EDC'ing a knife?

Well as to legality that will go to municipal law.

So UBC will get you a different answer than McGill.

As to major that will go to the herd mentality of your classmates.

I carry a knife every day, everywhere it s not prohibited. I do carry it IWB clipped behind my belt, so it is not really noticeable.

OFC I am a responsible person and don't fool around with the knife in Public. I know the majority of laws about knives in Canada (such as it is legal to carry them for non-self defence reasons etc). Does anybody know if University would have special laws for it? Or more likely just socially less acceptable?

Check the university guide book or ask someone. Mine had a length restriction of like 3" I think on campus. There are no universal laws.

I'm in the heart of riverside a city in Southern California I'm sixteen and only comment I've ever had about my knife is "nice knife" coming from a police officer.

I don't usually answer these questions as I've answered it a hundred times in the last 17+ years on BFC...

I carry anywhere I legally can. I use a knife everyday in my life regardless of my job or who is around me. A knife is the most basic tool and if you don't find a need at least once a day for carryin' a knife you're either in jail or dead. I can't understand how you would never need a knife in your day to day chores, what kind of existence would you have to lead where a knife is a useless unneeded object?

Why do I need and carry a knife, what do I use it for?

I live in the weeds of PA in a rural area where a knife is a necessity in everyday life from cuttin' up vines and boxes, bags of fertilizer and pet food. I'm a mechanic/tradesman who uses a knife for everything from cuttin' and scrapin' gaskets to strippin' wires, trimmin' wood stakes, delimbing trees for cuttin' and splittin' firewood. I need a knife, an EDC for things throughout the day that need to be cut from mail, loose string and food to cuttin' the dog outta the briars when he gets hung up.

I don't have claws or teeth sharp enough to shred and cut the things throughout the day that need cuttin' so I carry a knife, a tool, not a weapon but a tool to make my life easier when it comes to makin' smaller things from bigger things or as a means of seperatin' matter, ie, fleshy materials.

For the folks that question my daily need for a knife, not just one but a diverse variety of knives designed to make specific jobs easier. Not one but many and as long I'm not coming after another person with my knife then it's no business of theirs what I carry or why.

I know all the newer members like asking these basic questions that have been asked a hundred times before but if you were a little more agressive in searchin' then you'd have pages of this same question posed by many other members.

I have a question, In what kind of utopian world do you see knives havin' no use? A world where your meat is already cut into bite size pieces, where nothin' needs to be opened, mail, boxes, packages, evrything is laid out before you and it's a perfectly safe world where there'll never be a need to cut anything ever again.

I've been to the UK and other countries and even places in the US where knives are severely frowned upon by the general public and local LEOs, I don't wanna be in a country where I can't be trusted to carry and use one of mankind's most basic tools, I'll live in a cave first.

No offense to the OP meant but I'm not about to give up my right to carry a knife and this'll be the last time I address this subject, from here on if I do respond to one of these threads I'll simply link it to one the many threads that already exist on this subject.

If I don't have a knife in my pocket, I feel naked. I always have at least one with me. There's also not a day that goes by that I don't use a knife for some task or another. If it were legal where I am, I'd carry an auto or an OTF.

Do you know where these municipal laws are posted? I just prefer not to say my University haha. I have searched without much luck on finding any rulings/laws. It is in Ontario.

Well, I've been carrying a knife since I was 12 years old. Now at 64, I carry a knife on a daily basis. Sometimes I carry a pocket EDC and also a fixed blade. Im a custom knife maker of fixed blade knives so I know the good, bad and the ugly. Me personally, I do not carry my custom folders on a regular basis. Lately I've been carrying my Ontario Rat 1, Sanrenmu and my Ganzo knives. Sanrenmu n the past 3 years has much better quality control and knives with an HRC ranging from 58 to 60. So why destroy a great custom folder.

Well.... i never leave home without a knife. I had forgotten my phones, keys but i had never ever forgotten to bring a knife. I conceal carry my knives, nobody knows i carry knives unless they are real close to me.

I also carry every day, everywhere it is not prohibited which is not very many places here. I've done so every day since I was a teenager although I don't recall if there was any prohibition in public schools back then. Ever since I discovered knives with pocket clips I've carried my knife clipped in my right front pocket.

Just search up your municipality; the city will normally have all the bylaws posted in PDF form. They may have links on the city's website too.

I found the by-laws. None seem to have anything to do with weapons, or knives of any kind. Didn't help they were split into individual bylaws.

When do you think it would be inappropriate to carry a knife?

Shower and swimming
For which Spyderco makes a 24/7 EDC especially for those activities ... the ARK.

Grew up in a rural setting. Now live in a suburban/urban environment working in a professional setting. So, I understand something of the cultural problem of how to carry a knife in a world where they are less common.

Couple of observations...

If you can live with a smaller blade, I've observed that either SAKs or pocket sized Leatherman tools like the Juice line like the S2 or Skeletool. SAKs are entirely non-threatening and a multi-tool will be seen as a tool, not a knife.

Another approach is to carry a smaller traditional slip joint like a stockman or Barlow pattern, or something like a small Lockback like a Buck 501. I've found those can be deployed for basic utility needs in pretty much any environment.

But if you want the size of a "real knife", the most people friendly knife I've found is the Opinel. I've found that the Opinel #8 or #9 can be deployed just about anywhere. They make no "click" or "clack" like a lock back or flipper and when deployed, look like a common kitchen sized paring knife. I've got big hands and prefer the #9 but could live with a #8 if forced too. I pair this with a Leatherman Micra to cover tool needs.
