*** Before you wade through all this story of terrible customer service but ultimately a completed order, please bear in mind the dates of the posts. I did not find out that my order had shipped until the morning of the 7th of Feb. I was led to believe that the order had gone out the week of the 16th of Jan so all my requests for shipping confirmation and a tracking number were not to goad Ellis into shipping but out of concern that there were problems with the carrier! As I said, I was led to believe it was already shipped.(though clearly I was getting more and more skeptical)
This was also the main reason for my paypal dispute and claim. I was concerned about the parcel being lost and thought that filing a week before the last day (on day 37 since I ordered and paid) might goad them into providing a tracking number so I could try to track down the parcel myself.

Had I been told that the order had never been shipped even when finally provided with a tracking number, I may have been a little upset but I would never have had to resort to this thread.
Very poor communication was the catalyst to all this ugliness and even though Kathryn tries to sling the mud at me, I am of the opinion that the responsibility lies solely with her (and Darren for whatever part, if any, he plays in this) ***

I've ordered from Ellis Custom Knifeworks before and had no issues. I keep reading that they can be a little slow at times but it will all be good...

Is a month too long to be patient and still not get actual confirmation that my order has even shipped?

I ordered on the 31st of Dec and paid my money.
I asked a week later if they had received my order. Not looking for anything other than a confirmation email.
On the 10th and the 12th I got the same email telling of a minor family emergency and that they would look into my order and ship it if it hasn't already been shipped. I wrote back with sympathies and saying that the delay is fine and if they could send me a tracking number when the order is shipped I'd appreciate it.

On the 16th I received an invoice and an apology that it took so long to "get out".

Still no tracking number, still no parcel... I have asked for the tracking but no replies for over 2 weeks.

I spent $133 on shipping! I ordered from them because they are the one place that has everything I wanted.

Granted it's coming across the border to Canada but that has nothing to do with absolutely terrible communication.

I can wait and wait if I'm told I will have to and maybe a reason why but lack of communication is just a poor business practice.

I don't care that they are in school or busy or anything if they don't run their business properly, they should either warn customers or shut it down.

They had what I needed but this extra wait will end up putting me behind about a month.

I wish I had just broken up my order and got what I needed from other sources.

Good luck, I have had similar issues. They seem to be very nice people but they have many irons in the fire.

Thanks Mark. There's two of us up here in Canada that are waiting on orders with no communication at all.

I really wish they weren't the best stocked place to order from. This will be my last order from them unless I plan months ahead.

My order is slacking to and they have always treated me in a fast cutious way,but this time theres something up, they should have a contact number

When I ordered, there was a phone number on the website but sometime in this last month it has been taken down. I called in early Jan. and got a machine.
I guess they've been getting too many calls.

Thanks for your update. I am at 37 days so I am only giving it a few more before I file with paypal. Still nothing received and last week I got an email from Kathryn saying she would ask Darren about a tracking number. That was a week ago. That's about as useful as no email. I'm not pleased at all.

I saw their "family emergency" notice dated the 16th of Jan. on their site but that they were going to get caught up that week. I guess they have more important things to do.

I live in Knoxville, maybe I can make a house call with order receipts in hand! Nothing seems to get the ball rolling like a face to face meeting.

I just filed my dispute with Paypal. One week since last being told they would look into a tracking number and about the 3rd time I've asked for one and got no actual information, not even confirmation of shipping.

Don't buy from them. Apparently they could give a rats a$$ about their customers.

It's too bad because I've had good dealings with them in the past.

i got a shipping confirmation in my email just now! after i filed the claim, they have always done me right ,bad thing is i just ordered 10lbs of satanite from gun and knife yesterday!guess ill have plenty

Well, as they only seem to work on weekends and this weekend has passed without any more contact or information, I am fed up. I have filed a non-receipt claim with Paypal.

I really wish this hadn't gone this way but I can only take this for so long. Had I received a real email and not some vague and stalling platitudes about "looking into it" or "I'll ask Darren about a tracking number"...

Sad day.

Well, that seemed to get a rise.

I received an email full of excuses for their delay, including having stocking issues !? (I wish they had simply mentioned that) and a tracking number
..and the request to cancel my paypal claim. Ha.. when I get the parcel.

Well.. the tracking number doesn't work so no real change...

