I've picked up a lot of tips and information over the years from this forum and I'm trying to return the favor here. I purchased a KN100 edge sharpness tester from Edge On Up (www.edgeonup.com) some time ago and would like to report on my experiences with the instrument. I've thought quite a bit on just how to describe it best to you and this is what I came up with; It's like you have been stumbling around inside a dark room for years and then someone flips on the light switch. If you are interested in knowing as opposed to guessing and estimating how sharp your knife edge is then buy this instrument. It is much more than just a very accurate final sharpness indicator although if that is how you choose to use it then fine. I've been sharpening for decades and have been waiting for about that long for someone to come along with something like this. In conjunction with a good strop (maybe a steel as well but haven't tried it) this instrument will not only tell you if there is a wire edge (burr to some) present but tell you the magnitude of the wire edge as well. It will tell you how you are doing through each stage of your sharpening process and the whole thing is tied to a measurement scale that lets you know where your edge stands in relationship to the sharpness of a razor blade. While I think that anyone could benefit from this instrument I think that beginners and novices might be able to benefit most. When I first started sharpening my own knives I didn't have a clue what I was doing and this instrument would easily have kept me pointed in the right direction. If I do something wrong it tells me. If I do something right it tells me and if I'm spinning my wheels it tells me that too. I muddled my way through years ago but when I think about it now, it just makes me wonder how many young guys and newbies we've lost from our craft because they just got frustrated with not knowing where they were at. I don't pretend to be an expert with this device but I've had a fair amount of experience so if you have a question or comment I'd like to hear it and especially what you think about using an instrument like this as an aide to beginners.
