:thumbdn: .........may be petty, but the only two times I have wanted to order something from him, he is unavailable......I do not begrudge someone personal time.....but when you post on your site that you will be out of office/shop till october 24th, you need to be there on the 24th. So, I left a message on the morning of the 25th, at which time the message was still saying back on the 24th, telling him that while I am sure he is a nice person, I would not seek to purchase anything through him in the future and that I did not think this was any way to run a business.......he left a message on my phone shortly therafter....after changing his voice mail to say back the 30th, telling me he didn't know who I was and didn't care who I was and that if his message said he would be out till the 30th (which it did not until after around 10:00 am central time the 25th), then he would not be in till the 30th. If you say you will do something.......you need to do it. It gives the appearance of a lack of reliability or believability to people like me who don't matter to you.

Are you kidding me? Is this a complaint? The man had to update his answering machine information and you just missed the change before you characterize his whole life by a week's difference in getting back to you ... wow.

I hope this is the worst thing that ever happens in your life.

please forgive me......what was I thinking???? For a minute, I thought it was a business, my mistake.......probably a little more perturbed by his reaction and the fact that he basically lied when he told me it said the 30th and not the 24th as If I had no basis for wondering why he was unavailable the 24th and into the 25th as I was simply going on the information he provided. I knew that some sackrider would jump on me for it, and I don't really care, I buy products from a number of sources online, etc, and can pick and choose who I buy from......I got my platen from the same person I got it from last time I wanted to order one from Mr. Ellis and he was unavailable, and I got my nelsonite from the manufacturer for exactly half the price. Point is, I need things when I need them from people who I can rely on to get them to me. In my experience, he is not the one.

Darren Ellis.......... One of the nicest guys you will ever do business with. Straight shooter and very knowledgeable.

Also, I might add, a very busy man..........

Frustrations sometime lead people to say (or post) things that they later regret. I hope this is the case.

frustrations regarding being told by this nice guy that he doesn't care who I am, or think I should have an opinion? Or did you mean frustrations that lead you to say these things to your future long term customers??? This would not have been posted here if it were not for what I feel to be an extremely unprofessional reaction to my statement. Even if I had left a very rude messaage on his machine, which I do not consider my calm and truthful opinion was, it is unprofessional to follow this up with your own rudeness and dismissiveness......good day, people.....

My calm and truthful opinion is that Darren is one of the most friendly knifemaker-supporting businessmen ive seen. My second calm and truthful opinion is that if a business is closed, it is closed. You cant say his business is bad when you havent done any business with him other than not being able to get in touch with him on two occasions.

You left a message on the guy's machine. He doesnt know you, youve never even been able to get in touch with him....if someone left me a rude message telling me how bad it was that I hadn't updated my "away" message, i probably wouldnt even have graced it with a return call. Consider yourself lucky.

Thats the beauty of being a consumer. You have the option to shop somewhere else if you dont like someone's business. You also have the option to complain about not liking their business. Everyone else also has the option to see your complaints and make their own judgements about you.

Did you ever consider that since they were gone for a week, maybe they were busy responding to all the inquiries they had inbetween? Surely you didnt expect to be first in line just because you called the day they were scheduled to get back?

Wow, no one here seems to understand the point, maybe you are too dense??? The message says, I will be out of the office/shop till the 24th.......on that day, you should be there. You do not listen to my message, change the dates, then call me and tell me I don't know what closed means as if I am some sort of moron, when you are the one who cannot apparently read a calender.
My message wasn't rude, it was factual. Period. And regarding your opnion as to a business being closed when it is closed, you are absolutely correct.....so when I call and get a message stating we will be out of the office from whatever date until october 24th..........doesn't that mean it is to be open the 24th??? Or am I just really stupid??? Because he was nice to you, I should think he's great when he was an ass to me??? If you make a mistake, and someone corrects it, you have NO RIGHT TO BE ANGRY WITH THEM, only yourself for making the error....I hold myself to the same standard and expect no less from others.

No, the thing is, apparently, they decided to extend their time away, or they originally got the date wrong and realized it maybe after my call......up till about 10am central on the 25th....the message still said they would be back the 24th.....after my call and darrens response, it was changed to the 31st, but he acted as if it always said the 31st, and I was just, I don't know, an idiot????

Mr. Mob,
You seem to have chosen your user name with remarkable clarity of insight and honesty. Hopefully time will allow you to reassess this incident and your reaction.

and as I read through these responses, I realize that the thing that most angers me is the fact that he treated me as if I were stupid, when it was his mistake that caused my initial response, which is to state that leaving a message stating you will be open for business on a certain day and then not actually being available is no way to run a business, in my opinion....I didn't yell or call names, I added that while I am sure he was a nice guy, I would look elsewhere as I had attempted numerous times with no luck....when he called me back telling me his website and answering said he was to be gone till the 31st and that means not there as if I were retarded and the message hadn't initially stated that he would be back the 24th, I went from simply not interested in dealing with him to genuinely angry....

I've done business with darren in the past and plan on continuing. Service was prompt, but relaxed. He acted like I'd been dealing with him for a long time and was a trusted customer on my very first order. Price and selection was also better than I could find elsewhere.
If that in itself isn't enough to make a guy want to give darren his business, he also spends quite a bit of his very limited free time on the forums offering advice to folks on a regular basis.
No comments about his answering machine or when he chooses to do business. Since this thread is about Darren, I figured I'd share my experience doing business with him.

Look at it this way, it was luck that in turnedout the way it did, at least you still have your money.

It was also good because it gives you an indication of whom to also avoid based on responses to this thread.

No, I don't think that anyone who has posted a response in this thread thinks that you have made anything up. Most of the responses, including mine, are simply expressing the opinion that you are over-reacting and that the degree of anger that you are exhibiting is out of proportion to the provocation as described.

The first time I bought something from him, I discovered when I got home I had the wrong stuff (some sort of other mortar instead of Satanite.) He mailed out a new bag of the right stuff at his cost. No questions asked.

Give him another chance.