I am disappointed as the email was defensive and seeming to suggest that I am being unreasonable. (as they only work weekends as noted on their site)

-UPDATE-

So in finally giving up and filing the claim I finally got something happening.

This morning I received an email saying that the tracking number wasn't working because Fedex hadn't scanned it yet. I'm not sure if there's a tone but it read like it was snarky.

Anyway, so filing a claim finally got them to ship it. Only 38 days after the order date and after 3 weeks of misleading emails suggesting it had already been shipped.

Unbelievably bad customer service.

It's unbelievable that I would receive emails as if it was business as usual only to find that both your and my order were shipped today.

And then finally to get some real progress and get responses as if the paypal claims were an affront to their integrity.

To think these past couple weeks, I half expected to come home and find the parcel and it was just an issue of misplaced information. I was surprised to find that nothing had even been done until today.

I am not canceling my claim until I receive my parcel and verify the contents.
I suspect my troubles aren't over yet.

Stuart -- In post #13 above, you indicated that my e-mail to you was "defensive" and that I suggested you were unreasonable. I am posting the message I sent you below so that others can make their own judgment about whether I made any implication that you were being unreasonable.

Stuart,

None of your messages have fallen on deaf ears. We are a part time business and we both work full time in addition to Darren being a full time graduate student and Kathryn having additional "after-hours" professional commitments. Unfortunately, the start of 2011 has been a very busy and trying one and we have fallen behind on orders and had some issues getting items stocked by our own suppliers.

I have not been trying to stall -- I have simply been overwhelmed with work, the business, and family in the past month or more. We generally reserve Saturdays and Sundays for responding to e-mails (as noted on our website), which means that anytime I don't respond to messages Monday through Friday it is because I am not able to take the time away from my full-time job to respond to business e-mails.

All of that said, I understand that this has taken longer than it should have -- longer than it would have under normal circumstances on our end.

Here is your tracking number -- 527055015001636.

Please remove the hold that you have placed on your order on Paypal.

Sincerely,
Kathryn

Furthermore, in post #14 you said that my message about the tracking number read as "snarky." Here is the message I sent, again so that others can decide for themselves if the message was snarky -- it was certainly not intended to be. It was a brief message, but there was not much other information I was able to give to you at that moment.

The tracking number is not "working" yet because it has not been scanned in at the FedEx location yet -- I do not know when that will happen, but you should be able to "see" the package today.

Based on FedEx shipping information, I expect you to have your package within a week from today's date.

As for your decision to file a claim when you did, I received an e-mail from you at 12:02 am Sunday morning indicating that you were going to file a claim in the next couple of days. We were already planning to spend nearly all of Sunday at the shop getting caught up on as many orders as we could -- including your's. Then, at 12:42 pm I received another e-mail from you asking "don't you use computers?" By that time you had filed your dispute -- less than 12 hours since your message indicating you would do so in a couple of days. Then, by 10:00 that evening, you had escalated your dispute to a claim despite the fact that I had sent the first message above to you hours earlier.

Trust me, I get that you were/are frustrated. As my message to you above indicated, I am fully aware that we fell down on the job. However, I cannot respond to multiple e-mails and package orders at the same time.

The past 5-6 weeks have been very long for Darren and I and we have had a hard time keeping up with orders and with correspondence because of the personal emergency we had to deal with and because of the unusually large number of orders we received at the end of December and in January. We have shut the business down for two weeks to try to get caught up.

We are not perfect -- we try our best -- but, the implication that we would try to rip you off is not appreciated.

Sincerely,
Kathryn

p.s. Bill (bacustumknives) -- I'm not sure where you got the address info that you posted, but that was our previous home address. I would appreciate it if you would remove that information. We have not lived there in a long time and do not list our home address anywhere due to posts such as that from Bowdenknxvill above -- we have had a stalker we have had to deal with in the past. If anyone wants our mailing contact address, it is P.O. 27851, Knoxville, Tennessee 37927.

I guess the days of 'I am so sorry we mishandled your order, please accept our apologies etc. etc" are over.

Instead, its the excuse game....................................

I think I know darren, he used to teach an engineering fundamentals class @ UTK....I can guarantee that he is busy if he is still teaching(let alone taking classes too), and from what I know of him he always delivers
