. Tek Lok, molle locks, or paracord can be used for multiple belt or pack carry options; horizontal, vertical, scout carry, etc. And paracord or ball chain for neck carry. If the kydex sheath retention is set properly and the sheath is formed correctly to the knife, the knife can be removed and replaced one handed and yet the knife will not fall out of the sheath, even when carried upside down in a neck sheath. Properly done, a kydex sheath on a small edc fixed blade would be all you need for any carry option you want.

@Renorattler I tried to email you, but your email isn't turned on. Shoot me an email please.

I carry a fixed blade under a button front shirt often. Love the izula but a little thick for food slicing. Another favorite was a Murray Carter, but losing it caused a most painful month. I've hiked with a Busse BMW strung upside down like a back pack.

Cool rig, how noticeable is it when your shirt is down?

Depends on what position you have it in. 11,12, 1 'oclock (left crossdraw), or scout(6) does not print on my untucked shirts. At 3 and 9,oclock you get a tiny print from the handle (unnoticeable if you didn't know it was there)

When it comes to knife use, I can't think of a chore where I'd rather use a folder over a fixed blade... except for EDC. On occasion, I'll carry a small fixed blade, just for a change of pace, but I'm mostly a folder guy. I find that folders are a lot faster for me to draw, use and tuck away without looking. YMMV :) When I do carry a fixed blade, I carry horizontal in my belt at 11 o'clock (just behind the first belt loop for right handed crossdraw--it's also easier to remove the sheath from the belt from this position, imo) or the knife and sheath is small enough to drop right into a pants pocket.

I EDC fixed blades in the 2.5-3" range on a regular basis. I keep 'em in kydex with mini tek-lock clips at 4-o'clock on my belt. Usually I will carry one only if I can easily conceal it with a fleece vest, sweater, or whatever. Depends on the context and dress code. I also EDC my birudashi, and usually all that's seen is the paracord keeper from my belt loop to a pocket.

Hfinn: what is the middle knife in your group of 3 ? The wood handle looks like it has been carved to shape with either a knife or a rasp. Very nice Custom.
thanks, kj

I wish I could edc a Battle Mistress, then again I don't open carry My AR-15 either lol. I usually carry a Izula or a custom that I bought on the knifemakers forum.

Where I'm at a fixed blade must be open carried size doesn't matter! So I carry my Busse's of all sizes and my BRKT Gunny and micro tusk and my Spartan knives Breed fighter. I get no hassal from LEO but I do get and over here not so nice comments or questions. If questioned I explain I'm a country boy and I can't wait to get away from them and their area only if they are rude though. If I over hear a comment I never respond cuz well why? The ironic thing is they pay little to no attention to my handgun?

Many thanks for this suggestion. I've just tried it out as an alternative to neck carry with my Fällkniven Kolt. It works just fine : no more bulk in the pocket than a folder and only one hand needed to draw. The loop can be kept short enough that the dangling sheath hardly is an issue. Really a great solution !

I recently replaced my modern folder that I carried at work with a Condor Mini Bush lore. I like having the small fixed blade for use on heavy cutting at work. Plus it seems that the condor is easier to maintain since dust and work grit don't get into anything. The 3 inch blade doesn't bother anyone at my work.
I am considering carrying a fixed blade when I am not at work as well. I just have not made up my mind which one yet.

I live in a very urban part of San Diego CA where it's legal to openly carry any size or type of fixed-blade, and for over ten years now I have been exercising my legal right to do so on a daily basis.

To get a better understanding of my carry experiences you need a little info about me- I've been riding motorcycles for the past 30 years now, and I don't mean occasionally or just on weekends, I mean everyday rain or shine. I was 41 years old the first time I drove a car. So technically I guess you could call me a "biker", and I guess you could say I look the part. I'm not what you would call "clean-cut", my riding gear shows decades of wear and use, and I don't own any boot polish. Basically, I look kind of rough, and that's fine with me.

The first FB that I started carrying openly on a daily basis was an Entrek Cobra. I carried this in a custom leather back-pocket sheath that I made. I only carried that knife for a little over a year before switching to a Wilson Tactical model 25 (pictured below). I carried (and still do), and used this knife at work and away from work. I carry my Wilson just about everywhere I go when out in public.

As far as interactions with the public, only a few regular people have said anything to me about my knife, and none of it was negative, just inquisitive. Polite and friendly.

As far as cops, a lot of cops have seen me carrying a fixed-blade. Only once did a cop say anything about it- I was outside a store getting ready to get on my bike and leave. The cop was already there sitting in his car when I arrived at the store, so it's not like anyone called him because of me. As I was getting ready to leave, the bottom of my jacket accidentally covered my knife (Entrek), thereby making it concealed. But all the cop did was give me a friendly heads-up about my knife being covered. He didn't ask my name, or ask for my ID, or detain me, or give me any kind of hard time. Just a few friendly words, I thanked him, adjusted my jacket, and I went on my way.

Several other cops have seen me carrying the Wilson. Many of them close enough to reach over and touch it. Many times I've passed cops in a 7-11 near my house. The cops and I just smiled at each other, exchanged "How's it going", and "Have a good day", and we went about our business. Not one ever stopped me or said a word about my knife.

On several occasions there have been cops stopped in the lane next to me at stop lights. My knife was clearly visible to them. But I've never been stopped, and not one of them has ever said a word to me about anything.

On one occasion, I walked into a fast food joint to get something to eat. There were 5 or 6 cops sitting at a table near the counter. It was cold and I was dressed in my leather jacket, leather pants, and I kept my helmet on (cap style) because I wasn't planning on being there for long, so between that, and the sound of my bike as I pulled up, there was no mistaking that I was a "biker". I walked right past the cops, went up to the counter and placed my order. Then I stood around waiting for my food. A few of the cops were close enough to reach over and touch my knife. But not one of them said a single word to me. It was like I wasn't even there. I got my food and left.

I read on this forum about people having negative experiences with the public over their knives, and I read about people having concerns regarding the cops, but I have no such concerns. No one has ever called the cops on me. No one has ever freaked-out on me. And if people are staring or making comments, I haven't noticed. And even if they are, frankly, I really couldn't care less.
