Ehm...? Wtf is this???

Thanx everybody for answering!
No problem folks! I have to admit that I was surprised by reaction at first. But now I understand.
I take it like Strider is first with "the" design of that Tanto? And CS copyed it and sell it like their own.
How come that prices for CS knives are low and Strider high? Are prices directly proportional to quality?
Now it's time to buy stuff from USA when 1$=6SEK.

And why "convicted felons"? I don't give a f**k about it. If quality is good I'll buy it. It's simple as that. But I don't like when manufacturers throwing shit at eachother. That's really low. Just do your thing and let knives sell themselves (by good quality). I.e Busse and Fallkniven...

PS. Like somebody said...I have to upgrade myself to a golden member or something...:o

Hay bro,

Some people care about where knives come from, I know I do !
Cold steel don't actually make knives they just market them by the way.

Strider has a huge following and I have owned a few in the past my self but I just dont like the guys who own Strider so I spend my money else where.

Take care,

Actually, the late Bob Lum introduced the Americanized tanto style, Cold Steel copied it and made many of them, large and small, folders and fixxed blades. Everyone else, including Strider, followed from that.

The knife in question looks like CS copied it from a Strider styled "original" but this is playing with words. So many knives, so few basic designs, and this design is as basic as they come.

I think more fuss comes from the fans of each than from the companies themselves, who just go on making and selling knives as best they can. You never hear Chris Reeve worrying about who makes a tiatanium-handled drop point folder, do you? He lets his knife's quality speak to those buyers who appreciate it.

Knife prices are a confluence of many factors: manufacturing quality, materials, development costs, target market, and reputation. In this case, Cold Steel is banking on the value of a tough knife to customers who just want one they can beat on, without worrying about the cachet.

The prices are based on many things. Materials, country of origin, and supply and demand. The Striders cost more because they can. Go to knifetests.com, and you can watch videos of the Strider and the CS being tested to their breaking point.

And why "convicted felons"?

Mick Strider was convicted of armed car jacking before starting Strider knives. I believe he took a test drive with a car salesman, and then stole the car at gunpoint.

Allright, now I know.
And CS is hoping to rise the rate of sale by turning Strider's potential customers against him by revealing the truth? And by doing that he's doing them a favour, he thinks?

I'm just confused by CS's low price. G.I. Tanto's price is $34,99. I eat for that much in one meal...I don't say that CS is either bad or good as brand, I don't know and I would like to know.
I.e. here in Sweden it's almost "forbidden" to name CS on forums. I asked why and the answer was that they were really good at the begining of 90's but now they are so low in quality that they are not worth mentioning. The handle will fall apart after few years, they lose sharpnes, they crack etc...
I just wanted clarity in this and that's why I started to dig about CS around the web and found that's written in my first post.

I don't mean to offend anyone I'm just beeing curious...

The CS is cheaper because it doesn't cost much to make. It's made in China, so labor is next to nothing. The steel is 1055 (I think), which is cheaper than the S30V in the Strider, while being a tougher steel (Before someone rants on me for that, I know S30V is superior for other attributes). You can find the GI Tanto for around $20 if you look around. The fact is, CS could sell the knife for more than they do and it would still be a great buy. They just choose not to. The Bushman is another CS knife in that price range that can perform side by side with more expensive knives. CS also sells a lot of knives that are way overpriced.

Strider Knives, on the other hand, are made in the US out of more expensive material. They also have a cult following and a lower production number, so they can demand a higher price because people will pay it.

As for toughness. KnifeTests rated the Strider and the CS the same. The CS is considerably thinner, and would probably have gottten a point above the Strider if it wasn't.

As far as the CS bashing (and Strider for that matter). It's mostly based on the owner, not the knives. Lynn Thompson is obnoxious and egotistical, but he's far from the worst in the industry. They have some sucky products, but they also have some very good ones. I wouldn't pay the prices they ask for their "custom" series knives, but their 1055 and SK-5 (and even Krupp stuff) are usually a good value.

Not enough to know this is very old news.

It may be old news, but those of us that don't read every old thread or all of Cold Steel's ad copy may not have seen it...I sure hadn't, and find it very interesting. I do understand the reference, by the way, and consider this very unprofessional ad copy from the company that in this case copied the design.

Ray :)

LMFAO!!!!!!!!:D:D:D:D

Thanks, HotrodKelly! Can't you just picture Mick and Duane all dressed up in camo, swinging on the "lock-test monkey bars," jumping off and giving Lynn Thompson a suplex as he's slicing up gloves filled with meat?! Or what about Anthony De Longis (better known as the bad guy with the boot-blade from the movie Roadhouse, and now a CS Sword and Throwing knife dude) and Ron Balicki (A Martial Artist, now better known as the CS fighting Sarong dude) vs. Mick and Duane in a tag-team, Brooklyn Smasher/Sjambok duel?! Man, that'd be some great stuff!!:D:thumbup:

It would have to be "black ops" re-enactments wouldnt it

Or did they fight in the civil war as well now

I think Strider Knives and Cold Steel should join forces! Couldn't you just imagine the next DVD in the "Proof" series if they did?! It'd be like the good ole days of the WWF all over again!:D:thumbup:
